Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Hi I am Deaf and communicate by ASL ( American Sign Language ). I am tired of being physically abused by cruel bullies. I am a 29 years old man and never really had to fight and there is a burning fire to learn now. I am fed up and angry. I am not in the best shape. Almost no excersice and I stand 5'8 and weigh 280 lbs. I live in the country in a small town with no boxing gym and plan to move to the big city as soon as possible to live with the Deaf community. I want to be strong as much as possible and capable of defending myself if I go home to visit my mom on Thanksgiving or Christmas or during the summer time. I do not have alots of money. I looked at some calithensics and remembered my high school gym training... how can I get started without hurting my back? I have a fat stomach so I am walking jogging and running when I can because I can not do a situp that is how bad and embarrassing it is with my shirt riding up exposing my fat stomach for all people to see and it makes me angry that the kids make fun of my stomach and the girls do not take a 2nd look at me and the guys try to punch my stomach and make fun of me... I am fed up and taking charge now and to become at least physically fit when I move to the big city and go to the boxing gym where the boxing coach will have more of an easier time training me please? I do not want to injure myself in the process of getting physically fit. Thank you and God Bless, Deafman

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
dont let any one mess with you . I wont go into details on that :P anyways i have been heavy with a big stomach myself once and i wanted to avoid working out... my suggestion is find urself motivated enough and u cant stop go true with it ... try to find a 5km jogging range witch you will jogg 5 times a week for about 3 months. after that you will be skinnier and if u want to build up muscels or whatever you go to the gym its gona be easier to start skiny to work out to build at least it was for me :>(at the begining u wont make the 5km i dident but just try as utch as you can in about 4 times jogging you willl have pimroved 4x and will be able to do it if u do your best :P

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
what ya gotta do is start by takin it slowly and build up ur trainin regime once u feel capale of doin say a longer run or more push ups etc, obviously a healthy diet is important so cut back on any of the shit u might eat, jog, skip, run, star jumps, will really help and perhaps do some weights again start of fairly reasonable, you dont want to injure yourself once youve started ul soon find that u can do sit ups noy many at first.
all youve got too do is take your time and eat healthily, dont let them get to u, lifes to short.
good luck and keep us updated xxx

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
80% of loosingweight is in what you eat..So eat a high protein diet like tuna, chicken, turkey , samon, etc. The good carbs like vegetables,a nd fruit, and oatmeal..Stayaway from the breads, rice, and pasta. EAt smallmeals but 6 or 7 of them..Every two or 3 hours..this increases your metabolism...Do some reasersaswell to find out more....I also suggest you geta physical to rule out any medical reasons thast might be stoping you from loosing the weight.
I've seen 600 pound people loose like 400 pounds! You can deffinitely do it if you put your mind to it. It will take a while, but keep your eyes on the goal..Of course exercise will help too. Fast walking is great too untill you can build yourself up to jogging..
Good luck to you..

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
First off, good for you for taking charge of your life. People don't realise how hard it can be if you are big to go to a gym because of they are often treated.
Deafman, take it easy to begin with. Walking is a great place to start and doesn't put as much stress on your joints as running would do. Build up to speed walking 60 minutes a day.
Are there any martial arts classes in your town? this may be a useful alternative to boxing for now.
If you feel fit enough you can start to jog-slowly, if it hurts -go back to walking.
If there is a gym with weights I strongly recommend going. Weights can really alter your shape, and the instructor wil be able to tailor a programme that will help your back.
You know what you need to do.
Cut out the junk food.
Increase your aerobic exercise
Pick up the weights.

Even when ive been fit i have never been able to jog coz i have bad joints in my ankles. So i stick to walking about 6 kms a day and i do some bike riding.

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
well my man you seem to be in a real bitch of a situation
there are a couple of things you might want to know before we start.
im 17 years old. when i was 10 i was clinically obese, standing at 5ft 3 and weighing 230lb. i was the kind of kid that you would see on tv on the shows. i had to go and see a doctor and with hard hard excersize and help i got down to 170lb within the same of around 5 years.
slow change, maybe, but i was a kid who loved to eat, i was never really on top of my diet, i used to eat and eat. even though i so desperately wanted to be thin i couldnt resist eating when my parents werent looking. when my dad died, i made an oath with myself that i would do everything i could to get better. and i did
im now 5ft 11 and i weight 200 , and im not fat atall, you can even start to see abs.
i started to keep a monthly photo journal of me, to see if i had made a difference that month. i started getting obsessive with it all. i stopped these at the age of 15 cause i got depressed if i diddnt make a gain, but i still have all the pictures, ill send you the last one i took (bearing in mind the cheezy haircut that was cool back then, and the fat that i had never been near a weight in my life)

if you really sick of all this, and realy determined then i have help for you, cause i have had to go through the same thing.
what you got to do is put your pride on the shelf and do everything in your power to lose that weight, and i have just the ticket.

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Deafman you will have special gifts mate.
Maybe your sight or reaction to sight could surpass  ours ?In that case you  would be able to see a punch comming easier.
Watch the centre of people and keep their knees and elbows in your perifial vision so you can see their intention prior to movment and stay out of foot and arms reach so they have to step into you to get contact ,so you have made time to react.
I had a mate who was born deaf and he was the strongest dude we all knew when he got going (everyone feared him ,but he didnt realize it).
I have a deaf freind now and she is the glue that cements together some people who wouldnt normally come together in this life.
She has a humor towards her disposition that shows through and melts away peoples fears.
You  do the same mate,I see you have humor through your avatar name , smile and enjoy every moment your given and those people who taunt or throw pretend jabs at you will give up because your  unattached reaction wont be what they were looking for.
I think many of your natural gut intincts will give you a definate edge over the other minor few who want to get physical .
Hows your balance is it effected?

that's fine, not saying you have to jog - it's just often the most readily available & cheapest exercise, not everyone can afford a decent bike/gym membership but most of us can put on some running shoes and hit the road.
I've got dodgy knees through martial arts so I mix it up, if people push themselves swimming is a great exercise, as is the cross trainer.
Alex - great post. ;)

So you dont need to do roadwork? So its fine to do some other exercise like riding a bike or something? Im just wondering coz a lot of ppl are always telling me that if i want to have a go in the amateurs then i need to do roadwork but you know i cant. I dont know if i fucked my ankles doing karate or something but they just seem to hurt when i jog.

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Yeah good on you Alex and great posts from everyone cc's all round!
Hey do you know that by imagining a large X out in front of your eyes just prior to doing any activity ativates both sides of your brain so you have a more balanced out reaction time left and right hemishphere.

How about slow less impacting deep sand work.
And then water work too.
then skipping on a trampoline.

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
i was gonna suggest swimming, but its hard.
i am a good swimmer now, but back then i was embarresed to go near the pool because of how i looked.
thats why i said you need to out your pride on the shelf

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
the thing with using a bike is that you have to work much harder to get your heart going, to mimic running you would need to work whole body like on a cross trainer or swimming hard, and you must do sprint work.
If you have a proper running track close by you could try their, depending on how bad your joints are because they are spongy.
remember when Hamed saisd he didn't do roadwork, spar for fitness. he may have been BS'ing but I found sparring harder than jogging.
Anyway-Deafman, I hope we've provided you with some ideas! ;)

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Hi Thank you to all of you who were able to help and give feedback and post a few pictures on what your experience was and I am taking notes and I think I will try riding a bike swimming and anything that will not hurt my back or my knees or ankles because I am heavy .... The one thing I have noticed when I fast no food just water. I seem to walk more lighter so I am thinking if I lose more weight through eating right and healthy and physical excersices then I could walk jog or run with no pain in my knees or ankles. I will have to talk to my doctor and see what he has to say but I am healthy and never really had the need for a doctor another than being overweight. I think the key to all of this is to lose my gut and get alots of excess weight off my knees and ankles as well as through out my body. Does a total body workout make good sense because it seems to make sense. I just know that when I get mad and want to fight it takes alots of people to hold me down and the cops warned the bad guys to stay away from me because the last time they did that the cops had to keep me down about 15 cops tried to restrain me and they did not realize how so strong I was and I did not realize that either until I read the post about the Deaf guy being stronger and did not realize it and I had to smile but really I do not want to be fighting I want peace with no bad guys bothering me anymore and to be more physically fit and strong but for sure I have so much anger and I could use that to work out with to become physically fit since so many people give me so many reasons to be so angry and I did not ask nor want to be an angry guy. I try to stay peaceful and stay away from people who want to be mean and cruel. I am going to have to look at some social skills classes .... that I can take on my own over the internet to become more social once I am in the city. I will have no problems making new friends but the problem is the social skills... I guess because people can talk and hear what is going on and I miss out on alots so a few social skills classes would not hurt. I am taking a 2nd look at what I eat and how to change them with the suggestions you have made. The only thing is I do not like the taste of fish so I thought I could buy a bottle of fish oil up by the vitamin section of the store. I would have to ask the store clerk to help me with the best selections. I take Once a Day Men's Vitamins ( blue bottle ). Really have to cut out the Pepsi. That is for sure. Thank you and God Bless, Deafman

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
i aint the best guy to help you on the weight thing
thoug reading your last post, about the PEPSI thing.
yeah throw it ALL away, dun even leave some incase you have some1 coming to your place,
and drink water lots of it, even more then you did with pepsi.
just water, and if soem 1 comes to visit, tell em he/she can drink water, or bring their own drinks.
and go throug some old topics here, theres alot about losing weight, and getting fit
just inmagine if you lose all that weight, what a machine you'll be O0.
all i can do is wish ya luck
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Yes the Pepsi has got to go ... and it makes sense that I used to drink Pepsi like it was " water " which is not good and now I am drinking water.... it is starting to clear up .... I can feel it in my body ... not immediately but as the water becomes my cheif source of drink I can see how it would clear up my body. I will have to start really going through the old topics when I have more time to look into it and really, I am just tired of being pushed around being abused, made fun of and being beat up etc. I would love to be a physical machine but not hurt myself in the process. I seem to notice the more muscles I put on the more faster I become ??? I want to make sure I have real speed. I know I got the power but the speed.... I need to become more faster....I have a theory .... does the more muscle that is put on that becomes wrapped around the bone structure in turn, make a man more faster? I am curious ... and would like to have real speed in addition to power and I guess footwork would mean balance right???? Thanks God Bless, Deafman
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
the musle dont bring the speed, if you punch you'll punch with "loose"muscle , and tight up your muscle just before impact (my enlish ait that good but i hope you'll understand)
when you tighten up your muscle when punching it'll slow down your punch.
but as you said you dont need to worry about your muscle mass, but focus more on your flexibility
do some light stretching and rotate your joints to get loose, and do some shadowboxing at home.
as you dont have a gym to go to. but is there some 1 you know that can help you know the basic of boxing?
if not read the learn to box section, that will get you started, and if any Q's just ask.
and keep in mind to relax when punching untill the last moment before impact.
that will bring your speed and not the muscle mass on your bones.
and balance is the biggest deal in foot work yes,
alway make sure you stay balanced, never put your feet to close togetter, cuz 1 little push, takes you to the floor, to start just stand in your boxing possition and make 1 little step with 1 leg and see what big deal it makes of the possition your head/body now is. that little step gen get you out of the way of a punch stat comes in. but just try and see for your self. and alway make sure your in balance!
i know it takes time to search this forum for a particular topic, but it is more than worth it.
and another thing, when training always give 100% other wise there will be no results.
but DONT over do it, or it will only have bad results.
alway listen to your body cuz it knows best how far you can go.

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Hi Confirm, this makes sense. The only thing is I never agreed with my high school gym teacher was that he used to deny us water when we were doing excersices. I think now that I am older and out of high school for sure. ( I never liked high school ) I am going to drink water like it is my best friend and excersice.
Please do not laugh at me as I found some good advice in the strangest of all places... the movie rental place... I was not looking for a boxing movie and I saw the movie " Girlfight " with the actress I think she is Puerto Rican .... her name is Michelle Rodriguez. That movie, I don't know why I picked it up so I sat down to watch the movie and there was alots of good advice in the movie. I am buying the DVD of the movie " Girlfight ". I think it is a good motivating boxing movie.
Are there any good motivating boxing movies ? I never really paid attention to boxing. Now I am interested although I don't think I want to compete because this really is for self defense.
I agree about working out giving 100% but sometimes it is better to go from like 40 % to 60 % to 80 % to eventually 100% as I do not want to hurt myself. If you look in the movie " Girlfight " in the scene where the girls are at the track field running and doing pull ups and she gives 100% effort while the girls complain and accuse her .... that was a real eye opener. She had to start somewhere to get to where her physical fitness shined through. I never saw the another side of it I mean I never noticed it and I wish I had noticed that and that would have been a real encouragement in the face of peresecution to become more physically fit.
I am new at this and would like to do it right the first time around. That's really my goal ... to do it right the first time around and get strong. I do not know where boxing will take me but for sure I am starting to like getting physically fit as I notice more and more of the benefits. I may have to start dressing in long sleeves and pants as I do not want the bad bullies in town to take notice that I am getting stronger, I excersice at home or in the woods until I get to the city where I can really excersice without fear of being bullied and abused again. I have always been fine in the city and never really been bothered or abused like at home, a small town where people are cruel and mean. I guess the city has always been more familiar with Deaf people than in small towns where they single out people for abuse. Sometimes I can not believe the small town people when they should know better so I will be happy to get back to the big city with a big Deaf community where I always was safe. Thanks and God Bless, Deafman

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Hey Deafman i just wanted to say congrats on getting fitter and i hope it go'se well. hopefully next time someone decides to pick on you you show them whats up :P well good luck and keep at it.
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Thank you and yes I will show them who's the boss the next time somebody tries to pick on me and yes I am gonna keep up with the physical fitness training.
I guess everybody somehow comes to boxing some because of the abuse to be stopped like me or some because they want a good name or because they want fame or some because they see boxing as a job that earns a paycheck or some just fight for the pleasure of it whatever the reason it led you to boxing in the first place I still think safety and training the proper way eating right and doing the things needed to be strong really can help you enjoy boxing and I hope that more people will give boxing a good name for example ...
I am learning boxing to protect myself from the cruel bullies and maybe win a girl over in the process.... that can give boxing a good name. You know what I mean.... I was shocked at how much people said boxing is bad for you and is no good ... I was like huh??? and became suspicious of them trying to brainwash me into not fighting to defend myself and now they are nervous... I saw someone light a cigarette real nervous and I did not want his cigarette smoke near my face then he tell me not to learn how to box.... I then knew I was on the right path.
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
i personally got into boxing for the love of fighting, but also because it was great stamine, and i see it as a potential job prospect
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
I have a question.... probably a very good question, for the sake of safety and health concerns..... I do not doubt the ability of the boxing coach to teach me how to box. When I go to the city .... how do I know if the boxing coach is certified to teach boxing ...so that I do not fall into the wrong hands and get injured during training or boxing sessions. I know there are some licensed or not so licensed boxing gyms....obivously the YMCA would be my first choice that comes to my mind but if YMCA does not have a boxing gym for that area then how do I know if the boxing coach is the real deal with certification and training. I thought that would be a good question to ask. Maybe that question does not get asked that often on the forum.
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
and remember USe any teknik that works never limit urself to one style :>
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
generally, the quickest way to see how good a gym is, is to check out their fighters. if they are good then you should be OK.
i dont know how to put this man... you seemed a little concerned about health and safety.
boxing is a full contact sport where 2 men stand in a ring and hurl punches as hard as they can at eachother. you are going to expereince pain, and you most probabely will be hurt, it happens.
if you are worried about being hurt by other people, then boxing may not be the sprt for you, and others, such as kickboxing may.
kickboxing clubs have to be liscenced, and involve less fighting and more cardio
-
Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
Maybe you misunderstood what I meant was that with the boxing coach ....and the training sessions or boxing sessions... I would want a good and responsible commonsense boxing coach .... and no I am not afraid to get hurt and want to fight....I just want to be sure I get the training from someone who knows what he is doing .... not what he thinks he knows he is doing maybe my post came across wrong but for sure .... I do want to fight I just am tired of being beat up and having people laugh .... they do not realize how angry I am. One day it will come back to bite them so hard .... One solid punch or a flurry of punches will give them a wake up call that I will not be messed around with.

no kickboxing is worse trust me :P

i am a member of a kickboxing club, i have done vale tudo and muay thai, karate, tang sou dao and ju jitsu and the harshest one i have come across is boxing
perhaps in your club they dont do what we do, but when we spar its full power, any punches for 5 rounds.
we even put the vasalene round our eyes, and have round times.
you might be new to your club, so you may be sparring technically/lightly, but once you get good youll be fighting hard every session

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
The question I am trying to ask is .... how do I know if the boxing coach is certified when I step in that boxing gym?
That was my question Thank you ... I will also have to research boxing on the internet over the weekend on this topic ... and will post the information on how to find a licensed boxing coach if you have found it please post it.
If you don't know the answer I am going to research this topic then post it here okay, some may not care about certification some may do but when I am fighting to defend myself I would want to know that person is certified and knows what he is doing training me to fight back in self defense. Thank you and God Bless, Deafman

Re: Hi Need Advice tired of being abused....
hay makes sense man
try and find a gym thats either
a) produced sucsessful pro fighters
b) is run by an ex pro
i dont think there is such a thing as a liscenced boxing instructor, but as a general rule the larger and more well known the gym, the better and more knowlegable the instructor
