Who wins?
Love Phillips, and I am not big on Forrest but Vernon is too much for Phillips at this stage. Both are long in the tooth but Forrest too rangy, too quick & too down the middle for Phillips.
I guess Phillips is tired of being champion already
IMO, a Phillips - Spinks rematch should take priority over anything Phillips wants. Phillips had no real effective offense unless you count wild punches and far out lunges an offense and he won a few rounds off the fact that the punches he did land were a bit louder and that the world just seems to hate Cory Spinks.
Forrest is a very accurate puncher, has a good jab and movement and I think he keeps Phillips outside and I think Phillips takes quite a beating. He's not hard to hit and Vernon actually has the power to make his punches count.
This would be for the vacant Ring Jr Middleweight championship so IMO it's more important than a Spinks/ Phillips return.
I think Forrest would take a UD, but wouldn't it be great for a veteran like Phillips to grab a championship!
This fight makes sence. They are the top 2 light middleweights, unless you include ODLH. Vernon would be the favorite to win, but I like Vernos chances. His style could work well against Forrest imo.
forrest wins
Yeah he did true,
Forrest has a style that is pure and he is solid while he gets his own way with it.
But looking at the odd times he has come apart it was a real unravelling and he couldnt get the act back into place.
I give anyone a hope with him for that reason.
Forrests style is all about control.
Which fights are you referring to? Apart from Mayorga 1 I think he's fought very well. The 1st time I watch Quartey/ Forrest live I thought Quartey had won but on reviewing the fight a couple of times I had Forrest winning each time!
I was mostly reffering to Mayorgas dismantelling of him.
I know styles make or break fights but that showed a chink in his armour that i feel is still there underneath this new and reformed Vernon.
I think he is solid ,always did, but I also think he can come unravelled if someone pulls on that thread again its not something you can train out, that type of thing is in the phyce.
Maybe its just me,but I never did see him (even as an amature) as being diverse enough to change tactics mid fight if required.
Ive been clinging to the hopes of a rematch there but No dice.I still think Ike nicked it,But Forrest had radar on those uppercuts,Really buzzed Quartey bigtime.Bunema is a wild card.Glad he crashed through the gates and he might stay on a role.My biggest regret of not Purchasing the Jones/Tito "event" was missing his sudden win.Just glad the Jr,Middles are getting some life.
Yeah I think Mayorga got in his head that 1st fight! The 2nd could have gone either way IMO. I don't think Forrest will let that happen again. He came out with bombs in that 1st fight that woulda dropped a lota other top welters. But Mayorgas steel chin is now well documented & he caught Forrest with that big right. I can't see Forrest getting drawn into that sorta fight again he's got better skills to rely on!
I hope so;
but I fear it was a mental unravel that could occur again under other circumstances.
If anyone stood in front of any pro and lent forwards poking out a chin, you would hope the other proffesional fighter would be able to rethink his position instantly and go a slight feint, then full uppercut with full leg lift.
That should of and could of been all over ,right then and there.
But you cant do it /if you cant think it.
Easy to say when we're nice & safe outside the ring. That 1st fight was a mini war the whole 3 rounds. Forrest was bouncing bombs off Mayorga from the beginning Mayorgas chin is like granite you gotta break it down gradually. Forrest just got caught with a lucky shot IMO. I don't think there are many who would have shaken it off! But others would have avoided it!
