Friday Night Fights: Kevin Johnson - Terry Smith

Pretty lousy looking card tonight but you never know. There is no depth to it though. I imagine more time then usual will be filled with analysis of tomorrow night's big event.

In the main event is upstart Kevin Martin whom I have never seen. So that's that. I'll be looking for an American who might have a shot at the title. We saw Chazz on Wednesday, Estrada before that and going back a little bit saw Travis Walker this year too. We'll see where Martin fits among them.

Across the ring is Terry Smith. About a year ago, it seemed everything was going right for Smith. He was coming off an exciting victory over Kelvin Davis and poised to make a final run at the heavyweight division. But then he ran into the jabs and right hands of Rob Calloway who reignited his career with a shocking win from the underdog role. Smith was seemingly shocked as he was outjabbed and hit consistently with straight shots as he lost to the smaller man. Since that loss he has turned in a decision loss to none other then Robert Hawkins.

Now he appears to be not a gatekeeper but rather a stepping stone for the younger Martin. While I haven't seen him in action, Martin only has 6 KO's in his 18 wins so it looks like we're in for a night of the always exciting 10 round heavyweight decision.

You mean Kevin Kingpin Johnson? Yeah he's lacking in power big time but has one of the best jabs in HW division IMO. He's one of those mouthy guys not a fan favorite. He has skills but the power is about lhw level. He should control the fight with the jab. Johnson UD.

The opener should be a good rematch the first was a close brawl.

I had to bail Wednesday, those damn fights started way to late for me to stay up for the whole thing. :(

Wednesday was ridiculous how long they postponed that. At least it wasn't stuck behind the Padres-Rockies game that went 22 innings.

Jones isn't that bad of a fighter, I imagine his record is due to mismanagement a lot of it. He was in there with Alfonzo Gomez at 19 years old when Stacy Goodson was his manager. He definitely doesn't look like your typical 13-6 fighter.

Amir Khan in the booth not bad. He really doesn't seem to be the cocky villain he's made out to be by some.

This is a pretty good fight to and wow that uppercut from Jones he just landed was nice.

Jones ran out of gas around the 6th last fight they had, and it was a 8 rounder, I'm looking for Gonzales to pick it up as it goes.

Jones dominated that fight, Gonzales just fought the wrong fight and didn't change up much. Jones surprised me a bit with his stamina I thought he would tire more.

Not a bad fight and pretty good performance from Jones. Good to see a fighter so young with that many losses still have that fight in him and he just outworked Gonzalez.

Not a bad little scrap.

Carson is usually good for ESPN fights, but nothing more than that.

Wow,Calzaghe even has Ribs in his chest.The arms on Hopkins look a little to Thick....If that makes since.

Well Johnson is looking to trade more which is good to see but I think Smith may have got that round. Johnsons best punch besides his jab seems to be his counter left hook.

This a pretty good fight. And damn Byrd looks cracked the fukk out
