I need some help from mah Saddo peoples!
Ok so here's the deal...
I work for a global software company. I currently have one of the easiest jobs on earth but it looks like my department is being fazed out. My two income house has turned into a one income house due to my girlfriend and I deciding a split was in order.
So being I can not afford a layoff(as I have no one that monitarily would be able to help me out) I figured a lateral move into a very nessesary department would be a good idea. I also found that my pay could inrease upwayds of 4 dollars per hour.
Here is where the problem lies. Last year I made over $10,000 extra due to overtime. I get all the overtime I want. I also have a carefree boss who really just lets me come in when I want, leave when I want and as long as I get my work done doesn't care. But I am in danger of in the future being laid off and having no income for a while which is unacceptable...
The new jobs that I am throwing my hat in the ring for have tough managers that will expect me to be at my dest at X time and not leave until X time. The overtime is also maybe 2 to 5 hours per week unlike my unual 8-10. I would not be in immediate danger of being laid off as they are HIRING for the job right now in the nessesary departments. And of course the pay increase... Which really only looks good on paper cuz at the end of the year with the overtime cut it will probably be pretty comperable...
So do you take the tougher job for the security or wait it out and see what happens(keep in mind I can not afford a layoff)
Thanks guys and girls

Sorry to here that... I would call the misses back;D
Seriously, I would get on Monster and CareerBuilder and have you resume on anonymous so your company cant find you and get the feelers out..
I dont know when the timer could go off for you but I would guage it on how much time you think you have left..
PS Have HitmanDonny look at you Resume, he is excellent as well as articulate, I saw a sample of his work with a coverletter he did for Von Milash;)

Your last sentance should answer your question. Why wait and risk things, you need to keep your job/income and if that means making sacrifices (in this case the sacrifice is not being able to have an easy time, actually doing the job under tough management) then you have to do that.
Sounds like a shit scenario, but if it is a must keep job then you need to do the best thing to keep it secure imo, despite the changes.
Good luck with it fella!

Thats some good advice too. Search for any other options if you couldn't stick it doing a tougher job where you are.

LOL, yeah... No, me and my girlfriend just both decided that 3 yrs of living together was enough... We're still cool, she actually works as a high paygrade recuiter for Aerotek so she'll be doing my resume but good call on Donny. I'd ask her to help but I'm not a candidate for Aerotek. She recruits for like 500k positions. As far as looking for another company... I like this one. I've been here for years an kinda like it.
Thanks JT
Re: I need some help from mah Saddo peoples!
I'm in danger of being laid off too. But I think I've save enough money to start my own business.

Yeah, thanks TB... I think I might have to pull the trigger on it and pray.

Re: I need some help from mah Saddo peoples!
Have you talked to your current boss to get a read on your departments situation, and ask him for his advice?
If you take the job in the other dept, and your current dept doesn't get fazed out, couldn't you go back to it?

Yeah, I guess I never thought about that... I mean, I wouldn't be burning any bridges although it would probably be looked at as strange...
The only people that know wouldn't tell me anyway... They're afraid of people jumping ship.

Well they probably think you're strange already, so what's the difference. ;) ;D :-*
And it's not like you're jumping ship out of the company, just to a different department. If you tell them you're situation, and tell them that you would prefer to stay in your current position, but being able to support yourself has to come first, I think they would understand, and be honest with you.
Re: I need some help from mah Saddo peoples!
ready, here is my words of wisdom.. with a great analogy of course, cause that's what i'm good for..
i worked for Blockbuster when i was 17 or so.. and always got free movies.. but when i left, i had to pay for movies and that made me sad.. but then i finally came to realize that everyone normally has to pay for movies, so really it was a luxury to get free rentals, and now i just have to do what everyone else has to do..
maybe not a great comparison in retrospect, but you get my point ;D
just know that you've been getting it easy for the past however many years, and suck it up and do what you gotta do to be safe.. I think you know that that is your answer to your problem but you just would rather take it easy at your current job.. am i right? haha

One thing is to ASK!!! Go to your manager and say something like "Hey boss, you don't think I'll be getting laid off in the near future do you?" Just casual conversation.
Sometimes lack of communication can cause a big problem. I would ask him, so I could stay with the easy job as long as I could.

Could have a point! But who would like to come out of their comfort zone if they've been in it for so long? Soon enough realisation will kick in and whats needed to be done will be done :)
Re: I need some help from mah Saddo peoples!
Move to the new department and look elsewhere at the same time. It's a tricky job market in America right now so voluntarily leaving a job/firm with nothing else to go to is nuts.
Re: I need some help from mah Saddo peoples!
Here is my take on the job thing as i've had quite a few different jobs.. Some with security, some with high pay, some with high stress, some with high responsiblity etc...
This is just for me anyway, but what I ended up going for overall was a job that I really enjoyed doing... I had been at a couple of stressful places over a few years, and it sucked.. I was being paid well and heading down a good career. I had the option to add some schooling to that and really become a higher up person in this industry.... But overall, I didn't like the industry.. I didn't like anyone I worked with, and I didn't like anyone else I had to deal with in the industry.
There were so many opportunities that it really bothered be to not want to stay there, but I had to leave...
I actually finally realised what I was looking for when I got the job I am in now, and realised I loved it.. It didn't pay as much as some of my other jobs. It wasn't quite as challenging by any means, and I didn't have nearly any of the responsiblity i've had at other jobs... BUT, there was no stress, I liked the people around, and enjoyed the entire 9 hours I spent at work...
I havn't been able to say that about any jobs so far... And coming home from work I honestly used to say to myself all the time,,, "If someone came along now and offered me a job anywhere that pays twice, maybe even 3 times as much as where I am now,,,, I would turn it down".... I've been in jobs that pay good but are stressful the whole day and it just isn't worth it in my perspective...
You have no choice but to spend 9 hours a day at work, in this society anyway.... Who the hell wants them to suck, and you come home and just want to say "fuck it all, I can't do this anymore"... No matter how much it pays...
The thing is though, the fact I loved what I was doing.. I worked harder than any job i'd been in, I put more in etc etc... And what looked like a job with no immediate opportunities,,, i'm now being recommended for manager roles after only being their 2 1/2 years.... When you love your work, you can stand out... You get the opportunity to stand out..
When you don't like your job, it's usually because their is to much work for you, or your manager doesn't care about their staff, and you really have no opportunity to stand out... You might get lucky and get a promotion... But where I am now, just the fact that you can come home and say "I love my job"... It is the most free feeling you can have...
It gives you more energy after work.. Hell if you wanted to make more money, then all the big people say "It's not what you do during work hours that makes you rich, it's what you do after you go home that seperate the have's from the have not's"
So anyway that's my take on things... It possibly doesn't relate to your options at the moment.... But once I learnt the value of really being happy at your work, even after 9 hours each day,,,,, It's worth more than money... And in fact, money ends up coming a lot easier when your happy and enjoy your work...
Re: I need some help from mah Saddo peoples!
On your specific case though... I honestly like the sound of your job now... It seems as though there isn't to much job security where you are now...
But it's almost impossible to say what the situation might be at the new place as well... At some of the companies i've been at, many many times over they have hired for positions that were mundane in 4 months and the person was left without a position. Other times people have taken a position genuinally thinking it was right for them, and then realising the security was great until the realised their boss was a complete asshole, and being out of work for 2 months would actually be less stressful than having to work at such a place...
It's a hard choice with jobs, and I think a whole lot of where you end up is luck. And whether a place is really right for you is luck as well..
If I was you, it sounds like you are happy where you are...
- I would make sure that you have a resume and all your documents up to date incase you are put out of work and you are immediately ready to apply for new positions.... If you are really commited and work just as hard at getting a job as you would IN a job, you can get one pretty fast.
- Get some really great references written from your employer and collegue's that you work with at the moment..
- Try to organise some spare money into a savings that will hold you at bare minimum until you get another job..
Basically you may not be able to control what happens with your job position right now, but as far as 'security' goes, try to do some of the above things and have yourself 100% prepared for possibly being out of work and looking for something new,,, and in a way, that is a type of security that might make you feel better about your current situation...
Biggest thing,,,, Make the most of what you have when you have it.... You've got a great position at the moment, and you know that it might not be for ever,,,, so don't waste money and really work at making the most of every cent you get while it is still coming easily for you..
