Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160
“I’d like to go back down to 160 (pounds) because I feel I’m too small fighting some of these guys.
It’s not that I can’t fight at super middleweight, but I want to be the best I can, and I think that’s at middleweight. I only plan on boxing until I’m 30, so I have three years left to make one last run at aworld title. Let’s see how I do against guys my size. I’m not sure when I’ll be fighting at 160. I’m thinking maybe my next fight will be at 165. Benfield’s a big guy who fought as a cruiserweight.”
Since graduating from his role in The Contender I, Manfredo’s fought in Wales, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, but he enjoys fighting at home. “It’s the best,” Peter said about fighting in Rhode Island. “There’s no place like home. It’s all about being comfortable in your surroundings. At home, I have my family and friends, sleep in my own bed, eat food I like…..everything is comfortable.

Re: Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160
The best he can be is south of that again!
I have no idea why he ever decided to go to Super Middle.

Thats for sure! Man I couldn't believe it to be honest, but I do suppose he made more money than many fighters so it wasn't completely nosensical.
A logical move not a noble move.

Peter would actually be at his best at 154 too. He would gain a good degree of speed and would have a big advantage in terms of power.
Who knows though at 160, he may still get some fights with guys like Tito and Duddy.

If he's not targetting Duddy for a fight at the garden he'd be an idiot... 2 money makes... Duddy fans want to see him batter Peter and Manfredo fans want to see peter box his ears off!

Re: Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160

Peter has been handed a ticket which means he can easily make good money fighting anyone with a reasonable name, double that with Dudy's name and I think they'd sell it out as a main event.
I agree if he's not looking for it he's silly.
But Duddy may need him just as much as Manfredo might want him after Duddy fails in a title bid.

Re: Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160
Duddy definately needs this fight more. I can't image the two sides haven't talked about it. It might not happen this year, but it will happen. I think Manfredo moving down is the first step towards making this happen.

I don't know that Duddy needs it more, If he fights anybody over hear he'll sell out a venue and get a hundred thousand viewers on TV. Thats a lot of money.

Actually Mike is called Frank Warren offering you alot of money , to fight an established world champion , as a no risk fight and lets cheat the paying public for a change.
Once again we are in your debt Mr Warren.( and thankyou WBO also )another test for your champions.
Manfredo has limited power and ability so he should fight at the lowest weight he can .

So Peter is tipping his hand right there. Take him out of his comfort zone and you have a definite edge over him. And why retire at 30? He already has the face of a 50 year old with all the shots he's taken.

Re: Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160
Okay Pride, I know you are a fan, and I'm not trying to bash Manfredo, (okay, maybe just a little ;)) or pick a fight, but I don't see him making any waves at 160 either.
Here's why:
1) His whole reason for moving up to 168 was because he said that he couldn't make 160 anymore. During, and after The Contender, he bitched and moaned about how he was killing himself to make weight at 160. So how is it going to be different now? If making 160 is really that hard on him and his body, isn't he going to be draining himself of some of his power in the process of making that weight?
2) I really don't think that Peter has the mindset of a champion. Honestly, I don't think that boxing really was his passion in the first place. The impression that I, and many others seem to have, is that he was pretty much forced into the sport by his father, and stuck with it, so that he would not disappoint his father. If he really was passionate about boxing, and thought that he would be a world champion, why would go to school to become an electrician? Not that there is anything wrong with that, but if you really felt that you would be a champion, then there should be no need to have a career to fall back on.
3) Peter chokes at his big fights.
To be honest, I think Peter knows that his 15 minutes is about up, and I get the feeling that he will first fight a couple bums at 160 to get used to the weight again, and then he will call out Sergio for another rematch. He and TOC knows, that both his, and Sergio's star status has fallen dramatically, and maybe the only way to get it back, is to try for another rematch in hopes of getting that Contender fan base interest back again.
I bet that if Sergio does not make a good showing in his upcoming fight against Vernon, then shortly after that fight, the talks of a Mora/Manfredo rematch will start coming up.
This is just my opinion, but hey, if Manfredo proves me wrong, and becomes a world champion, then I'll give him the props that he deserves, I'm not above that.
But I don't think that I will have to. ;D

Manfredo's body should easily allow him to make 154, he's not a big guy.

I don't take it as bashing but most is the truth...;) He will probably only be a regional fighter from here on in. I do think 154 would be a better fit and I think the weight thing is bull.. I think he's just being lazy.
I think that the only part I disagree with is world champion or not... C'mon... If he thought he was going to be champion why would he go to school to be an electrician? C'mon... So what, what your saying is he should have tried and tried and then at age 36 if that didn't work he and his family should starve for a few years while trying to pic up a trade then? Look at Juan Diaz... I'm not comparing the two as fighters but why would he continue to go to school... Hasn't he made it? That statement is rediculous. As far as he being forced in by his father... He started boxing to follow his father and uncle... His father never actully wanted him to fight...(from his fathers mouth to my ears...)
I agree with the Mora statement... I have thought about the same thing:-\
Yeah, he does choke in big fights and it sucks... But it's true... Like I said... nomatter the weight he will be a good regional fighter for new england... Thats about it...
Diane, I really like your posts. You have a lot of knowlege of the game.

I agree, Peter is not a big guy, and logically, he should go down in weight.
But, Peter is the one that has said on MANY occassions, that he had trouble making the weight. So if he was telling the truth back then, how is it going to be any different now?
I'm just going by what Peter has said himself.

No no no... You didn't come across that way:)... I tried to rep you after I posted but it wouldn't allow it...
I agree with most of what you say...
He will have alot of trouble making waves in any div if he continues on the road he's on now...:-\

Sergio Mora called him out right after their second fight and Peter peed on himself.

Re: Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160
Regardless of what weight he fights at, I don't seem him being a world champion. He's just a flat out ordinary fighter and thats being generous. These "contender Guys" are just like American Idol contestants. Made for TV prospects hyped up to sound better than they really are.

Yeah but remember that Manfredo WAS an actually legit prospect back in 04... Not overhyped... I will allow that tag now, though;D

You seem to be a Manfredo fan, but also a realist, so I guess you would probably be the best person to pose this question to. What happened to Manfredo from legit prospect till now?

Fame... That made him a name... Therefore he was thrown into he ring with guys he never should have been in the ring with(ie Calzaghe, Lacy he could have beaten... boring ass fight) on the coat tails of money and a 2nd place on a TV show... Calzaghe got exposure and Lacy had a comeback fight...
Money was the root of it... He did pretty well on the contender. But, really, who cares... Boxing is a game of "what have you done for me lately"
Lately he lost an extremely inactive fight to a fighter that seems to still be injured wether it's ego, esteem or legit injury I don't know... Nor do I care.
Peter looks as if he may never see the world stage again cuz if he gets there who's gonna want to see him...? Me? That'd be a pretty shitty showing.
He needs to find a weight(154)... stay there and try to do some damage to fringe contenders... He may have a shot at a belt at that point but that is VERY optimistic thinking;D
-
Re: Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160
I never really felt Manfred belonged at 168 in the first place
-
Re: Hey, I called it... Manfredo to move to 160
That's good that Manfredo is moving to 160. But it don't change the fact that he still a bum
