are you flat on your feet??? are you stepping to the side or back or not at all
i would have to see the mechanics of your approach
what i can say is stay on your TOES... flat feet can leave you on a flat back
I just asked my trainer the same question this week. He said the trick is to move gradually move forward as you go through the combination because when you're at an appropriate range to jab you're not in close enough range to execute a hook properly. So you inch forward as you go. It's tough, I'm still trying to get it down.

slow the combo down and don't over commit. (just yet ;) )
As you get more comfortable speed it up also remember that when you go to try this combination you can choose with punch carries most weight behind it.
What I mean is this. Shadow box the combo. Now on the bag. Keep all the punches fast but light, now all heavy.
Hard jab, light right , light hook etc.
Light jab Hard right, light hook etc
Light jab, light right Hard Hook etc.
You can choose which punch to bomb with.
You've probably seen the pro's load up with a punch that misses and they spin round - probably take your head off if it landed but overcommited.
Generally, is only one of the punches Hard while the other two are light? Could one be light and two hard...?
sure you can but the idea is to get control of your body.
You could working a set combo on the pads and have your trainer call out light or hard shots.
We used to go from 1 to 10 with the jab increasing the power. Your pad man calls 5 you hit with that strength.
this may be hard to conceptualize but try to feel your momentum and learn to control it an flow with it... feel where your at, you want to learn what you can throw at different places... punching at different speeds and intnsities will change your combo... so the same combo can be thrown with different intentions...

You can shuffle forwards with the front foot going heel to toe with the back one sliding into position as you sit on a punch combo for more finishing power but its a stilted move that has you set into a certain timing and you have to get back onto your toes to get out of there if things swing the other way! (Good practice to combine the both but think it through first so you know when and why you do it).

You know what the most important part of a punch is?
It's what you do before and after, the punch.
If you're off balance, or slow on your feet, then you don't stand much chance.

Everyone has good points here to follow up.
It may be a simple case of your not bending at the knees enough or your over extending with out your feet coming back under you to position ; as the boys here say you may be concetrating on the arm and hook only.
The lower you get the more power you maintain into some hooks,the more stable you are also,but you are not going to get out of there fast. you have weigh up each situation and practice practice practice.

Sorry to hear that ,at least at your your young age you will repair with less permanent damage than some of us oldies would.

Are you sore in any muscles or have you got like electric type shocks that shoot through the muscles on that side sometimes?
I ask, because i got shot through the arm at work a few years ago (just into the muscle with a piece of carborundum)Â and the energy just wouldnt flow and i suffered shocks and weird feelings
through it with a feeling of weakness sometimes.
That took accupressure and massage to clear that up over a long period working it hard with my fingers alot cleared it up.
Feeling my muscles I could feel lumps in them and knots from the time i could only use a few of them ,that were now over worked and now knotted up stopping me from using them correctly.
Work them out by rubbing briskly with oils so you warm up and get the blood flowing and then put major pressure onto any knots and hold that pressure so it hurts at about a level of 7 out of 10 ,10 being unbearable pain. And hold the pressure until the level drops of to about 3 or 4 or even none if the knot is a young one. that done over time will even out muscle structure so that you can then start to build them equally without minor damages stopping them building up to original strength.
(if you do this anywhere on your body),
Squeesing lumps out and massaging :
you have to drink at least 6 medium glasses of water over the next day so that you help wash out any natural toxins /acids out of your system that you have released into your lymph system.
then days later , you feel so much freeer.
Also;
Go right over your arm top and under side,using the tip of your thumb to explore (like up and down roads) and Any sore spots that have that weird feeling of 1/2 pain /  1/2 pleasure, are probably blocked meridians.It is fixing up these that stops the odd electrical shock feeling from occuring later.
You just put pressure with your thumb into them sore spots and revolve down slowly but firmly and work them out . This done over a time will balance energy flow to other areas too.
HAve a feel around your arm , fix yourself up, then get back to strength building.
Hey Andre thanks, my left arm wasn't the stronger when i broke it but they both were colse in strenght so that with this drop i noticed it right away. the only time it starts i get the shocks thyp things is when im working on jabs for to long. i only went to a phyisotherapist one time for it the guy stood there and asked me to show him all the movements i can do( ripped rotater cuff also) and i did every thing he asked me to do and i lifted how he told me to and everything and i don't know its still a difference i notice. like ill be dumbell benching 35lbs and the right can but it up easly 20 times and the left locks up and dosn't move and dose that shocking thing after 15or 16. but ill deffentally do that massaging and all that to see if that helps. thanks again
I'd really just suggest working on your weak arm harder than your right arm..
You may feel like your doing your right arm an injustice by not working it to it's peak capacity, but you'll feel much better when both arms are back to the strength they were & then you can go all out with both arms..
Do a lot of dumbel work & say you can do 15 reps before your right arm gets sore, stop your right arm at say, 10, and continue to lift with your left arm to about 12 or 13 & so on...
The right arm will get a slight rest during this period (do it for 2 or 3 months) & you should notice your left arm catching up... Always finish your right arm reps before they get really sore, but continue on with your left arm to the point of failure.
I had the problem of one arm being a lot weaker than the other, and while your working on evening them up, you really do feel like the strength of your good arm is going to waste & it's tempting to go back and work that arm as hard as you can as well,,, but just stick it out.. it's only 2 - 3 months out of your entire life that your not working your right arm hard, so it's not the end of the world... Just stick at it, and you'll get the results you want.

[i][i]yes their is are spots were you could put your boxing bag for ex. in my back room and i hang it off a beam, and what i do to spar is i spar my bro because he is 3 years older than me and he can punch like hell and i self train my self to and what i do is 100 push ups a night 100 sit ups an 30 min jog and practice my punches on my punching bag. ;) ;) ;) ;)
Do you have a garage or car port where you could hang it? If you can save up enough you can get a bag with a stand that the bag hangs from. Or even one of those free standing bags which you could use in your damn bedroom. If you want I can send you a few links to some bags for sale online which won't require hanging up anywhere, or much space (depending on how much you want to dance around it). Speed bags can be mounted onto solid walls. Don't know if your mum would like you drilling holes into your walls though at home.. There are always ways around things though if your determined.
You can always work on the excuse to your mum that it's a hell of a lot safer letting you learn to fight and DEFEND YOURSELF in the CONTROLLED safety of a gym, compared to bully's in the real world where you could suffer a LOT more damage. It worked with my parents when I was younger.
why not say to your mum you just want to train for fitness and self-defence...you may not like it or be any good ;) - if you've spotted a club you want to go to why not ask her to come along with you?
It is hard to learn correct technique without guidance.
I too am now in the self training program. As i have said my trainer has retired due to medical reasons. Im finding it hard to train coz i have no one there to push me to go harder and faster. I have no other gym in town :(
Just for argument's sake let us say that you are really strapped and can't hang the bag or the stand may be too much for your budget, find a corner that is strong in the house or garage and get some rags or old clothes and pile them underneath or on a box so that you don't ruin a perfectly good bag or the wall and stand it up so that it doesn't fall and lesson number one, jab and switch hands so that you do not exercise one more than the other. That's right jab with both hands. On day two provided you are right handed left right and then left right left. You'll be able to punch hard and accurately considering your limited circumstances. You do understand that all this is temporary until you are able to hang the bag. Remember to shadow box and skip rope as well. You don't think that the bag is a cure all do you? Every method has it's madness and do try to get into the gym for a while so you at least know what you are to do. There is no substitution for instruction. Experience will help you be inventive during training. Above all heed everyone else's advice and learn first before you hurt yourself your bones may thank you for it.
I don't know where you live or what types of clubs are near you, but why don't you ask your Mom to at least visit a club to see what it going on. I live in the US and most of the places I have trained keep an eye on the participants to make sure no one gets hurt. Getting hurt is bad for their business. Good trainers will make sure you have a safe learning environment.

First is most likely the most important question since I'm new to boxing. I would like to start boxing hardcore and move into amateur boxing and maybe further if I'm good enough. I've been told I'm to old to start (which I'm not sure if I totally disagree) I am 21 (just turned 21 in April). I'm in good shape but would need to train a lot to be able to start. I work one job and don't go to school, so I am able to train 7 days a week. If I'm not to old to start, I'll begin reading these (and other) forums a lot to get the infomation needed to begin, and might repost here to ask a few questions if I cannot find them.

Good luck training yourself. It takes a shitload of willpower, but until you are old enough to visit a gym, self-training is a hell of a lot better than not training at all. However, if you ever wish to actually start competing in the ring, you'll need to have some experience in a boxing gym. :)Quote:

Your never too old to start, whoever told you that you were too old go shoot them!
If you have determination, discipline and desire then it doesn't matter how old you are.
Firstly, learn the basics. Every boxer - from Muhammad Ali to Mike Tyson to Roy Jones to Naseem Hamed - all learned the basics BEFORE moulding it into their own personal styles. So every boxer learns the basics first for a platform to work off, a foundation. After learning the basics, you can then use your own styles.
I was pretty immature when I was boxing because all I did really was punch the pads and punch the bag, I didn't do much else apart from punch pads and bag work because I was immature. I just worked on ragged combinations all the time and putting all my efforts into each punch, that's all I really did. I know now that this was silly.
I now know that the most important things to do are roadwork and sparring, which I didn't do enough of. You need roadwork for endurance which is crucial even in the amateurs, you need to do roadwork every day for the best effect, but also for your feet (a treadmill won't have the same effect). Try to keep a good rythm on the road, don't go ragged.
As for sparring, well this is also very, very crucial. You have to be sports specific, you can do all the bag work and pad work you like, but what improves your boxing is sparring regularly. Just remember, a bag doesn't punch back at you and neither does a bag have legs to move. At the end of the day you just have to be sports specific, would you expect a sprinter to never practice sprinting? Or would you expect a soccer player to never practice soccer? No, you wouldn't. Sparring is everything in my opinion, if you do it once a week or every other day then I don't think your keeping sharp enough, you want to spar every f***ing day! If you get hurt when sparring just carry on, do not stop. Would you stop in a boxing match if you got hurt? No. If your too lazy to get up every morning to do roadwork, then what are you going to be like when your required to get up in a boxing match while your laid out in pain?
The Kronk gym in Detroit is the most successful boxing gym ever, and Manny Steward the head of the gym always made sure that his fighters sparred every day to keep sharp. Mike Tyson in his prime used to spar every day, and he was absolutely awesome (unbeatable!), but then when he fired Kevin Rooney in 1988 he stopped sparring and looked terrible. Naseem Hamed used to spar every day before he fired Brendan Ingle in 1998, and Naz was awesome Pre-98 but awful Post-98 (because he stopped sparring). Ray Robinson is arguably the best boxer that ever lived, he sparred every day.
Do whatever it takes to get the true Bible of Boxing. It is entitled "Boxing", written in 1940, i believe, by a man named Edwin L. Haislet. It is hard to find- a book search service should work- and it may cost a bit, but no other source even comes close.

Im 11 140 pounds South pawed but can go Orthodox but better southpaw got training equipment going to start doing small weights im very strong not to quick should i hit the body or face im very resiliant how should i box should i do a Rocky Marciano go nutty just hit or do a Ali tactical please help im a new boxer i watch a lot of boxing tapes i base myself on Rocky Marciano and Balboa (i know he aint real but) But im more hit them loads of times and move then hit should i change it?
