Jones-Calzaghe: September 20?
Wednesday, June 25 2008
By Flattop
Word is that the Roy Jones Jr. vs. Joe Calzaghe mega-showdown is close to be finalized. HBO is positioning the pay-per-view for September 20th, the same date that Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather were originally to meet. It is not clear if the fight will take place in UK or United States.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Seriously though...I am pretty excited about this one.
Should be a smoker if Roy's back on point.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
I see a pretty even match up.
'Cannot wait also.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
I actually think Roy will pull off the "upset". Would like to see Joe go out undefeated, but I think Roy has one more good showing in him.
-
Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Hopefully RJJ can turn back the clock. The fact that Calzaghe has not got great punching power may mean tha Roy is not as timid as he has been lately.
COME ON ROY!!!

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Im balling over here..........Long story Haaa.Honestley,I think Calzaghe has a whole lot to loose here after forward "legacy" momentum coming off Hopkins win,Except the countless dollar bills he'll be bringing back home.....;D So Im cynical Lol

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't like the style matchup. I think it has the potential to be a boring fight. Jones will be picking his spots, looking to outbox and outslick Joe... while I don't see Joe representing any kind of KO threat to Roy. We could see a Jones defensive clinic with a little posing thrown in, along with some scattered Calzaghe flurries that look a little less impressive when shown in slow motion.
But then again I could be wrong.
;D

As much as I do not care for this fight, it can be a total toss up.I honestly did not put much stock at all in Tito Victory...more of a "event".The speed of Jones is some what deminished but remains there as well as his ability to exploit flaws and mistakes.I think Calzaghe must come out like Johnson did and get on him from jump off,Make his mind a mess and use those rough & tumble tactics on the inside that Joe is capable of...:-X.If he tries to out think or wait around,Jones will look to pot-shot him all night,I can see both hurt .

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Calzaghe will not be able to keep up with ROy speedwise, but he won't have to, All he needs to do is put pressure on Jones like he did against HOpkins, and he will either KO Roy, or overwhelm him with punches. Roy doesn't have the slick defense or footwork possessed of Hopkins, nor does he have the stamina to withstand Calzaghe. If Calzaghe were more brash and tried to simply outbox Roy the whole fight then that is the only way I see Roy winning because he is still too quick for Joe on the outside, if he isn't scared to let his punches go. If he needs 4 or 5 rounds to really open up like he did against Trinidad then I see Calzaghe countering Roy's not fully commited punches, then Roy going into a defensive mode for the rest of the fight only trying to survive.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
It isnt quite the fight I was wanting. But regardless, I shall try to get into the spirit of the matchup and just try to enjoy it for what it is....two veterans trading off.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
I think Joe has too much for him in 2008. He wins a UD. You can guarantee the last ten seconds of round twelve they both throw a flurry at each other. :)

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Not looking forward to this one Jones is shot to pieces he struggled against Hanshaw and even when he knocked him down he had no energy to finish him off, and even in the Tito fight he had to take big breaks so he could mount an offense, i don't want this fight to happen a legend like Jones deserves to go out on top and im rooting for him because im big fan of Roy Jones Jr and im hoping his speed and awkwardness will be enough but i don't think it will, Calzaghe stated that a fight between Tito vs Jones was an old hasbins fight so why does he want to fight an "old hasbin" its ridiculous. Both Calzaghe and his father contradict themselves all the time.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Last throw of the dice for Jones so i expect him to be well up for this one.
Can't wait but JC will have way too much for him i reckon:cool:
Jones will be involved for 4 or 5 rounds then he'll melt.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
This fight is on at the MGM GRAND i Las Vegas!Twat i was hoping it'll be over here in the U.K cos i was planing on going to watch it live:eek:

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
i ain't too excited about this, Jones might have the speed and accuracy to cause Calzaghe problems but at the end of the day it comes down to Calzaghes workrate that i don't think Jones will be able to deal with at this stage of his career. Calzaghe wins a UD, i do pray that Jones wins and ends his great career.

Joe should have insisted this was in Wales for his swansong:mad:

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
I like both guys... Been a Jones fan since I can remember, and recently been a Calzaghe fan. With that being said I think Roy is still faster and definrtly has more pop on his punches.. I think Roys lead right will make the difference and will keep Calzaghe off rythm... Calzaghe was hit flush quite a bit from and Old slow Hopkins, those same punches from Roy would have floored Cal with the snap thats on them...
Roy has evolved 10 fold, has a nice defense now and although he fights in spurts, so do 24 year old fighters, so whats the big deal? Calzaghe wont put a dent in Roy but can only hope his workrate makes the difference.. Roy has his confidence back as well, that was really his only limitation after the Tarver/Johnson debacle... Jones is far from shot;)

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
What a let down.
Joe should have gone for Wembley or Cardiff.
-
Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Jones will take time off against the ropes he rests at least 1 min of every round.
Jones will run and try to pot shot until he hits the rope and he will get a hurting.
A dominating mid fight stoppage by Calzaghe who is 4-5 levels above the Tito he fought.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Ive already said on another thread i'm putting my neck on the line and going for Roy Jones to win by TKO late.I look at this way if Hopkins can nearly beat Calzaghe quite a few thought he did win including myself i think Jones has better speed better stamina and more power than Hopkins so i think he will beat him between round 7 and 11 TKO.I think Jones will get up for this like he did Ruiz he will look at this as a massive challenge to prove doubters wrong and end his own career on top.
-
Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
If bhop couldnt beat JC even after a knockdown and a good 3-4pt lead in the fight i dont give RJJ much hope.
Much more the type of boxer joe will enjoy fighting against. For all his ringsmarts and power the definitive factor to winning or losing the fight for him is not how well he gets off his own gameplan, but whether he has the ability to mess up joes.
JC by a unanimous 117-111 decision that eventually leads to both men calling it a day

Yes, it should be in the UK if it really is his swansong. Hardgoing on the fans making yet another trip across the Atlantic. The Hopkins fight and the Hatton fight last year with PBF...a lot to splash out for.
Hopefully, its only Joes 2nd to last and we all get the big fight send off that would be a fitting testament to his career....Pavlik in Wales.

Hopkins at 43yo is far younger in boxing terms than Jones at 40yo.
Plus Hopkins was coming off his best career B2B wins, Winky wright and Antonio Tarver, Jones Hanshaw and Trinidad.
No comparison, Hopkins would eat Roy up, Roys style doesnt suit to him slowing down and Roy has about the same stamina as someone that has no stamina and to get tired against calzaghe is suicide to get tired and take time off against the ropes and not know how to hold and clinch could be classed as murder in the ring.
Mismatch im telling you.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Boxingtalk has an article saying jones split with king and the fight with joe is a definate, also said he'd fight peter and whoop his ass after he beats calzaghe. Jones is on one all of sudden, glad to see he's back to his old self, mouth wise anyway.

Roy may get a flash back and tell Calzaghe: "60-40 and i`ll whoop yo ass"

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
I'm actually looking forward to this fight. I doubt it will be FOTY or anything, but who knows? They're both nearing the end of two incredible careers, and sometimes that translates into one hell of a fight.
Or it could be a snoozefest - but I doubt it ;)
-
Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Yawn, I don't think Roy has anything left, have said that for a long time, how he looked against Ajamu, Tito and that other guy definitely didn't change my opinion.
Hopefully I am wrong and it turns out to be a good fight but I doubt it.

Joe is coming of wins over Kessler and Hopkins Roy Hanshaw and Tito.
Ive seen Roy since Prince whats his name and trust me it will be a snooze fest mismatch. Jones while still has a quick punch has no hope of knocking out Iron jaw and doesnt have the stamina to last 8rds before he is so tired he is falling over himself.
Hanshaw and Tito are 5-6 leagues below Calzaghe, i think Joe will knock hom out.

Re: Jones vs Calzaghe...September 20th? Cry little girls...cry! Heh heh.
Ironically, even though Roy seems to have very little left, Joe simply no longer has the weapon that Roy fears most, half decent power. I want joe to sign off undefeated, but I have a gut feeling that he's in a bit of trouble here, and at the least he's going to look bad against a Roy who doesn't intend to make the first move forward. Prime or not, I feel Roy's style is all wrong for Joe.
