At what age do you think Trainers should give up working the pads Im 65 next but people tell me they still enjoy me taking the pads and I still enjoy ,althougth not as sharpe as I was. Whats your take

I actually thoughht you weren't an advocate of the pads Scrap.
I think the pads should be used for technique and therefore there's not a great deal of force involved so any person with the correct knowledge could use them, regardless of physical state.
IMO there is far too much emphasis on speed and power when doing the pads.
Its all a show really.
I agree. THey're especially useful IMO for a trainer to look at a beginners technique and correct them while doing the excercise.Quote:

My trainer is 76 and still does the pads. He gets some problems with swelling on the wrists mind.

The old guys that used to give me mitts would say the same thing... it's not the mitts per se, it's working them with the heavies that jars the back and shoulders, etc.Quote:

Im good with Featherweights, Im 6ft 3ins Hes 6ft 8 and a bit and a rush job . Should have taken the flip flops off usually move better than that ;D

You see that guy with the pads? That's Charlie Goldman, he was in his 60's when he trained Marciano. I believe that he's the inventor of the punching pads. As you can see Charlie's pads have less padding as today's and look look more like oven mitts than anything else. If you could see inside of those gloves of Charlie's, you'd find a pair of gnarly hands that have seen more than their fair share of fights.
So if old Charlie could do it, don't you think that you can too? ;D
;D Chris I believe the Russians came up with the cocept of Pads in the 30s, turning the gloves round on there Hands, then adapted the idea. Anyway thats the story from people of old who told me. As you know there are different techniques how to use the pads, looking at the photo I dont think Charlie held them firm which makes the wear and tear exceptable plus He was a little fella so it would be hard for Him. Bet his elbows were F888ed. ;D

65 is not really that old - you must know a lot of crazies who do insane things at all ages in your line of work!
What advice would you give yourself Scrap?
I find it easier to give other people advice than to take my own - perhaps made uncertain by thinking over too much why I should or should not do things until I really have no idea!
Perhaps you could make yourself a moderated plan - never do it on consecutive days and make sure you supplement with glucosamine etc.
Do you think your frighters need pad work every day anyway?
UseuallyI dont work the pads like that, Im more a position and why type. Working on the first shot and where you should be after.
I never got to do pad work with you Scrap - would have been interesting! :)
Pity I didn't have more time in the UK! I hope to return at some stage though. :)
One of the trainer's at my gym is 62 and he sometimes does the pads for me, and i've have had no problems with him infact he's very knowledgable. And often gives me a quick tap on the face, if i drop my hands slightly after i've finished punching.Quote:

And i agree with Donny i think most of the stuff i see is for show, i mostly just practice technique with my punches on the pads. Getting my hands up ETC.
I have a trainer that's 82 years old and he still puts up the pads every now and then ;D
However he puts us straight when we hit too hard ;)

He's been having a long lasting shoulder injury now though, so that might end it :(
