RJJ V CALZAGHE. in works for November 15, Cardiff, Wales! ~
Yep, that's the news, that's the date and that's the site they are looking for. Roy Jones told that to ITV News
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHxWeBBHWsE
It really does not appeal to me.....but hey thats boxing!!
rather see him fight pavlik or tarver.

Re: RJJ V CALZAGHE. in works for November 15, Cardiff, Wales! ~
expecting this to be a done deal before the end of the month.
Warren isnt silly in RJJ he sees someone who can sell a fight worldwide, in cardiff he sees 70,000 tickets being sold, by staying with HBO he enables JC to still go after some big name fighters after he has disposed of RJJ.
Hope the november time frame isnt correct, RJJ will be approaching 40 and calzaghe 37, September/october is a perfectly reasonable timeframe for these 2 to not only sell the fight worldwide but also get themselves in tip top condition!!

If you don't think Roy Jones in his prime would've beaten Joe Calzaghe, you need to go and watch more of Roy Jones Jr. Calzaghe is a great fighter but honestly, how in the hell would he have beaten a prime Jones with his style. It literally couldn't have happened barring some freak acident. Joe couldn't get his respect, couldn't get into his rythym, couldn't deal with his speed, and would get potshotted to death.

Yea, he has a good chin. Other then that, about the kind of post I expected from a fanboy who can't see past a fighters nationality. How do you know he can adapt to any style? Has he fought Roy Jones clone in some underground fight somewhere? And he wasn't as fast as Roy Jones. Calzaghe has very fast hands, you could argue that he throws as many punches as quickly as Roy did, but he generates nowhere near the power and leverage Jones would get on punches that he was able to get off basically at the same speed as Joe. The difference is looking at the way they are thrown and the effect they had on people. Roy Jones could knock people clean out at SMW. Aside from of course Calzaghe, who apparently CANNOT BE Ko'ed. BUT, you forgot to consider that Roy Jones CAN'T lose to people from the UK. I mean in his entire amatuer and pro careers, he has never ONCE lost to an Englishman, not to mention a Welshman. I don't know how you could pick Calzaghe after knowing that. I didn't realize Joe hated Hip Hop though. That truly might be the X factor:rolleyes:

Re: RJJ V CALZAGHE. in works for November 15, Cardiff, Wales! ~
Hopkins was able to land when he wanted to against Calzaghe, but he didn't have the output to sway the judges. RJJ would be throwing and landing more, end of. RJJ wide UD (except this is in Joe's home turf, so anything can happen if it gets left in the hands of the judges.)

Do you mean now as opposed to prime? Seeing as you like compiling odds - how would you price it up?

I wouldn't have this out of the park odds, but I would have the following
RJJ = -200 = 1/2
Calzaghe = +175 = 7/4
I would move these as I see training sessions etc.
As for prime I would have had
RJJ = -500 = 1/5
Calzaghe = +400 = 4/1
somewhere in that neighborhood.

calm down,stop taking it all so personal,and i never realised he fought a load of people from the uk,,lol!
this prime for prime shit is bullshit,theres only a couple of years between them,anthony hanshaw ring any bells,joe beats the top dogs in the SMW and LHW,and jones beasts up a welterweight(tito)
and tarver and johnson never found him such a beast(quite the opposite in fact)and leave nationality out of it,,we really dont want to go down that route at the minute do we,lol!

I agree with your prime odds.
But the current odds, should the fight happen, will most certainly be the OPPOSITE of how you have it.
I think Roy will be worth a bet as underdog.

You could certainly make a case for making the odds opposite, however, what I'm looking at now is this the biggest guy calzaghe will have ever faced, and has the ability to land inside Joe's flurries, that's how I see it.
I know most of the UK bookies have it
Joe = -350 = 2/7
RJJ = +250 = 5/2
I gotta call it as I see it though. The big question here is can Joe fight going backwards, no way he pushes back Jones.
-
Re: RJJ V CALZAGHE. in works for November 15, Cardiff, Wales! ~
Anyway amoungst all the Bullshit, I for one am excited about this fight and see it being very competitive now, but a landslide for Jones back in the day
-
Re: RJJ V CALZAGHE. in works for November 15, Cardiff, Wales! ~
The real difference, prime for prime, is that Jones had real power. He was KOing very good quality LHW's where as Calzaghe only stops average fighters and wins decisions against his toughest challenges. That doesn't mean Joe isn't a great fighter, but it would have cost him in a fight with prime Jones. Even though I think Joe matches with his handspeed and is a more adaptable fighter, the extra power and better counterpunching of Jones would have carried him.
Now, I gotta give the edge to Calzaghe, but 8 years ago, no way.

Remember the same thing being said when hopkins and trinidad fought eachother. Styles can be very deceiving.
If the 2 boxed eachother tommorow:
Calzaghe by UD
If the 2 boxed eachother 6-7 years ago:
Jones jr by late stoppage
if the 2 boxed eachother each in their absoloute prime:
Id have to say RJJ by a split decision

Hopkins and Trinidad could both punch though, and Hopkins was the bigger man. Roy could punch with the best of them in his prime, now he can still crack a little, and is still the bigger man. Joe Calzaghe, if he ever had any real power, only did so in the very beginning of his career and hasn't shown it in years. It's not as though Joe could surprise everyone and adopt the role of a power puncher vs Jones. He can't punch, not about to change. It's not out of the question he could hurt Roy, but that would involve Jones growing even older and having much less than he showed even against Tito imo, for Joe to actually do damage with individual shots.
-
Re: RJJ V CALZAGHE. in works for November 15, Cardiff, Wales! ~
This fight today does not hold any interest to me whatsoever, its a way by the both of em to make a crapload of cash. Cal has probably 1 or 2 good fights left in him and fighting todays roy and beating him does not do much for him I think, how did roy beat tito and all of a sudden is considered so good again. I'm pretty sure calzaghe will basically outwork roy and make it look better than he did against bhop. Roy and cal hit their primes at different times and in their primes roy would have took a ud I think,but there is no way that roy would just walk through calzaghe, because nobody walks through calzaghe, you can say calzaghe has never faced anyone like roy, then again roy has never really faced anyone just like calzaghe.

Calzaghe has to be an underdog in this matchup, even with jones at 40.

Roy Jones Jr Vs. Joe Calzaghe??
TOPICS MERGED - BIG H
OK, I am hearing through the grapevine that Calzaghe's next fight will be against Roy Jones Jr. Now, after watching the fight the other night, does anyone on this forum think that Calzaghe can beat Jones? Yes, I know that Jones isn't what he was 10 years ago, but I believe that he will absolutely destroy Calzaghe. Calzaghe has no punching power what so ever, so Roy wouldn't have to respect him at all. I believe that this matchup would result in Roy getting his first knockout in a while...............What are everyone's thoughts?? I'd say Jones in a KO within 6 rounds.
-
Re: Roy Jones Jr Vs. Joe Calzaghe??
I agree with some of what you say. Calzaghe does have a great chin, that is without question, a 6th round KO is a stretch IMO. I do think Jones will be able to impose his will and hurt Calzaghe, but that would be late in the fight after 10 rounds of dancing and playing with him.
The other thing here is that the judges will definately be favoring Joe, I think Jones will have to beat Joe as bad as he beat Lacy or KHTFO to get a W.

Joe will be favourite because he has been more active and against a better level of opponent but Roy does look good again and I will be rooting for him, but no way will he stop Joe in 6 rounds, a prime Roy Jones would struggle doing that.
