Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
I for one think Gomez is going in with a lot to prove to himself and fans/media, The boy has heart and I believe Cotto will find out this guy can bang and he is the smaller man. Everyone here, is saying Cotto this, Cotto that. Just watch Gomez stop Cotto.

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Are you the same guy who just posed this question to Dan Rafael in his chat today?
SHM (Shirley, NY): Call me crazy and/or nuts but I think Gomez will win and win easily. I like Cotto as a fighter but styles makes fights and Gomez has the style to beat Cotto and beat him easily. Thoughts?
Dan Rafael: (1:31 PM ET ) That you need to back away from the computer very slowly with your hands and up and remember that nobody will hurt you. Everything is going to be OK in that padded cell.
;) ;D

LOL, No... I have mad respect for Cotto's skill, It just seems to me that Gomez wants it more.

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Gomez will look a division bigger when they are in the ring together, you can see the size difference when they stand next to each other.
Gomez is used to fighting bigger men whereas Cotto has yet to fight a genuine welter, all his welter opponents have moved up, I think he might struggle with Gomez strength, Gomez takes a good shot and Cotto has never been a big puncher, if he cant hurt Gomez I see Alofonso bullying Cotto back.
I remember when Cotto fought Ndou he was nearly running backwards
Cotto has a decent guard but its high, if Gomez can use his strength to bully Cotto to the ropes and rip away with body shots he can stop him.
Goomez is on a high at the mo with his last couple of wins, he didnt get hurt whereas Cotto did, I can see Gomez wearing Cotto down and making him fight harder than anyone else has

I give Gomez chance. All he needs is a good punch and then follow it. But that goes to any fighter at any fight.
If gomez wins well at least Cotto loses to a guy I like to watch fight. But I just can't see it.

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
I really don't understand why Gomez isn't being given any type of shot in the fight. Gomez is a big guy and while he may not be a puncher, I could actually see Gomez imposing his size on Cotto. I think Cotto will win the fight but Gomez is determined. Let's point out that Gomez has never been stopped or really outclassed either. This is guy who beat decent career light middleweights, middleweights, and super middleweights. Cotto better be prepared or he might be in for the surprise of his life.

I'd love to see Gomez suprise people here but to be honest although he has never been down or stopped in his career he has looked almost out on his feet at times, and this being in just 5 or 8 rounders.
Jesse Feliciano was able to overpower him in their third fight and had the fight been a 12 rounder would almost certainly have won as Gomez was fading fast. He has fought the bigger men in guys like Manfre!do, Brinkley and Ahmed Kuddour, all middleweights, but they were only 5 round fights!
Whether he can hang a full 12 rounds with Cotto is another thing entirely.
I think he'll put up a brave challenge but the closer we get to it, the more I'm thinking the ref will be stepping in to save him around the 9th or 10th rounds

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
If I was a betting man I would not lay my money on Gomez but with that being said...I don't think this is going to be a blowout like many think...Cotto is going to work hard for his win in this fight...Gomez is grossly underestimated by many.....IMO put him in the ring with any of the guys that beat him on the contender and he he hands them their asses....Gomez will be around a while and a threat for a while

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
I agree, there will be an OH SHIT moment were Cotto is dancing like he did against Corley or may go down, but I see him grinding out another one...
Although I saw something in the Mosely fight that most downplay, Cotto got to a point with Mosely when he realized he couldnt impose his will and he slammed on the brakes and threw it in reverse, just seemed unlike Cotto to do that... Is there anything to that? Maybe but again Cotto can Box well so I'm sure he has a plan B;)

It was about the 10th or 11th round

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
"Gomez does have a chance" !!! Yours truly................ andy lee and juan diaz.
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
You guys are out of your damn minds. Gomez will have a suprisingly good second round and everybody will wonder. Every time Cotto got hurt he came back, assumed control and handled his bidness.
Looking at Cotto's recent resume...Does Gomez have the speed of Judah? Does he have the skill of Mosley? Is he as crafty as Quintana? I would guess no. So how does he win this fight?

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
gOMEZ IS TOUGH BUT i THINK HE'S TOO LIMITED TO BEAT cOTTO.Ooops, caps!:(

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
I see like this , Gomez has only 2 chances to win this fight and be crowned champion.-
1. None
2. And none wot so ever
Its that simple

Arum said to himself: "THis kid will kill my small piggy bank$ (Chavez Jr.) so fuck it let me just put him with Cotto and take him out of the picture"..;D

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Cotto will win but I hope it is an entertaining fight. Styles make fights and this should be another entertaining Cotto fight.
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Gomez may last afew rounds longer than most people think cuz he is use to fighting naturally bigger men .
Whether it goes 12 or late stoppage , bottom line is Cotto wins .
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Yea , sure , i will give Gomez a chance to not be KO , if he outbox , against Cottos pressure in all 12 rounds ..........

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Cant believe the size difference, Gomez is a big boy and is tough. The guy can absorb some big time punishment curious to see how Cotto reacts if he cant impose his will like he does customarily
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Cotto looks pretty damn mean and inshape as usual we are gonna be in for a good treat tonite with both fights
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Gomez is going down from a kidney punch.
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
I think Cotto will win but I put $40 on Gomez because the odds were so bad for him. I bet him to win at +850, so if he wins that $40 will go a long way haha.
I figure it will be a tougher fight than people expect, Gomez is the biggest man like everyone said, he is extremely durable and has a ton of heart. He's not someone who is going to fold up mentally like Zab Judah when Cotto pressures him. I'm looking forward to this one, I think it will be a lot better and more compeditive than people expect!
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Im with the consensus that Cotto should win albeit with it being trickier than initially anticipated.
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Anybody see how uncomfortable Gomez looked against Ben Tackie's pressure?
He'll fight hard but he has no advantages outside of maybe size (but not power), chin and maybe heart although I have no reason to question Cotto's heart.

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Or how Gomez looked against Feliciano?
I'm talking to myself now
Cotto will look great tonight. Like most of us I was wrong on Diaz-Campbell but Campbell's a different level of fighter than Gomez. Just don't see it happening tonight.

Yeah I think the same. I didn't think Gomez would even beat Gatti but it happened that Gatti was absolutely shot to pieces. Gomez at the very best is a fringe contender and he's probably not even that. Like you said, a lot of people point to the upsets of Diaz and Lee, but Lee wasn't in the least bit proven and Nate Campbell is a quality fighter. Just don't think the same of Gomez, I think he's going to look extremely slow and outclassed tonight.

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Interesting thing is that ODLH facing someone that doesn't have a chance is the worst thing ever but Cotto facing a guy that doesn't have a chance instead of a bigger name is COMPLETELY ACCEPTABLE, go figure:rolleyes:.

I actually thought about the same thing. I don't think people have a problem with Forbes-DLH so much as they do DLH-PBF and in order for the latter not to happen, they need De La Hoya to lose which Forbes probably isn't going to make happen. Because no one can honestly complain about De La Hoya's choice of opponents, he has the best resume of the last 15 years.

Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
Man I stand corrected big time..... Cotto put an inhumane beating on Gomez... Seriously I be suprised if he didnt ruin Gomez career
-
Re: Nobody giving Gomez a chance.
WOW, I mean I thought Gomez would come in and try to use massive amounts of punches to keep Cotto off him and from the first second of the fight Cotto had him scared.
Gomez has a ton of heart but he was just out gunned and for a welterweight to do that to Gomez who had never been stopped or down in his career ...that's really impressive
