Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Loves ruining a southpaw and is a classic counter puncher even at his age...
Vastly experienced and dirty with it plus Joe has NO experience at Light Heavy at all.
Just think he might have the awkward style to frustrate Cally and grind out a street war.
Just a gut feeling;)
Yours?

I appreciate what your saying, but Nard throws about 10 punches a round 3 of them are legal;D
Joe is to busy with good footwork as well as timing and closing the distance.. I hate to say this but Joe will get NO credit for beating Hopkins because I see this being the fight that Bernard looks his age... I would be suprised if Hopkins wins 3 rounds. Calzaghe by Lopsided UD

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Bika dragged Joe into an ugly fight a few years back and was nowhere near a Hopkins, that is a worry;)
Obviously being a Londoner like Joe (hehehe) i want him to batter Hopkins silly but he knows some cute tricks.
I like the one he got away with against Winky....pulling his man onto a lunging headbutt but cleverly blocking the refs vision of it with his arm!
Seen him do this a few times and if he can get his man to leak some claret then it seriously makes you change your gameplan.
Joe is a master at adapting to a style during a fight but Hopkins is strong, dirty and cute as f*ck with it.
Very clever fighter is Hopkins.

Not just the Bika fight Calzaghe also struggled in ugly fights with Reid, Salem.

I want Joe to kick the ever livin piss out of Hopkins, Joe has proven he is one tough cookie and is a master tecnician in his own right with his perfected craft... Hop will get old in the 1st 3 rounds and it will be apparent that he cant run with the big boys anymore...... Calzaghe will retire him
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
I agree...Hopkins WILL do a number on him.
I don't think we'll see Calzaghe with his usual workrate...not after he gets countered with a couple of straight rights.
I'll take Hopkins by unanimous decision.
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
I think a lot of people just think Calzaghe will be able to go in there and just out work Hopkins and throw punches from all angles. Thats not the case folks Hopkins can stop Calzaghe's work rate with clinches and etc. Calzaghe should box and use his Southpaw jab, if he gets involved on the inside against Hopkins he will get roughed up big time.
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Hey ICB I heard you have Calzaghe's career set.
Do you reckon Robin Reid was 'robbed' or should have got the verdict in their match.

It was a very close fight with Calzaghe winning the early rounds, then Reid started to come on strong in middle rounds catching Calzaghe constantly with lead right hands. Reid had a point deducted in the 8th round i think it was ?? the later rounds were close but what i noticed is that yes Calzaghe may have been outworking Reid in some rounds, but Reid was landing the much more hurtful blows as he was able to rock Calzaghe many times, and land good body shots. I had the fight a draw the last time i see it, but the judges score cards were terrible, all 3 judges had it 116-111, 116-111, 116-111.
I believe the punch stats were dead even as well both men landed exactly the same amount of punches if i remember right.

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
This fight is very high risk, low reward, at least in terms of reputation (though not in terms of money). He'll get no credit for the win, and he get killed in reputation if he loses to old man Bernie. Since Bernard has a good chance of winning, it's a big risk for him, but he'll get a good payday and if he wins, he sets himself up for one more career capping fight, with Pavlik or Taylor.

I think it's the toughest fight yet for JC, but think he nicks it 116-112

I'm gonna take Joe by MD.
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Swapped back to Hopkins again Smash?
Before the fight you'll be back on Calzaghe.. gauranteed.. then Hopkins, then Calzaghe....;D
Only problem I see for Joey boyo is the fight being in Vegas. He could get "robbed."
And even if not robbed, Hopkins will make the fight as boring and ugly as humanly possible.. so tough to score.
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
I cannot see anything other than a Galzaghe win. Sure it is his first time at light heavy and it is away from home and it is against a spoiler who once was a great fighter in his own country. It will be exactly like the Bika fight and Joe will out point him 115-113.
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
At first I thought it would be an easy UD for Joe, but loads of writers seem to be making a case for B-hop and they're making me a little twitchy, but that happens every Joe C fight for me.
Though B-hop was at middle for a long time, he does seem to have more physicallity than JC. IUt's going to be tough for Joe, but IMO it's his fight to lose. If he boxes behind his jab early he can get rounds in the bank, forcing B-hop to take the initiative later on then he can be the counter puncher. As long as JC doesn't make the mistakes, I feel he should win comfortably. He should be experienced enough by now, I think the Kessler fight was a good warm up for this one since he also followed a strategy of countering Joe with straight rights, as long as Joe doesn't give too many opportunities he should be all right.

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
I think Hopkins style is one which Calzaghe will have trouble with. But i don't see a 43 year old Hopkins being active enough to take advantage of the trouble he will cause calzaghe.
Calzaghe sometimes loses his composure when he's in with a dirty fighter. He's also guilty of trying to impress too much and leaving himself open to straight rights.
I reckon Hopkins will get inside his head but i don't think he has the workrate or power to do anything other than make the fight a bit scrappy. Calzaghe should win on workrate alone.
UD calzaghe.....in a fight that will actually not really be that close but the judges will have it 115-113 ish.
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Hopkins better be tip top fitness wise for this because JC will set off a fierce pace early on but i'm intruiged to see how the old master deals with it;)
Like i said i think he's got the experience to do it and force Joe to change his gameplan (which he will do) then back over to Hopkins to out think him in return.....
Can't wait for this one.

I don't see Hopkins "robbing" anyone. He is one of the more disliked fighters in boxing and if anything he'll be the one getting "robbed" just to be giving him the finger. Hopkins is easy to dislike. Other than being from another country (which is major), Joe Calzaghe is an immensely likeable guy. He beat the schmidt out of Lacy, a guy I really liked, and now I like him.

one can only hope VD.
This fight is totally sneaking up on me.. i've been so busy with school work and stuff, the fight is right around the corner.. Def my most anticipated of the year til now..
I hope Hopkins makes it a dirty ass fight, and the vegas judges score a close fight which could go either way, a UD for Hopkins just like Joe has gotten some gifts in the past ;D..

Joe got a gift when the ref stopped his fight with Byron Mitchell prematurely. Even though Mitchell landed the last punch.

Getting "robbed" hasn't got anything to do with how likeable you are it's about situations and connections.
1. This fight is a Golden Boy Promotion.. which favours Hopkins.
2. Calzaghe's a foreigner (as you stated ;)).
3. Hopkins has mentioned all through the making of this fight his motivation is AMERICA-vs-Britain.. this will only intensify when the promotion heats up nearer the off.
4. It's almost certain to be 3 American judges and a Hopkins freindly ref.
5. There's a strong chance Calzaghe's supporters will be as thick as Ricky Hatton's and boo the "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the off.. which will be the icing on the cake.
;)

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
I think it will be a really tough fight for Joe. As ICE says traditionally the fighters Calzaghe has had the most trouble with are those who employ rough house tactics and try to turn the fight into a physical brawl with headbutts, elbows, clinches etc.
There is nobody better at that in the whole of boxing than the Nard so it is a worry.
When you factor in that he is something like 11-0 against southpaws or something crazy, and on home turf, you really must like the odds that are on Hopkins.
It wouldn't suprise me if Joe gets caught like he's never been caught before and even hits the deck.
I see B Hops withering shots becoming more and more of a factor as the fight goes on.
It won't be an easy win for Joe at all in my mind.
Tough fight, made even tougher by the fact that most uneducated fans feel he should win easily. He's on something of a hiding to nothing.
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
....hopkins has the ability to beat anyone, joe is no different. Joe is probably going to be favored by most understandably, but how many times has hopkins been in that situation. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see hopkins win. It's a golden boy event, joe is a foreigner, american judges etc...all that stuff doesn't matter joe knows all this going in so that is more reason for him to cleary win this fight. The last thing we need is a close fight with a bunch of excuses afterward...he knows what he's up against yet he still signed the contract.....no excuses.

Add to the fact that Hopkins would never lose to a "White Boy." There's no doubt Calzaghe is losing his 0.

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Can someone tell me why Hopkin's record against southpaws is such an important factor in their reasoning?
Calzaghe's never lost to an orthodox fighter.

by "gifts" i don't mean gift decisions, or anything specifically to the extent that Calzaghe got a win that he didn't completely deserve.. With the exception of few fights, Calzaghe has clearly beaten his opposition, don't get me wrong..
what i'm saying is that he's constantly been fighting at home, with everything possible on his side.. The Robin Reid decision goes under this category, VD mentioned the Mitchell fight when Calzaghe first hit the deck, and there could have been controversy in that stoppage.. Even though Manfredo had no chance in hell to win their fight, but it was still one of, if not the worst stoppages i have seen.. He constantly has had this subconscious pampering.. that's all im saying.

exactly....
statistics are silly in the first place but come on thats a dumb question..
orthodox means a TRADITIONAL style.. the vast majority of fighters are orthodox.. you wouldn't say "he's never lost to a traditional fighter" it's obvious with his record..
southpaw's are the minority, which makes the Hopkins statistic interesting because he has fought a number of southpaws.. any time you have an orthodox vs southpaw match up, this statistic always comes up..
it's a given that a southpaw fighter will fight mostly orthodox fighters, so it's not an intriguing statistic as it is the norm in the sport.

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Agreed but Southpaws are traditionally the stylistic nightmare for a orthodaox fighter, parlay that with Calzaghe being the best fighter Hopkins ever faced and vice versa, but I see Joe being to busy and forcing Hopkins to fight or get overwhelmed
How many fighters has Hopkins ever fought with the workrate of Calzagheagain couple that with the fact that Hopkins is 43, fighters have been known to get old in a round and I think father time is gonna be floating across the pond with Calzaghe to kick the shit out of him;)

OK but Winky was half-robbed in that fight so it don't count.
All those other shiity ones though.. Fenster would murder 'em. Fact.

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Calzaghe will suffer the same fate all southpaws who have faced Bernard have. B-hop knows how to handle southpaws with that straight right. And he will slow even Calzaghe's workrate to a crawl. Hopkins by decision.

Calzaghe to benefit greatly from the extra weight and tear Hopkins a new one.

Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
My opinion on the fight Joe In a fairly ugly probably borin UD...Im posting in regards to one two posts about the byron mitchell fight being a premature stoppage?????
After about 20 unanswered punches Joe takes a second to speak to the ref while still connecting punch after punch without even looking after about 40 unanswered punches Byron stumbles to the ropes eyes glazed Joe bears down on him ready to reign in some more punches?? how can you call that pre mature:confused:
-
Re: Hate to say it but..Hopkins might do a number on Calzaghe!!!
Key issues I see are JC using speed and movement and those slaps to keep away from the past his prime Hopkins . If they get close that's when it could get interesting. I'm not picking it because I don't really care and too many variables to accurately pick. If it was a few years back, hell even two or three my answer would be Hopkins.
