I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
I have always been a fan of Chris...a small HW that found a way to win....Yes I know many people were turned off with his defensive style but lets face it Chris was in when all the top guys were huge...it is just more recently that all the HWTS are starting to get back t a bit of a normal size...6'1"-6'3" 220-240lbs......
Everyone would say how good Byrd would have been as a CW but I think he would have been a great LHW as well....Last I seen he looked ripped as hell....I know he is 37 but he is a young 37 and falls into the Johnson category as a guy who has some miles left in him....
I hope he makes some noise....anyone else looking forward to this or am I alone here?

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
I'm looking forward to it as well. To my knowledge it will be the first time in history that a fighter having been an established heavyweight world champ, at one point the longest currently reigning, has moved down two divisions to fight at a lower weight.
(Roy Jones doesnt count as he was never a heavy to begin with)
In fact I can't think of a single fighter in any weight class who spent their career in one division, winning world titles and then moved down to divisions.
Has this ever happened before?

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
....I wish he would have done this a long time ago. Byrd was a good heavyweight but he tried to fight the big guys and he just couldn't handle them.
I would have liked Byrd to have fought: Sultan, Chagaev, and even Mesi.
I wonder about Byrd's power though, I am wondering if it will suffer with the weight loss as well as his speed...Byrd never punched hard for a heavyweight but he SHOULD punch hard for a light heavyweight

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
Chris has one of the biggest hearts in boxing to give away all that height and weight and still be world champ and one of the best is a massive credit to himself. I wish he had made the move a few years ago but I would like to see him succeed the LH Division, shame it is full of Golden Oldies already barring Dawson

I pick Byrd over both Sultan and Chagaev personally....I don' think Chris ever lost a fight he was not out gunned in...I don't really know what happened to him in the Povetkin fight....I did not see it....But look at the other guys he lost to..
Wlad twice and Ike...both massively stronger then he was...Ike outweighed him by like 35lbs and Klitschko is a monstor....so no shame in it....

Agreed it would have been nice to see this 7 or 8 years ago...Chris is a guy with massive heart

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
Its almost like coming full circle for Byrd...From Spr Middle to Heavy and back down.Ive come to respect Byrd....after thinking him a fleet of foot/small heart type fighter. He called out everyone,risk/reward ratio too steep for some but He succedded in a world of doubts......for the most part.I think age/speed will be a HUGE factor,He could look slick and fluid with most big heavys but top guys meeting him at Lt Heavy like size & speed will catch up to him Imo.Much hindsight Career respect to Chris but you can shed all the weight, but you can not get back those years.Dude has heart and focus..give em that.

I must admit that i was very happy to see I.Ibeabuchi starch Byrd. Byrd was so full of himself at the time and needed to be put in check.

Waaay Back, Boxed out in the first round and If I remember King Arthur came through with a straight Right with seconds left in the round. Byrd went flat on his back, stunned & badly hurt and was led back to corner. He came through ultimatley but if only for the bell Lol.

Wow! I don't remember that at all. thanks for the info.
I gotta give it toByrd though...the guy has a big heart, too bad he didn't have the natural size to go with it.

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
I was never big on Byrd. When he fought Darryl Williamson I was like fukk Chris Bryd. I don't give a fukk if he's at Light Heavyweight. Now if he fought Calzaghe and knocked him out than I'll be a Byrd fan. But as of right now, fukk Byrd

I noticed him. Especially the California in his location. He's already in my good graces. Plus he's been around since 2005. Your more of a newbie than him

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
If Chris had gradually built up to HW by winning titles at SMW/LHW/CW before going for the HW title we might be referring to him as one of the best fighters of his generation. I personally don't care for him, but he trains hard is a handfull for anyone and brings it every night. A fight between him and RJJ several years ago would have been interesting. Maybe not dynamite but a real technical show

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
I hope he has a few good performances and then hangs them up. I am not a big fan, but have a ton of respect for him. I also seen him as a commentator and he did very well. He's well spoken and obviously knows boxing.
I think he will put a beating on Tarver...... And I want to see it.

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
It will be very interesting for almost any boxing fan like him or not to see how he does in this division. My main question is at this lighter weight will his wife be any less loud ??

Re: I know I am alone in this but I can't help be ecxcited to see byrd at LH...
I'm definately excited to see Byrd at LHW. He should be a more exciting fighter at that weight. Against the big guys, he had to be super cautious, and he didn't have the power to hurt anybody. I can't disagree that the Williamson fight was one of the most painful fights to watch ever.
He's a skilled guy, and I'm curious to see him apply that in fights where he is naturally the same sized or bigger. He has the chance to be a real force in the division.

Shaun isn't a world beater but he is a decent fighter, he will be a decent opener for Byrd, if Byrd isn't up to the task he could be in trouble, but he should win reasonably easily on the cards or by late stoppage
