Hopkins won in my eyes Calzaghe didn't do enough to take it
Yeah.
Hopkins won an Oscar for best actor.
I had Calzaghe up by 4 rounds....Calzaghe took the fight to Hopkins and besides the knockdown Joe took control of the fight and beat up Hopkins who only landed an occasional right cross after that.
I am happy Joe won after the bullcrap Hopkins pulled with the low blows
Hopkins won that if Calzaghe won he wouldn't have been so shocked even Barry and steve in the setanta studio would have been lively they were a bit shell shocked all you Calzaghe fans know deep down he lost.
Well I thank God that your Monkey azz was not one of the judges.
;D
B-HOP Talked all that shiet and did nothing. He got lucky with a flash knocked down. He should have went to war and maybe he would have won.
I saw B-POP running most of the night and hold half the other part of the night ;D
Props to Calzaghe, he adapted and clearly won. I had it 115-112 for Joe. Hopkins looked his age, but take nothing away from Joe, he was the better fighter.
Hopkins looked tired and wanted out of the fight kind of.
The worst thing that happened for B-hop was knocking Joe down with that right in the 1st round, he spent the rest of the fight looking for the same punch, but Joe adapted and never gave it to him.
Hopkins had never been a favorite of mine, but he dropped a couple notches tonight. He got beat.
Joe impressed me with his smarts and actually it looked like he got in Bernards head a little by the end. very fun fight to watch. I watch most of the fights with guys who have boxed and its almost uncanny how they see things. A couple called a right hand KD for bernard as soon as the fight started based on the way Joe was coming in. But Joe adjusted accordingly and won the fight.
Props to Joe! Tough fight to win and he out thought a master. I was way more impressed with his smarts than his skills.
Bewrnard should retire.
I give hopkins credit for his fighting ability.
I was worried when calzaghe went down, it was on his nose and not chin and he got up immeadiately but it was a great test for joe.
Hopkins showed that he is a great counter puncher with probably his best performance in a long time.
However the dirtyness from hopkins was a joke, the claiming of low blows was pathetic when everyone saw it wasnt a low blow. The use of the head was pathetic, immense clinching made for an ugly fight...he really did try everything in the book (or, not allowed in the book, to win). I didnt like this aspect of it AT ALL!
However as a true champ, calzaghes class came through at the end, bar the 9th, the last 6 rounds were all calzaghe, hopkins only took the 9th because of the rest he forced (by cheating) when it clearly was not a low blow.
I dont like cortez' referring though, it was too leanient towards hopkins who constantly broke the rules by use of the head. BUT I MUST SAY that i have respect for cortez in that he saw that hopkins was cheating and did not deduct a point for the 'pretend low blow'.
All in all on my scorecard it was as follows.
1. hop 10,8
2. hop
3. hop
4. calz
5. calz
6. calz
7. draw
8. calz
9. hop
10. calz
11. calz
12. calz
Giving the overall decission to calzaghe by 115, 113
The judges decissions were all over the place, only 1 got it right i thought, 115, 113 to calzaghe.
Dont know how the others gave it 114,113 bhop and 116,11 calzaghe.
In summary calzaghe showed his champ ability to work out hopkins (something very very difficult to do), he went down in first round from some great boxing by bernard but claz forced his way back into the fight by workrate and managing to plant the most punches on bhop that anyone has ever done before.
Of course there will be doubters but any legitimate boxing fan knows that calzaghe is the real deal, he got knocked down in the first only to come back and start dicatating against the great hopkins.
Respect to both fighters, but the champ won on the day. It was in the later rounds where i knew bhop was gone because calzaghe rocked him with a good combo, i thought bhop was gonna go down if joe hit him a few more times, probably stay down, but bhop managed to clinch (suprise suprise lol)...it was clear that whilst his philly style and defense/counter was top class, joe started dicatating the fight and adaopted later on to bring his game in, hopkins trid every dirty trick but calzaghe was just too good for him.
Calzaghe to fight jones next and beat him (either in millenium stadium, madison square or vegas), then in his final fight beat pavlik (in vegas) and then retire totally unbeaten 47, 0 A true cut above the rest:)
To have Calzaghe winning 7 of last 8 and 9 of last 10 is just ridiculous.
I agree that a few rounds were tough to score on the fly but I think the right guy got the decision.
Stevie Wonder saw it the same way, Bruno ;D
I scored it for Joe as Hopkins just retreated and stayed mostly in a defensive shell. First rule of boxing is to throw punches and Hopkins was either unable to or unwilling.
I am not sure either fighter was hurt too bad...Calzaghe did go down and he did take some big shots but he was never wobbled or visibly in trouble at any point in time.
Hopkins caught some solid shots from Joe as well....I think the thing with Joe's power is that it's not thudding, it's more like Floyd Mayweather's it's quick and accurate BUT he throws a lot more and therefore it's speed and accumulation of punishment that does a fighter in vs Joe and not just one huge shot like Hopkins does (on occasion) usually he sets up his punches via combinations.
I have thought hard about this….I was too shocked when the result was read out. B-Hop got on his bike way to many times. At worse I thought it would be a draw. I can’t believe Joe deep down must know that he was a tad bit lucky. If I was Jermaine Taylor I would be calling out for Joe! It might sound silly but it would make sense! Ok go ahead an laugh at me!
all you Hopkins fans I feel for ya but to say he won is just absurd.Come on landed the cleaner punches maybe 1 of 5 punches landed in a round for Hopkins.Yes it was harder but Joe would answer with 5 "slaps" to hopkins 1 in the rounds. As far as the foul I knew exactly what happened to Bernard it actually happened to me not long ago his cup pinched his balls and boy I'll tell ya you feel that all the way down to your toes, but I never fell to the ground, got up delayed the fight for a minute or two from just a brush of the cup.I mean my god man I was punched in the balls not touched.
Bernard talks probably the best fight in the world but when it comes to he always reverts back to 1 punch and hold,1 punch and hold.At the end of the night he didn't get dazed or knocked down and he will always say he won the fight.Hopkins is a crafty old man but get serious Joe threw more landed more and was always on the attack.Get past the so called "defensive geniusness"(if that's a word) and watch the fight.
Why on earth would Calzaghe fans think he lost. He ticked all the boxes for a points victory. He threw more punches than his opponent, he landed more punches than his opponent, he was more aggressive, he was the victim of being tied up in clinches almost exclusively, he didn't tire down the stretch and become lazier as Hopkins did.
The only thing that kept Hopkins in the fight was one good punch in the first round giving him an early advantage. To be honest, you're not putting forward any facts to back up your statements, so quite clearly you're the one who believes deep down that his boy lost. And everybody else don't have to go deep down to believe it.
....well if we scored the fight your way Pernell Whittaker would never have won a single fight
Most likely.Remember this all started over two guys fighting in a street somewhere. The sport of boxing that is.Take out all the mumbo jumbo point shit and just see who throws more and who lands more and usually that's your man.People may laugh but look at it this guy didn't seriously hurt Hopkins but he sure as hell went after him didn't he,he did throw alot of "pitty pat" shit and what did Hopkins do cover up and shoot 1 punch at a time and hold. It's clear as day who is holding,Joe is throwing and Hopkins is clinching.Even when Hopkins waived his arms in the 11th I believe he threw 2 shots and held on to Joe.
Calzaghe won the fight.I had it nip & tuck but Calzaghe was coming on later when Hopkins fell into the Damn wait around mode late.Just the way I saw it,period.
By no means was it the trouncing and over whelming of Hopkins some were predicting though.Respect is due both fighters!
Hopkins loses fights by being lazy and giving away rounds...he lost to Taylor that way and he lost to Calzaghe that way
Whittiker never left the Parish to avoid the Punch he wasnt a Bottle job.
all i will say is I had it even - but damn those rounds were hard to score
had one man nicked it 114-1113 on the deciding score then fair enough
thought 116-111 was a bit off the mark mind
Very very hard to score, especially rounds 3 & 4. Hopkins did better than I thought he would, but it would be very hard to make a case for him winning with his work rate and punches thrown. I had it 115-112 for Calzaghe, but would not argue with 114-113.
Round 1 Hopkins 10-8
Round 2 Hopkins 10-9
Round 3 Hopkins 10-9 Could have gone either way imo
Round 4 Calzaghe 10-9 Could have gone either way imo
Round 5 Calzaghe 10-9
Round 6 Calzaghe 10-9
Round 7 Calzaghe 10-9
Round 8 Calzaghe 10-9
Round 9 Calzaghe 10-9
Round 10 Hopkins 10-9 Could have gone either way imo
Round 11 Calzaghe 10-9
Round 12 Calzaghe 10-9
I had it 7-5 Calzaghe, one point win with the knockdown. The most I could see Calzaghe winning by is 2-3 points because of pure work rate.
Yes. Plus it definitely slowed Calzaghe for the first three rounds, he didn't really get going till round four. But that makes his victory all the more great. Making your Vegas debut, getting knocked down in the first minute of the first round, then getting butted fouled and cheated for twelve rounds and a biased referee and Calzaghe still won.
