Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
Periodically on this board a thread emerges which enquires as to what boxers you have met.
In this thread I'm just asking if you've met any boxer whom you disliked because they were dismissive, had a poor personality or who didn't make any effort to socuialise with their fans.
-
Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
Good topic. But I can't say I personally met any dickhead snob boxers.

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
...met roy jones last year, and have to kinda be in the middle, he seemed like a real dick to everyone at the time, but he also looked real pre-occupied and busy. A lot of peple mentioed the same thing though.

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
i met joe frazier and shook his hand then he turned away and kept going as if i didnt even exist. well maybe he was busy. nah no way he just left me there standing like a fool. anyways still like smoking joe.
-
Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
Aw c'mon, give Joe a break. You didn't meet all of him. He left a part back in the late 70s.

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
I'd like to use this thread to state the opposite. I met Floyd Mayweather last year. He actually is a VERY nice guy. And just because it was a media thing. It was at the Detroit leg of the "The World Awaits" promo and he stayed after it was over just talking to fans and putting his hands on people. There was a Mexican kid who walked up with a glove Oscar had already signed and asked him to sign it. At first he said he couldn't because Oscar's signature was on it and when the kid said he didn't have another one he signed it for him. He's got great caps too.

lol that is funny.
I can see it too. "Yea, so mate, yea...I was thinking, Wlad and me should be getting it on, I mean, c'mon, just fight me already Wlad."
"Okay David, that's awesome...but I need to go."
"Yea, me and Wlad, toe to toe mate...what you think? Should happen eh!"
"For sure David, but seriously, I really need to go."
"Wlad and me, I can see it now. What you think mate? Yea...won't be long mate. Have you seen him anywhere? I was thinking that..."

I heard Roy is real cool normaly.
I know a lot of people who seen him at the calzaghe/hopkins fight, he spent a lot of time with the welsh fans having his picture etc...
It is a bit sad realy for some fans, because no matter whom you are, you are going to have a bad day, and it is real sad you could meet someone you idolise or, someone you just liked a lot and get a bad impression of them because they were just in a bad way at that time.
But as for roy he is meant to be a sound cat

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
Jeff Harding is probably the most famous. Years ago not long after his success he used to drink a lot and I would often see him in the same pubs me and a mate would go to. You could tell people were taking advantage of him and it was quite sad as he obviously had a problem. He was in the kind of state most of the time where it was best just to avoid eye contact. More recently though he's been in this part of the world after getting his act together and stopping the drinking etc and had a chance to spend some time with him. He's a nice guy and we mainly spoke about our kids and that kind of thing but he was happy to talk about some of the old fight stories as well. Met big Bob Mirovic briefly and he was happy to say g'day and have his photo taken, unfortunately my mate who took kthe pic with my phone messed it up and it's so fuzzy no one believes it's him anyway, or even me for that matter. A local pro fighter Chad "Hollywood" Bennett is often in our building and at events. He's nice enough to chat to in the lift etc but is a dick when on the piss, but i think he knows that and even his friends (apparently) tell him that. Well thats it from me........

Over the years I have met many many fighters most were nice guys. The only guy I didnt like was Riddick Bowe. Several of us were collecting autographs and pics of fighters for a young guy in a hospice inFla. I asked Bowe to sign the fight cardfor him, Bowe was a guest of honor at the black tie fights in Dallas. He just dropped the pen I handed him and held his hand out.
"I dont sign for less than $10 for nobody " he said. That p'd me off right there I told him in no uncertain terms what he could do with his $ 10 autograph he just walked away

Wow that's not very classy at all. You're lucky he just walked away I guess after you gave him a mouthful. A funny, not boxing related story - an old acquaintance of mine bought a beer for a rugby league player years ago - he was a front row forward, a big fella (Think line backer you yanks) Kerry Hemsley - for those who know. He spoke to him for a bit and offered to buy him a beer, asked what he wanted brought him back a middy of the brew and handed it to him, it dropped straight through his hand and smashed on the ground to which he apparently said "Only fit's schooners mate". ;D

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
Most are good people that I met. We must remember that sometimes it's matter of timing, they are human and one day they might blow someone off and another they'd go out of their way to help you. With that being said I do admit meeting Tyrell Biggs before he fought Tyson and he was very rude. It was a day where I had met many fighters and each of them were as nice as the other, but one! I felt no sadness when Biggs fought Tyson after that!

Donny this is as close as Im coming to touching this topic(buisness is buisness)
My mother in law,has met Larry Holmes and waited on him,and says he's very nice

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
I've met the Mayweather's and some other GR boxers.
Floyd a few times, he is real laid back. But when he meets people you can tell he really makes an effort to smile and looks you right in the eyes. He's the type of person who really makes an effort to listen to what is being said to him, even if its a complete stranger. He used to always be up at Pride when he was younger.
Floyd Sr. is a cocky asshole. I've met him twice, once at Denny's late at night. My friend knew him and we went over and said hi. Floyd was like, "Who the F's the White Boy?"
Jeff Mayweather is a decent guy, but I've heard he has a quick temper.
Roger Mayweather seems a little punch drunk to me, but was nice enough to introduce himself to me one time at Pride Gym.
Buster Mathis is a great guy, I met him a few times, but got to talk to him for a while when his dad was staying in the Hospital I worked at as a Security guard.
Tony Tucker knew my dad, and came over and said hi to us at a GGs tourney. Seemed like a nice guy, but very intimidating.
I held the door open for Muhammed Ali when he was visiting Buster Mathis Sr, I said hey Champ, and he smiled and gave me a wink.
Boxers are like other guys, some are asses, some are nice. They've all got pretty good size egos. You have to have confidence to step in that ring.
I have a friend who works in Hollywood and meets all the stars. He was saying most of the time the opposite of what you think is probably true. The guys who you'd think would be jerks are super nice and vice versa. Could be true with Boxers as well.

Tell us about the time you met Barrera
the Barrera meeting took me by surprise on the street outside MGM and I didn't really say much to him as others started to crowd waiting for photos.
I asked him if he thought Ricky would win and he kind of grinned and nodded - does he speak English ??
I also told him that I would whoop him inside a round if i ever put the gloves on . His silence, puzzled expression and hurrry to get away from me spoke volumes - he was shitting himself and knew he was not worthy of being in the presence of a true fighting machine.

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
Matthew Saad Muhammed. Several years ago while at the IBHOF induction I was in one of the tents looking at some stuff and saw Saad. Three little kids walked up to him and asked him for his autograph and he just blew them off saying he didn't have time. Then he stayed for awhile and continued looking around before he left. I know some people may say it was his right to refuse to sign, but these athletes have to remember they would be nothing if it wasn't for the fans. Moral: Don't sh*t where you eat. On the flip side Carmen Basilio, Gerry Cooney and Emile Griffith are some of the best guys you'll ever meet.

Barrera's English isn't bad I don't think. I think it was the first Morales fight where all press conferences and conference calls were done in English to garner some press attention.

I actually grew up knowing that guy.
He's one of the nicest guys I've ever known actually, I was at his fight against Michael green. And even though he lost he still signed by book
it said "To my friend" on it and then he signed his name :) Very classy and nice guy. Always loved to see him, and that was the first fight i was ever taken to :)
That said, I was also friends with Lionel Butler growing up, I was like 5 lol awesome guy :)

Bad part was the autograph wasnt for me it was for a young quadroplegic kid in a hospice who was a big Bowe fan. When I told him what happened he had the nurses destroy everything he had with Bowe on it

To be honest pretty much all the guys I have ever met have been top notch in the way they treated me....Though I will say it seems to me that ex-fighters who had limited success seem to be the biggest assholes...EG-Elija Tillery (the guy that kicked Bowe in the shin like a girl) was the biggest asshole I met...He was at a gym one day and I walk in..somehow he hears I am from the press and he assumes I was there to ask him for an interview:rolleyes:...he gets arrogant and tells me...."You need to make a F***** appointment you can't just roll in here expecting shit like that"....
Sooo I walk past him to see Verno Phillips and talk with him (Verno used to train by me and I have known him for years).....Then explained to Tillery I had just bought the gym.....
The shithead had the nerve to ask me if I would put up a picture from one of his fights in the gym.....
Oliver McCall I thought was going to be a jerk as well...he insisted I call him "Mr McAll" when I spoke with him.....I ignored it and after the 5th time he loosened up and was a nice guy.....
To his defense though it was when he was trying to comeback and the press was blasting him left and right so he was on the defensive.....

Re: Boxer's you've met......and disliked.
I have to say Mike Tyson when he came over to London for the Julius Francis fight a 6 or 7 years ago. I think you get a better judge of boxer away from cameras and the lenses. I can remember in London, some kid asked Tyson for an autograph, the kid could not find pen, so the kid said to Tyson "Can I just run the shop and get a pen" like in that innocent way kids do (lol)
Tyson just waited there, with all his entourage saying 'Cmon Mike leave him, lets's go". I mean he had stuff to do, I wouldn't mind but the kid was a few minutes too, so it wasn't an in and out job, but Tyson just waited there until the kid came back with notepad and not only did Tyson give him an autograph, he also gave him a ticket to the fight.
