Any other NHL fans on the site?
I figured if there were a few of us we could start a thread where we could get together and talk about the upcoming playoffs.
I know there are at least 3 of us as Lyle is a fan (Hurricanes, right?) and Sal is a Canucks fan like myself.
Personally I'd be surprised if the cup didn't go to whichever team makes it out of the meat-grinder that is the West, provided the Western teams don't maul eachother too badly.
I don't think my Canucks have much of a chance of getting past the 2nd round; unless Roberto Luongo goes lights-out like last years play-offs AND the 'Nuck can find some secondary scoring (which has become less likely with Raymond going down from that knee-on-knee cheapshot last night), hell at this point I'd settle for some primary scoring as the Sedin's have disappeared.
Anyways, this thread will probably fail miserably because the NHL is about as popular as dog-shows these days, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I lurk around some NHL boards, but I don't post in them due to the general stupidity of much of the content (HFBoards isn't too bad though).
So anyone who's a NHL/Hockey fan, feel free to post about it in here.

I know, at least I didn't put 'eh' anywhere in the post, eh? The Brits get to post about Soccer/Football, a far inferior game in my opinion (just trying to be inflamatory, don't take that seriously), so I get to post about hockey.
If there's enough, or any, interest I could post the updated standing every day until the playoffs as there are some tight races.

I thought you once mentioned in a thread that you played hockey RP33, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Im a HUGE hockey fan.
Canucks all the way to the cup, think nothing else.
Once we get rid of Naslund or resign him for like 3mil and give the Sedins 3mil each then we are laughin. We will have all kinds of money to spend on some decent players.
oh yeah and they should make Linden captain as of right now because no team has ever won the cup without a Canadian captain.

yeah our season just ended sunday, we lost first round of the playoffs in a tight game..
I used to watch NHL a LOT in middle/high school, but haven't in a while.. If there are some tight series' then i'd get into it prob..
I think it's funny how some players who were in NHL '93 for Sega Genesis are still playing today.. longest fucking careers.

While I am glad to see another Canuck fan on here, I have to disagree with some of your post. Naslund for 3M would be a bargain, looking at the money the UFA's got last off season, I wouldn't be surprised if someone through 5+M at Nazzy, though I doubt he wants to play anywhere other than Van, he'd probably just retire if the Canucks don't want him. The Sedin's are already a bargain at 3.75M each per season, there is no way they go below 4 - 5M a piece on their next contract. I'm not saying I would pay them that, but that is what they will want, and honestly it's what they deserve. Look around the league and the type of money that point-per-game players are getting is astounding. Because they're linked to one another and come as a packaged deal, I can see the Sedins taking a bit of a discount, for arguments sake lets just say 4.5M each on a long-term deal, and considering their stats that would be a good deal. However, I think what the Sedin's make in the future hinges on these playoffs though. If they show that they cannot come through in the post-season, as they have demonstrated in the past, then I expect their salaries to drop accordingly. I'm not completely sold on them myself, and if I was Dave Nonis I would take a long look at the rumoured Ollie Jokinen - Sedins deal that was supposedly offered at the deadline. Of course, Florida would have to sweeten the deal considerably and they might be hesitant to deal with Van considering how badly the Canucks robbed them in the Luongo deal.
The problem is that all the decent UFA's are being gobbled up and signed to outrageous salaries on long-term contracts (look at Briere for example) so teams are going to have to draft well if they want to succeed in the so called "new NHL" (a big fuck you to Gary Bettman as well). In the Canucks case, they're going to need guys like Raymond and Grabner to establish themselves are bonified NHL players and scoring threats or the Canucks will go nowhere because they have no offense. As much as I want Nonis to sign someone like Hossa this offseason, in no way to I want to see the Canucks pay the guy 7+M on a long-term deal.
Right now I'd be happy to see the Nucks make the 2nd rounds, but of course I'm going to be hoping too see the cup in Vancity.

While I don't think Naslund is an appropriate Captain anymore, it has nothing to do with his nationality/ethnicity. How many cups would Detroit have won without Lidstrom on the blueline? Ask anyone on the team and they will tell you that he was one of their leaders. That's why he got the Captaincy after Yzerman retired (Yzerman is my favorite hockey player ever).
People used to say things like there will never be a black heavy-weight champ or that you couldn't win the super-bowl with a black QB. Which is racist, xenophobic, and complete bullshit IMO.
Sorry for having to disagree with you, I'm glad to see another Canuck fan here and hopefully we can have some good discussions.
Edit: Teams have won the cup with an American as the Captain. Derrian Hatcher led the Stars when they won the cup.

NHL '93, or was it '94, was the best game. Ever.
I'm just hoping the Canucks don't play the Stars again this year, that series was PAINFUL.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Hatcher is Canadian i believe????????????
The Sedins will take 3.5 million each or they wont be in the NHL.
they will leave or else we will trade them to diff teams if they dont take the 3.5 million.

Hatcher is from Michigan.
I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but why would the Sedin's take a pay-cut when their play and point totals indicate they deserve a raise. Look at what other players with similar point totals/responsibilities are making. I'm sure many GM's would be willing to part with well over 3.5M for point-per-game players.

Never followed it on telly as they don't have it over here but I used to love playing the EA games a few years back.
I was always the Philadelphia Flyers and Eric Lindros was my main man and goal scoring machine

Eric Lindros falls under the "What could have been" catagory. Concussions basically destroyed his career (look up the Scott Stevens hit on youtube... brutal). He could have been an all time great.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
your right about hatcher, cant wait to go into work this morning and rub it in this guys face that told me that Canadian captain and the cup thing.
I like the sedins I just think if we can get them for cheap then we should try to. Naslund and the Sedins have said they only want to play in Vancouver which leads me to believe if they got traded they would instead just go play in Sweden. we could probably give up salo and miller for someone pretty good.

I know Nazzy has said he doesn't want to play anywhere else, but I've never seen the Sedin's saying that. If the Canucks are going to make a trade, they'll have to deal some of their defense, but Miller is only signed to a 1 yr contract, ending this spring, so he can't be traded. Salo also took a huge pay-cut to stay in Van, and he has a NTC so he won't be traded. The only D they can really trade, because of the fact that Nonis gives out NTCs like my high-school girlfriend gave out blowjobs, are Bieksa (who is so overrated its not even comical anymore, he'll be the highest paid Canucks defenseman starting next year because Nonis signed him to a huge deal after ONE good season ), Kraijeck (who would give us anything good for him?), or one of the young guys like Edler, Bourdon, or McKiver (sp) - who I do not want to see moved. The Canucks are in a tough spot, and if they waste the tenure of Roberto Luongo without adding any offense this off season, I will become very unhappy with the team.
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
yeah I dont wanna see any of our younger D guys go, I like all of them.
if they resign naslund they have to find him someone good to play with so we can have him the newguy and morrison as our 1st and sedin sedin pyatt as our 2nd. kesler burrows and raymond would be good also

Unfortunately, if the Canucks want to get some offensive, aside from free-agency, there's no other way but to trade some of the young D. I'd rather see Bieksa go than any of the others, he reminds me of Jovo with less offensive upside and more boneheaded defensive blunders. I think they'll try to get someone via free agency, but I doubt it'll be a Hossa-type player, at most it'll probably be someone like Michael Ryder or Brian Rolston. Hopefully then they could have a 1a and 1b type of system for the scoring lines. Maybe something like Sedin-Sedin-Ryder and Raymond - Morrison - Nazzy or something. I love the checking line with Burrows - Kessler - ??? maybe Hason or someone. The problem is that there is no scoring help coming from the farm. Grabner needs more time in the AHL and I don't think Jaffray will get another shot, but I could be wrong.

Oiler are on a roll, have won 10 of their last 12. I'd wager it's going to be another of Gary Bettman's beloved 3 point games, which is a fucking joke - what other sport has games that are worth different amounts of points?
I'm a fan, so I'm going to say 3-2 'Nucks in OT, but the logical side of me thinks the Oilers are going to steam-roll the Canucks. They'll be within 3 points of a play-off spot if they win tonight I think.

I am a fan of the Hurricanes....I used to play ice hockey as well, you yankees and canucks might find it strange that a Southern boy suchas myself played ice hockey AND lacrosse ......I only did so to teach yall a lesson, don't fuck with the South because we play everything like Football....I racked up more penalty minutes in ice hockey than I could count....same in lacrosse.....pussy ass ref's kept sending me to the box because when I hit someone it "sounded loud"

I'm sure you know this, but some of the southern NHL teams have great support. The 'Canes and Lightning in particular I think have pretty good support thanks to them winning the cup.
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Well Greensboro always supported their ECHL team really well and they did very well in supporting NHL exhibition games before the 'Canes came along. Then we got an AHL team and the prices soared and some people lost intrest as it was no longer "Wrasslin on Ice". When the 'Canes came along it was no longer $5 a game and it took some getting used to, and by the time everyone got used to it the 'Canes were in the RBC Center in Raleigh......closer to a huge base of Yankees and Halfbacks(people who move from NY to Florida and then halfway back because of the heat)

Even I feel sorry for Leafs fans these days. That'll change as soon as you guys get a good team though. Were you pissed that Sundin wouldn't wave his NTC? I remember hearing that lots of Leaf fans were upset about it.

no, didn't bother me. the people it bothered are just plain stupid and have nothing better to concern themselves with.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
I'd like to bump this thread with the purpose of giving the Vancouver Canucks ownership a big FUCK YOU! :fyou:for firing the first decent GM we have had in the last decade.
The guy takes a team with no prospects, no future, and a bunch of shitty, overpaid vetrans; somehow manages to trade a useless piece of shit (Bertuzzi) for the 2nd best goalie in the world; somehow manages to restock the farm team with decent prospects; doesn't trade away draft pics like candy trying to make the playoffs only to lose in the 1st round like usual; takes the team to its best record EVER; I could go on and on, but you get the idea...
The guy is 2 years into a 4 year plan and they shit-can him, with no replacement lined up, right before he finalized a contract with the most sought after player not in the NHL for fucksake.
I'm this fucking close to becoming a Flames fan out of spite, at least they're a respectable organization.
Being a Canucks fan sometimes feels like prison-sex. Fuck.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
I'm a big Sharks fan, unbelievable game the other day an absolute heart breaker. They've been having trouble with the double teams on Thornton and because of that that whole line has been shut down but right now Marleau, and Clowe are carrying the team, hopefully that changes a bit in game 4.

I'm by no means a fan of the Sharks, considering they kick the shit out of the Canucks on a regular basis, but I cannot belive that Thornton is a playoff no-show again. At least Marleau is answering questions about his ability to perform in the post season.
I've been hoping the Sharks would choke because I hoped it would give the Canucks a shot at trading for Marleau, but with his play it looks like that was just a pipe-dream.
As long as the Sharks can match the physical play of the Flames they should be able to bounce back and take the series. They looked almost scared of the Flames last game, especially after Marleau got smoked twice. I still think the Sharks will win the series, they've been my pick to win the cup since Oct.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Just out of curiosity what do you guys (CFH) think of Jannik Hansen? He is about as good as it gets coming from Denmark, but is he good enough for a future at the Canucks?
Based on his stats he has been doing very fine the last few months for Manitoba (who btw will hopefully be knocked out of the AHL playoff soon, so Hansen can join the Danish team for the WC in May), and I was a bit surprised he didnt get a call-up. Especially since he has been called up before, when he was playing worse.
Also, I went to my only 2nd ever live ice hockey game the other week -the 6th (out of 7) semifinal in the Finnish SM-Liiga - and one of the 'stars' was Tommi Santala. If I remember correctly, he was playing in Vancouver as well? He wasnt good enough, I suppose?

Santala was terrible. Just awful. Hansen on the other hand was great last year in the play-offs and seems to be improving offensively this year. Many people wanted him called up during the latter part of the year, but by the time there was a spot for him the team was at the point in the season where the league only 4 emergency call-ups before the play-offs. Many people think Hansen will make the team next year in a 3rd-4th line capacity, but with the new GM coming in who knows. Mikkel Boedker (a Dane) is most likely going to be a top-ten pick in the upcoming draft, the Canucks should take him if he's available at the #10 spot, though that is unlikely. The Canucks are also notorious for going off the board with their draft picks though.

I have been following the Penguins in the playoffs. I dont follow the NHL in the regular season, but am a Pens fan in the playoffs (i think that is the DEFINITION of a fair weather fan lol). Crosby and Malkin are great to watch, they always pull of some amazing things that leave me scratching my head wondering how
I am about to go have some smoke, lay in my recliner, and watch the game right now, and see if the Pens can get the Senators out in 4

I'm not a fan of the Pens, but I cannot stand the Senators and watching you guys kick the living shit outta them has been quite enjoyable so far. The Penguins have undeniably the best young talent in the game, as long as they can resign most/some of their talent to decent contracts they are going to be a force for a long time.

Yeah, Bødker is (or will become) The Man. Lars Eller - his former teammate in Swedish junior hockey and through many years on various youth national teams - went as no. 13 in last years draft (St. Louis Blues), which is easily the best ever for a Dane. Bødker could (should?) do better than that. Also, expect Philip Larsen, Sebastian Dahm and Niclas Hardt to be drafted in what is surely the best ever Danish draft year.
I find it quite amazing to witness the development of Danish hockey during the last 10-15 years. I mean, when I was a kid having NHL Danish players was a weird dream, and so was the mere idea that the Danish national team could even get to _play_ the best countries in the world! Now Denmark has survived 5 years in the IIHC, 2 Danes are playing in or around NHL (Frans Nielsen, New York Islanders, became the first ever last January, Hansen was the second), while at least 4 or 5 players seem destined to go there some day. Hell, we might even qualify for the next Olympics (in Vancouver!) and field entire lines of NHL players there! Hopefully Hansen will be there as well.
This development have sparked quite some interest in hockey in DK, also for me. Added to that is that I've been dating a Finnish girl for 18 months now - and has lived in Finland for the last six months or so - and as the general sports freak I am, I have tried to follow 'the local sports'. And, obviously, Ice Hockey is the big one in this regard! (CutMeMick should be happy btw - Anaheim seem to be the team of choice in this country, if judged from the number of team jerseys seen around at least. The Selänne effect, I suppose).

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Sharks are up 4-1, Thornton has asserted himself this game and Cheechoo subsequently has 2 goals. The offense revolves around Thornton and when he's on, Marleau is on (a goal and an assist tonight) then the Sharks are hard to beat. Finally showing why they were everybody's pic and the HP is off the chains.
Power play goal for the Flames damn. Penalty kill has been terrible this series.
