Mayweather ducks and he gets commended

I will never get this era of boxing. Many people always defended his lack of opposition because they said it was the best money out there. OKAY? That doesn't sound like a boxer's legitimate excuse. Now Mayweather retires and avoids an open discussion for Cotto or Margarito fight after their battle on July 26th. And some have called him genius and almost all assume "he's waiting for them... to cash in to more money." WHAT?

What's all this defending about?

Floyd reminds me of the cousin that everybody likes and defends, but never shows up to the familiy weddings or visits his family.

He hasnt been perfect has he.. There are a few things that people will always question or hate about mayweather.. But for now i dont know what'l happen with the dude..

Maybe he'll have been bullshitting and come back to fight the cotto/marg winner.. Maybe he wont..

Im just waiting to see.. Bloody hope he does though..

The man so called " retires" for what the third or fourth time and the news runs through the sports world like obama just got shot. Some hate him some love him but give him some credit, what other fighter could get this much attention and press from a retirement most don't even belive let alone a real one. If he got this popular, this rich, held that many belts so on and so forth by being this big looser he invites us all to portay him then he worked us the fans and the sport of boxing over big time. Either way him sitting where he sits right now and us sitting where we do it's hard for me to see where he comes out on the loosing end. His fake retirements draw up more attention the most fighters actual fights. Reguardless of how it happened he's wound up undefeated, multi-title holder and ranked pfp best by the sport itself. Don't really see where he's went wrong. Boxers have taken way worse ass-whoopins for so so much less. He didn't always fight who we wanted him to..but we always paid to watch him all the same. I actually like the division better without him, and all the distractions. Time for a fresh look instead of everybody always judging everything by what floyd does or doesn't do.

I only really care about the most attractive fights per division.

Cotto-Margarito will be a FAR more exciting fight than Floyd vs either will EVER be in a million years.

That's my take ;)

I think people can certainly rip floyds later years but they really cannot fault his business at super feather and lightweight..

I wrote this the other day in a thread topic of retirement., so I'm going to repost it. Last time, I promise. I didn't write it in regards to Mayweather, but in boxers retiring in general.

Regarding Retirement

I think a fighter does owe something to his fans. To boxing fans in general. If he is driving a fancy car, parks it in a big garage and in a big house, who do you think helped make that happen?

When the issue gets brought into the topic of retirement, the line often becomes blurred, because as boxing fans it is hard to discern when is enough.

It is a tricky blend for the successful boxer to have both satisfied the fans and made his mark on the boxing world to the best of his ability, and being able to walk away gracefully. Why? Well, that is when it gets put back on us, the fan, and not so much the fighter. We ultimately will decide how we remember that person, their last fight, their last 4 fights, their beginning, and eventually their entire career. In this sport, one fight, on one night, can drastically change our perception. So we factor all of that in with the many other variables, how they conduct themselves etc, and we somehow need to ask ourselves, has it been enough? Am I okay with them saying, "Thanks fans, it's been great but I need to call it a day."

And so we count on the fighter making a decision that most of us will be okay with. Then if we can look at it objectively and honestly we won't ask more from our heros then what we are due. Then hopefully most of us will respect their decision.

This certainly isn't going to happen all the time, simply too many variables. But it is a thing of beauty when it does happen. And it is a big part I believe of why we are here, and we cheer our heros, and we argue, about who's better and why, and their legacies. We are all ultimately trying to sort it out for the history of our fighters, and the history of our sport.

That's my take on it, anyway.

I think he's very clever and manipulative. He knows everyone's talking about his retirement and once Cotto and Tony have fought everyone will be screaming for him to fight the winner and the fight will generate so much money for Floyd that he will have to take it. That's clever buisness sense.

Didn't you know, it's only now become a business, and fighters always fought the best throughout time regardless of the money involved.

Like Jack Johnson during his HW reign. Boy, he sure fought every worthwhile challenger regardless of the skin-color and the money fighting guys of certain skin color would mean. Jack Dempsey, boy he sure kept active as a HW champ rather than taking part in well-paid exhibitions.

Ray Robinson never cared about money, he never said "I'm too pretty to fight Charley Burley" or fought for every last dollar. He never admitted "boxing is a business and I never enjoyed it". Could you imagine him trying to be a tap dancer and a singer? No way!

All the fighters of the past took on the most deserving challengers regardless of monetary value.

Archie Moore, Charley Burley, Ezzard Charles, Harry Wills, Joe Jeannette, Sam McVae, Sam Langford, Holman Williams, Lloyd Marshall.

They ALL got their deserved shots at the big time at the right time, because all the fighters and promoters knew that merit was more important than money!!

Damn this modern era where it's all about money. Let's go back to the honest 1950s with Jim Norris and Frankie Carbo! It was a true sport then, not a business!

That way I see it, I feel like all of us (boxing fans) would just say something around the lines of "I KNEW IT!" To a casual boxing fan (I KNOW A LOT OF THESE PEOPLE), they are the first ones to say "OH MY GOD! HE CAME OUT OF RETIREMENT!" Those are the people that need persuading to really get into boxing. Surely that all depend on the level of fighter around during that era.

Techniques within boxing have drastically changed over the last 20-30 years and i very much doubt they`ll be altered too much over the coming generations which should give us an accurate judgement as to which era was the best.

Fighters of 60-70s used to rarely pay much attention to the economics of fighting on the back foot and most contests were just seen as out and ou fights.

I cant imagine what the likes of jake la motta, SRR and joe louis would of made of fighters like PBF, B-Hop etc

You are obviously not as boxing savvy as me to know the difference between a great fighter and a guy who is made to look great. I already warned you that if you can't handle the truth you shouldn't read my posts anymore. It is what it is.

Easiest most vulnerable opponents for years now. How can that be explained?

Again, I don't have no problem if he's just trying to make the most money he can but he's not living up to P4P responsibility, period. He talks about him being the money man or whatever but DLH and Hatton were the real sellers of those fights wether you can handle it or not.

Why do you thing he doesn't want to fight anyone else these days? Because he knows that his true PPV drawing power would be exposed badly and he would be actually taking a risk of losing in the process. That's why.

The only reason I can think of that just about every site had him atop the P4P rankings is because of the hype and they were all afraid to be the first to take off the top spot and be ridiculed by other sites. You can clearly tell how they really felt because they were hinting on the articles all the time.

I just wish one of them would have been brave enough lead and give the credit to the real fighters that are involved in the real fights.

I agree some of your post. The rest I have some issues with. I am in agreement that he "is made to look to be great". But make no mistake. He is P4P #1... Pac is a CLOSE second. To say that DelaHoya and Hatton were not "real" fights is crazy. The public wanted those fights and got them. I am not a Mayweather fan by any way, shape or form but don't get it twisted... He IS P4P #1...

That being said, there are many people on this site and others that have Pac as #1. No one can argue with that. Pac has paid his dues in full. I'ts just really where you choose to place them. Anyone could put forth a great argument that Pac deserves #1 and they wouldn't be wrong.

P4P is a hypothetical list and I've even heard decent arguments about Joe C at #1... Do I think he is? Hell no. But that's not my list. I have him at 3.

I hear your points for sure but the thing is that although I personally think Joe C is the #1 fighter in the world, by resume alone you have to go with Pac regardless of how good floyd looks against the guys he fights.

Reason being is that DLH is far from the fighter he once was and he was inactive for awhile before the fight and Hatton was knocked back into the JWW division by light punching Collazo. Hatton also comes in often with his hands too low so it was only a matter of time. That doesn't say all that much to me.

Pac has been fighting the best of his division and that's where you see what a guy is really made of. It's not that difficult for top tier fighters like floyd to look like gods against that level of competition.

That's my view.
