Re: Can someone help me list all the upsts this year?
How in the world was Casamayor beating Katsidis an upset?
It was an absurdity that he was considered a betting favourite considering the only recognisable name on his resume was the mediocre and light punching Graham Earl a man with whom he went life and death.
Casa has a whose who of the lightweight division on his resume and is one of the craftiest, slickest fighters in the game. One bad performance and everyone gets on the Kats bandwagon just like they did the Miranda one.
I was suprised by how close the Casa fight was, I expected Katsidis to get schooled but he did better than I thought.
He should never have been the betting favourite though.
Nearly always when a big punching brawler goes up against a slick crafty boxer the bookies and everyone else seems to think the puncher will steamroller him.
Yet as history shows 8 times out of 10 its the puncher who gets knocked out.
When will people learn? :)

Oh yeah definitely K9 that was a shock, De La Rosa is a bum though, he got stopped by another journeyman with a losing record last year.

Re: Can someone help me list all the upsts this year?
I have to agree with bilbo here and say that in no way was Casamayor's Victory over Katsidis an upset.
anyways...
how about
Kassim Ouma just lost to K-9 Bundrage
Although Verno Phillips just beat Corey spinks and Phillips is a good fighter that might be considered an upset
You mentioned Andy Lee losing to Vera
Diaz loosing to Cambell
Also rising star Kiko Martinez 17-0 (14 ko's) lost to unknown Rendall Munroe
Roman Karmazin lost a title to Alex Bunema
i think thats it for now....

Re: Can someone help me list all the upsts this year?
Pretty much all have been named though a couple others.
Matt Godfrey fell to Rudolf Kraj in Germany. Apparently Kraj is pretty good but still, Godfrew was regarded as one of the better prospects. He was Teddy Atlas' favorite.
Wayne Braithwaite KO'd Cuban Olympian Joan Pablo Hernandez today. That is certainly an upset although Braithwaite imo, has always been very dangerous.

Good call on the Matt loss.

Re: Can someone help me list all the upsts this year?
Oh ok my badI thought most chose Kats to beat Casamayor judging by how bad Cas looked v Santa Cruz. I think it was still a shock that Cas stopped him. Some nice calls there, amazing to see THAT many upsets by March alone??! Cotto and Margarito better be ready!

Re: Can someone help me list all the upsts this year?
Wow, a few I didn't know about there..K9 over Ouma..wow! The contenders seem to be hanging pretty well with the big boys these days.

I woulnd't say the Godfrey fight was an upset. He wasn't even the betting favourite here in Europe. Kraj fighting at home was odds on to win unless Godfrey knocked him out.

Nah many people thought Casamayor would come in fired up and interested for Katsidis fight unlike he was in Cruz fight. I was one of those people but sorry i have quickly pull Bilbo up on something.
Bilbo you said Katsidis went life and death with Graham Earl are you kidding me mate ?? except for the flash knockdown in the 2nd round Katsidis gave Earl a one sided beating and Earl would only show flashes of offense.

Ice his legs completely went. If he was in there with anyone other than Graham Earl he'd would have got sparked after knockdown. It's only becuase Earl was a light hitter and was on the verge of being knocked out himself that he couldn't capitalise.
I'm sorry but anyone who gets almost KTFO by Graham Earl should never have been a betting favourite against Casamayor.
He only confirmed that further with his life and death (even you'll agree on this one) struggle with Czaar Amonsat, a complete unknown who took him to the brink.
And the funny thing is I stil think Casa is largely done, it's just Katsidis is a club fighter with a big heart and a good stamina.
He'll lose to any of the top 5 at lightweight, even David Diaz Ko's him imo.

Agree there, Katsidis' legs don't hold up very well at all when he gets tagged.

The Williams fight was an upset but his chin was always a liability even in his amateur days

Re: Can someone help me list all the upsts this year?
What about Koba Gogoladze, (Although I never really rated him seeing him lose out badly to Alex Arthur) he signed the big deal with Golden Boy made his way over to the States only to be brutally KO'ed in the 1st round of Golden Boy debut by a 13-5 Ji Hoo Kim, who had never fought outside Asia and never beaten anyone.
Must have been egg on a few faces I think..

I think so, Gogoladze has a weird style & looked to be on the verge of a stoppage himself until he got splattered

Its surprising to me that when I think about it I think Bunema beating Karmazin surprised me more than anything. Some fights that are being thought of by some as upsets weren't even really upsets to me, Casa over Kats, JuanMa over Ponce, Yoan losing to Braithwaite, etc., some were prospects losing fights and you can never be too surprised at what happens to a relatively untested prospect, and some guys were upset by solid pros, Spinks-Phillips, Diaz-Campbell, Williams-Quintana, those all to some degree surprised me but all three winners are solid guys.
Its not that I was so surprised that Karmazin lost because I thought he was just that great, I thought he was one of the top 154 pounders but not a P4P type guy by any means, its just that I thought so little of Alex Bunema his whole career. I just never thought he was a very good fighter. And to knock Karmazin out, that really surprised me. That was a Sturm-Castilliejo type surprise to me.

This was no upset IMO. It was a suprise he KOed him in one though. This is the same for Williams - Quintana that same night. I'm sitting in my sofa waiting to see two good puertorrican fighters. I never expected to see two 1st round KOs.
