Khan one of the main men in the division

UK Boxing News
Khan Confidence Sky High
Amir Khan faces Michael Gomez at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Saturday but his confidence is such that he is already talking about fighting and beating the world’s very best lightweights.
Despite having fought just one fighter remotely resembling genuine world class in his 17 fight career, the confident 21 year-old Olympic silver medallist firmly believes that he can take care of business against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, David Diaz and Nate Campbell.
"I’m fighting in front of 10,000 on Saturday night so I think I’m one of the main men in the division," said Khan.
"I’m not just going to be one of the main men, I’m going to the number one, and everyone’s going to be after me.
"I’ve got a high rating with both the WBO and the WBC, and I feel ready for a world title shot.
"Diaz and Pacquiao are both great fighters, but I’m confident that I could beat both of them."
Khan also fancies his chances with WBA/IBF and WBO king Nate Campbell.
"I’d love to fight Campbell," added Khan. "After I’ve taken his(Campbell) world titles away from him he’ll be giving me the respect I deserve."
Good luck to Khan
He has to be careful though, I remember a British Olympic heavyweight fighter who drew big crowds and thought he was ready for the big fights early
What was his name? ;)

David Diaz is a great fighter?:-\

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
Was it Fraudley Harrison? ;D
I think Amir needs to step up the competition in his next fight. Gomez doesnt do a lot for him but I think he can handle him. Khan needs a big test in his next fight for sure.

He's very ambitious. But nothing's wrong with that.

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
if limmond can drop kahn heavily pac man would put him through the ring! he believes his own hype and that will be his huge downfall echoes of audley harrison.

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
You cannot fault ambition, but i can't stand stupidity.

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
Khan has had problems with his chin throughout his amateur and professional career, he is a skilled boxer and I think if he had a better chin he would have a great chance, but unfortunately there is no training you can do to improve your chin, as soon as he faces a decent fighter with a big punch he will be in trouble. Gomez is well past it and was hardly a world beater at his best, but I think for the first 2 round he has the potential to give Khan problems. He will be exposed when he steps up in class.

This is a bit of a shame, and I kinda hoped the bad chin was largely based on 1 or 2 fights where he got KD'd. I also hope you are wrong, but I suspect as many others do too you may be right.
I know people don't like him for his arrogance and ambition, but I see his style and speed and it is why I liked him right away so that negated his words and actions for me.
Time will tell I suppose, but I do like watching him.

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
I hope I am wrong too, of all the young guys coming through he is up there with the most talented, it is such a shame that of all the flaws to have this is the most difficult to do anything about. But hey David Haye also had the same problems, he was stopped a number of times in the amateurs and has been down and been stopped in the pro's but he has made it be a world champion, his skill has got him through, maybe Khan can do the same. Think if he is selective who he fights he has a chance, there are a few top guys at Lightweight who don't carry that knockout punch. He just has to be a lot more careful than most. I like watching him as well, will see.

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
I think everyone is jumping on the chin band-wagon really...
The shot Limond hurt him with hit him high on the temple. How does this relate to his chin? Craig Watson also put him down in the ams but he's a pretty big welter weight. I also doubt anybody on here has even seen the knockdown.
I've seen him take a few shots to the jaw and his reaction has been fine. I wouldn't go as far as saying he has a good chin, i just think it's pretty much untested so far.

You kidding? It was all over the news at the time. And has been shown on various boxing shows over the last few years.. Like every Watson fight.
It was clear very early on Khans mob were being ULTRA careful matching him with non punchers.
Limond can't break eggs. Doesn't matter where the shot landed, Limond could only hurt a chinny fighter. Which is what Khan is.

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
Theres no dought that Amir Khan is fast and Gomez will find it real tought to get up close and personal with Amir, but with the bookmakers have Gomez 8-1 for a straight win then i'm putting £5 on Gomez to lamp out Khan.It might seem too unrealistic saying that but i feel Gomez will just steam in and rough Khan up and hopefully land a hook to his glass chin.

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
You can get 100/1 per round for Gomez to win.
If you fancy Gomez to blast him out early, some shrapnel on the rounds is probably the best bet ;)

I wouldn't leave out the first round.
Although I strongly expect it will be Khan left standing (at the much more conservative odds of 4/1) ;)

I've never seen anybody on here say they've seen it. I've seen people say 'didn't he get knocked down by craig watson?' quite a lot tho.
I don't think being hurt by a shot that lands on your temple has anything to do with your chin. It could happen to absolutely anyone regardless of how big a puncher the opponent is. Anyway we've bored eachother enough when we've disagreed on something before so if it turns out he has a weak chin, i'll gladly accept 'i told you so's' from you :p
I agree that they are being very careful by matching him with non punchers. Still surprised that they have put him in with Gomez when he has absolutely nothing to gain from it.
Either way i shall be taking those 100/1 odds by slamming a quid on each of the first 4 rounds for Gomez to shock Britain. Big gambler me :D

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
I've just come back from the bookmakers after shotting a few quid on GOMEZ to win by a streight win at 8/1.Im going to put more on tomorrow with having a bet on naming the right round too!I fancy 3,4,5rounds because if he does'nt clock Khan by then, then it'll be too late i think!:-\

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
Hi i'ne just come back from the bookmakers after putting on a bet on Gomez to win.I've put two quid on each of these rounds...rounds 2,3,4 at 100/1 odds for each one!Its alot to ask i know but you never know.Good odds for a two horse race!;D

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
This fight is going to be a farce . Gomez didnt even get in his face at the weigh in .
It will be over b4 it begins. Gomez shouldnt be in there .

Re: Khan one of the main men in the division
Damn i really thought i was £200 up when Gomez clocked Khan in the 2nd round.I was screaming me head off for Gomez to finish Khan off after he quickly got back up.Khan was still on rubbery legs a minute after Gomez caught him with that left hook.I knew that if he did'nt finish him off in the 2nd,that Khan would come out blazing....which he sure did at the start of the 3rd.By then i knew that i lost the bet:eek:.It was a cracking fight even known it only lasted 5 rounds.I was pretty pleased thre way Gomez was fighting at the opening rounds,by bobbing and weaving on his way in.Yes he did get clocked loads of times but it was going to be like that no matter what with Khan having hight and reach advantange.I enjoyed it even know that i lost £10.Nevermind.I like Khan as a fighter he is really quick but like what was said about him after the fight,He still has a bit to learn.Well done to Gomez....He wasd game for sure!!!!!;)

He's obviously got confidence in his own ability. Which is fine.
I don't like how he was saying Gomez was world class after the fight. That's a little naive.

Im not defending Khan but thats a good point Ono remember Mundine was KO'ed with a temple shot by feather fisted Ottke, but then he goes 12 hard rounds with a puncher like Kessler and Mundine has never been stopped since, im not comparing the two but its an interesting point to bring up IMO.
