I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
Everyone and I mean everyone knows I was Calzaghe's biggest critic and detractor only 2nd to VD but as time went on I started to realize his greatness and admitally so became a huge fan after the Kessler fight.
Now I look forward to his match with Hopkins since it will be the 1st time I sit down and enjoy a fight of his from a fan standpoint instead of watching to hope he loses.. But I hope he dosent lose and dissapoint me, I assure everyone though I wont jump ship if he loses to Hopkins.
Anyone else feel the same?
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
Yeah man I really hope he doesn't dissapoint, I have a feeling though
he might just manage to stop Hopkins!
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I can't think of another fighter who had a single fight mean more to his legacy than Joe Calzaghe and this fight with Hopkins. If he loses, he'll be all but forgotten in history. If he wins, he stamps his legacy as one of the greats of this era. Simple as that. No excuses either way.
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I think this is a huge fight for both, remember Joe is moving to fight Hop. Nards best scalps have been from naturally smaller men. I give the edge to Calzaghe on workrate, we all saw Taylor start fast out of the blocks 2x against Hopkins and Nard came awake in the 2nd half of the fight when Taylor faded, Calzaghe wont fade and will be on Hopkins for 36 minutes, Hopkins dosent throw enough anymore, sure he will try to spoil with the roughhouse stuff but I think Joe has tremendous footwork for a white boy;D and combine that with he speed and closing the distance will help him prevail convincingly....
I still maintain Hopkins will be lucky to win 3 rounds of the fight
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I am rooting for Joe...He has the goods and he has the desire....I wish this fight came off years ago.....
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I hope Joe loses. I hate him going on all the time about undefeated this and undefeated that and if he was Floyd Mayweather (See I ain't a Floyd hater) and fought the likes of Corrales, Castillo etc then I wouldn't be assed but I have never seen him say a sentence without the word 'undefeated' being in it. I want his '0' to go desperately, he has only faced 1 prime threat in 44 opponents and even that was in his backyard (As Usual)
Come on Bernard, do the business for me will you, PLEASE!!!

Yeah I feel the same but it was the Lacy fight that made me a believer.
Everyone knows Joe cant resist showing off and playing to the crowd but I wonder if he'll get chance to do it with B - Hop. He did it vs Lacy cuz the atmos got to him . I think in the States, with massive support in his biggest he will have to try and show boat at some point . It will be wierd to see someone playing with a guy as good as Hopkins .

Same goes for me...I was one of the biggest Joe Calzaghe detractors you could find but he eventually won me over....After saying he would lose his next bout since he fought Bika I finally became a fan after the Kessler bout...

If your hoping Calzaghe will win, than you are going to be disappointed. Hopkins is going to smash that white boy.

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
Have to Agree in one respect JT.I really have done a turn around from dismissing Calzaghe to being a big fan after the Mitchell Fight.I love his pure desire ,Workrate and Attitude. He and Hopkins have alot in common with speaking there minds and Huge chips on there shoulders,as well as not getting the full attention of the masses until somewhat late in career.I have followed Hopkins from first seeing him Pulverize and mop the floor with Dennis Milton years ago and have been a fan ever since.I try to avoid cutting up Fighters in an attempt to build up another but I do believe this will be an honest and all out top notch fight.I am picking Hopkins to win this one but do agree that He will not have the luxury of laying back in task-master fashion looking for the perfect shots.Calzaghe will demand respect from the outset and walk to hopkins with a full arsenal of speed and offense. He will not be in awe of Hopkins and can get "crafty" ;) as well. The key here IMO is hopkins MUST break Calzaghes tempo and get him off rhythm and Back him up.Also I believe Calzaghe should not just walk in thinking that a blitzkrieg offense will simply topple Hopkins.Much respect to the victor here, None of this B.S from both sides detractors...."Hopkins was old and past it,Not active,The timing was right for Joe"....OR "Calzaghe was not that great, over rated,Froze in the States".......etc,etc :blahbla:.
No excuses,Both Fighters here gets nothing but respect...win,lose,or Draw!

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
i don't think he'll dissapoint as he'll throw alot of punches, maybe not over 1000 like he has been but 700 will still be alot of workrate, he keeps going at a high level for many rounds and he maybe the first to stop hopkins..........all of this will get him high rateings
i'm just hopeing its a good fight, we get a classic boxing contest....wheather we do or not its goner be an interesting affair
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
i dont think the beating calzaghe is gonna take will disappoint anyone, it will be quite entertaining ;)
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
also, endless random punches, which is what calzaghe has even said he will do when hopkins starts blocking shots, is NOT how u beat someone who has defense...
look at soliman - wright...
that is what we may see ;)

Joe's real good, but I just see Hopkins frustrating Joe to the point of getting careless, and ko'ing Calzaghe. Should be a barnburner though.
I just think Hopkins is going to shine on this night; though I am hoping for a Calzaghe win. Going to be an ugly, inside fight.
Should be interesting to see who the crowd wil root the most for; and if it will affect Joe's mental state, especially if he gets in deep.
For me; Hopkins by late ko.
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
its a great match but i dont think it will be a great spectacle for a casual fan. there will be some good boxing but a lot more clinching and fouling than we want to see (mostly down to Hopkins)
i hope im wrong though;)
-
Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
Its not going to be like the Lacy fight and he wont throw as many punches as against Kessler. But Calzaghe will most likely dominate the fight. Its Calzaghe who will dictate the pace and up it when he chooses. Hopkins at 43 doesnt have the legs to go with that. I wouldnt be surprised to see Hopkins TKO'd actually but the distance is much more likely.

Yawn.Just keep telling yourself that one.If Calzaghe can dominate this fight...I invite him In the Attempt at It and encourage him to believe that fairy tale.

I pick Calzaghe to win this one but to say he will Dominate Hopkins is just silly talk....Hopkins is not a fighter who gets dominated...you can out work him, out point him but not dominate him...He is too good for that

I said it would most likely be a dominating Calzaghe showing. Everything points towards it. Going on Calzaghes recent showings and Hopkins recent showings especially. I see a dominating performance as one in which Calzaghe (on my card;)) wins about 9 of the rounds. Anything more will just be showing off! ;D There is nothing particularly ludicrous in such a suggestion really.

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I want JC to win this fight so bad and if he wins and looks good, surely he is a P4P number 1 contender especially considering Floyd' biggest matches this year will be Oscar2 and the Big Show.

Check it out on boxrec coz I ain't.
America is where the big fights happen and to secure or strengthen your legacy I should say, you have to go over to the US to fight at MSG or Vegas etc, thats what I mean. Calzaghe ain't a major box office in the states coz he fought in UK all his career and ain't fought over there yet, but he will be after he faces Hopkins and wins.

Bernard Hopkins
Well I did check it out.
1994, He visited Ecaudor to fight for the Vacant Middleweight Title and he drew. He went down twice as well in the 5th and 7th.
So the only time he stepped out of hiw own backyward he was not up to scratch.
He dragged Segundo Mercado back to USA for a rematch and won TKO 7th rd.
And buy the way, this fella he fought has a garbage record.

Oh yeah , it goes without saying that this will be a dirty fight that will disapoint anyone expecting to see a good fight . Hopkins has never been a good fight and he certainly isnt going to start now . Good fighter but not good to watch . Joe likewise may be dragged into scrappy action and perform poorly as we saw vs Bika and Starie but those fights were just mark in time bouts . Big fights like Eubank , Lacy and Kessler, Joe egst up for so he will be focused and at his best . His dad isnt gonna allow any messing about and Joe will be in for an earful if he doesnt land twice as many as Hop in each round.

But yet again as i said to you in the other thread when has Calzaghe ever looked good when someone spoils his fighting ?? Salem, Reid, Bika, all made Calzaghe look average when they roughed him up. Hopkins is one of the best technical fighters in modern day boxing and also one of the dirtiest there is no way in hell Calzaghe will have a dominating performance against Hopkins.

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I do not even think this will be Joe's hardest fight, what worries me more is that when Joe beats Hopkins there will be every excuse under the sun coming out as to why....and not least " Yeah but he wouldn't have beat him in his prime" this fight may get messy and untidy at times and certainly won't be easy for either....simply put, at this stage in there careers Joe is the better option and fresher fighter,
The guy ain't been beat amateur or pro since 1990 and this is his destiny....is Joe so far beneath Taylor that the form line should suggest a Hopkins win.....I don't think so, do you think Hopkins hits so much harder than say Lacy, that he can knock Joe out I don't think so, in fact has Joe ever looked like being knocked out NO...And to Hopkins, is he as fast or as strong even as Kessler, again I don't think so...
There may be those who think that he can hustle Joe out of it...but on what basis is this, it for sure ain't because he is bigger and or stronger....Joe is as strong and as rough and tuff as they come, with all the ability in the world,
And I think the opposite to the Hopkins fans in hat Joe will not be phased fighting in the states, he is relishing this he really is, and I feel he will frustrate the holy hell out of Hopkins, and though I don't feel he will knock Hopkins out, I do feel that he may stop him with a later onslaught that Hopkins won't be able to cope with and the Ref intervening
Lets look at the two fighters today and be realistic in our assessments...This is a bigger fight for Joe and he will want it more...because like it or not HE IS STILL UNDEFEATED AS A PRO, all Southey's are prone to the right hand, but is to days Hopkins fast enough, or does he hit hard enough to single shot Joe out of it, I don't think so, is he busy enough to out work Joe, again I don't think so...
In all honesty, other than being in his own backyard, and getting rough....factors I really believe Joe is relishing, what else has Hopkins got...and before I get my head kicked in verbally by violent demise, please understand all I have typed is done out of an honest assessment of two Boxers I have the ultimate respect for, and not on some silly fan boy basis......
I honestly can not see what this years Hopkins has that in the past could not cope with Taylor, but can now cope with Joe Calzaghe...So Joe to win by three or four rounds with a possibility of a late stoppage, on accumalation rather than single shots....
Joe will win because he has to, and in the past when questions have been asked, he has always delivered, has Hopkins always delivered..... Ill say it one last time, I don't think so...

Have you actually watched the fight ?? Hopkins didn't get acclimated to the altitude which resulted in a lackluster performance. But he still should of won despite being floored x2. He won majority of the rounds and Mercado got a hometown decision.

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I've got to say, for some reason I really hope Calzaghe DOES dissapoint. Or at least loses;D Of course I don't hope for a lackluster fight, but I just don't want to see Calzaghe do too well.... Don't know why, I guess I'm just a sucker for the underdog, old fighter, etc. I also dislike Calzaghe, I think he's a tremendous fighter who could have been right in the mix YEARS ago, but has just never pursued the big fights. Kessler was a damn good win and an excellent fighter, but there are still so many more good fighters Joe should have fought years ago. I feel Glen Johnson would have given him hell at any point, and the fact that Calzaghe has withdrew from fighting him several times never sat well with me. Honestly I find Joe very entertaining to watch, and I hate the way Ricky Hatton fights... But I have FAR more respect for Ricky since he left Frank Warren and actually sought out big fights in the US. Calzaghe has been content to just fight whoever Warren finds for him, in Wales, his entire career. I think Hopkins was dead right in that press conference, where he said Calzaghe is fighting him because there's really nowhere else to go. I also think Calzaghe is only taking this fight on foreign soil due to Hopkins age, which drastically influences my wanting Hopkins to win. Aside from all of that, I find Calzaghe a very boring person, I really never want to hear him say anything, wheras to me Hopkins is captivating, although obviously not too bright he is entertaining to listen to. He is the one selling this fight, he sure as hell didn't have to take the fight, wheras like I say Calzaghe had little other options. I would just absolutely love it if Hopkins had it left in him to pull this off.

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
can't wait for the fight. I feel Hopkins has nothing to lose and everything to win by taking this fight, if he loses he is still good but old and past it and if he wins he goes up big time in all time rankings. for joe taking this fight he risks alot if he loses but wins all kinds of respect if he wins.
prediction Hopkins UD

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I'm another guy who would gun calzaghe at every oppurtunity but he did win me over with that stirring performance against Kessler. I don't know who I want to win..from a boxing stand-point it would be great for either fighter to win. Hopkins to pull out a last big performance and retire or Calzaghe to scalp another big name and go up another notch.
I do think this talk of him competing for P4P number one is silly though..he left it far too late imo for any talk about him reaching the top of that list. The competition he has faced previously doesn't allow for it.
Their styles are going to be a major factor in the end result of this fight.

Re: I hope the Hell Calzaghe dosent dissapoint
I see Calzaghe starting very fast in the first couple of rounds then settling down, he will continue to set the pace for most of the fight.Hopkins will cause JC some problems he is to good a fighter to go through a whole fight and not have his moments. I see Calzaghe winning 8 rounds to 4 .
