who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I have put the 3 best british fighters in my opinion of the last 10 years in the poll and made a other category too for those who think that someone else deserves to be regarded as the best british fighter of the last 10 years. If you do choose the other category though please state who as I would be very interested to see who you think!

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
IMO Calzaghe is the best of those fighters. He has the chin, adaptability, speed, footwork and output. I think Calzaghe has the greater collective sum of his parts as compared with those other fighters.

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
Hatton.
Just feel that he's answereed the most questions in his career.
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
Lennox
Ten years gives him the last five of his career.. and he was about as dominant a champion as you can get.

I agree. I think that he's beaten better fighters (p4p) than Calzaghe has in Tszyu and Castillo as Hopkins was 43 years old when Joe fought him plus Eubank was over the hill, but you cant take away Kessler excellent fighter in his prime. For me second place has to be lewis he's beaten two ATG's in Evander and Tyson altough neither in their primes it cant be taken away from him plus both times he did get beat he came back and avenged. The only reason I don't rate him top is because of the way he retired after Klitschko instaed of giving him a rematch.

Call it what you want, but have you ever seen lewis look so shit other than the Klitschko fight? He went at the right time buddy. I did feel for Klitschko because he showed heart and was probably able to carry on but the cuts were bordering on permanent deformity lol.

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
If the choices are Lewis, Calzaghe, and Hatton.... then Hatton should not be getting any votes whatsoever in this poll.

Yeah the Bruno fight.
Huge Lennox fan, but all his early career he was comolacenet.
He admitted that and amended it after the loss to Rahman.

Yeah but he was not shot and gasping for breath after round two, he just had a shit fight. it happens.

No agreed he did look poor but didn't he take he Klitschko fight on short notice after training for someone else. I'm not 100% on this but I seem to remember something along those lines. If so that could well have been the problem. Also he looked poor against McCall and Rahman but looked good in both them rematches.

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I'd rate Calzaghe's win over Hopkins a bit better than Hatton's over Castillo.
Hopkins was old but never in wars, and was coming off wins over Tarver and Winky.
Castillo had started to look "past it" (all the weight making bollocks), and fought Hatton coming off a pretty bad (awful considering his prime) showing agianst Ngoudjo.

I think Lennox was hard to motivate at times and thats as much his own fault than anyone elses. It was the worst Lennox I ever saw but Vitali was there to fight and if not for the cuts he might just have knocked lennox out......who knows?
I still think Lewis retired at the right time and it was a smart choice, he was no spring chicken.

Lewis was meant to fight Kirk Johnson. Vitali was on the undercard.

Thanks for that I wasn't 100% like I said but as soon as I read this Reply it came back.

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
Lewis takes this one by a mile the heavyweight division has never been the same since he retired, then Joe and ricky comes 3rd.
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I've gone for Joe, but it's a toss up with Lewis. I edge joe due to Lewis' losses. IMO the Klitschko fight is the one that really demonstrated his class, past his best and unmotivated he was still able to beat the best guy of the next generation.
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I hastily voted for Calzaghe
I've changed my mind. I pick Lewis.
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I voted for Calzaghe.
Should of been Lewis though.
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
Lewis.I have Hatton over Calzaghe though.
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I went with Lennox Lewis but i would like to mention Naseem Hamed
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I think some confuse the term best with that of greatest. There are marked differences.
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
lennox for me
fought and beat the best their was to beat and retired as undisputed champ having beaten every opponent he ever fought.
When you really think about it we as a nation are blessed to of had these 3 great champions over the last decade.

Alright then...
The greatest is something that encapsulates the fighter who has achieved the most. Lewis was in the so called ultimate divisision and won a lot of big fights. He had his flaws though but was able to fix what was wrong. He proved his greatness but revealed great flaws.
But I think Calzaghe is the best. He hasnt beaten all the names Lewis has but he hasnt lost and I dont think he has revealed real weaknesses. He has no silly chin for example. He doesnt under prepare. He has the best raw skills. Calzaghe is the best of those fighters.
Lewis was a heavyweight which gives him the greatness, but skills wise the smaller guys are obviously better. And Calzaghe is the best of them.

Good post.
Although I wouldn't say Lewis had a "silly chin".
And I still rate Lewis the best of that three. ;)

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
I'd go with Lennox. I don't think he loses any credibility for the Vitali fight, if giving somebody 50 stitches and making that kind of damage to somebodies face doesn't mean you have won the fight I don't know what does. If you saw a fight in the pub and somebody ended up like Vitali, would you say 'oh but the other guy was a couple of points ahead on my scorecard' Lewis did a job on him - simple as.

Its my Tuesday night so Im liable to slip with my phraseology. Lewis didnt have a silly chin as a number of his fights have proven. But he could be knocked out by a lower breed of fighter. Rahman was a decidedly unfortunate affair. Hopefully James Toney will knock out that chump next week!
Ultimately its all down to opinions or just how you interpret the question so Ive no issues with the judgements made. I just have my own way of defining how the said judgement is made. And like Calzaghe as the fighter that is better in terms of beating any of those other fighters P4P.
I do think the initial question is seriously flawed and needs to define its terms more effectively. :-\

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
Lewis was the last great HW champ... the div has been a joke since he left...
Joe is as dominant as you can get at SMW but I still don't think that he's where Lewis was... I mean, the HW div is the most storied div in the sport...
Hatton is not close to these fighters IMO... I like hatton alot but the amount of title defenses that Joe has and the amount of time he's maintained as champ speaks volumes... If he hasn't passed Joe, he's definitly not passing Lenox.

I'm not sure who would win in a P4P situation. I didn't really look at it like that. Lewis sort of had a dominant presence that I don't think Calzaghe has ever really possessed.
I'd confidently pick Calzaghe to beat Hatton P4P though... and Lewis would easily KO him (Hatt). ;)

Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
Pleasantly surprised to see the results of the poll.
I voted Lewis but Expected Hatton to have a huge lead in the poll . Sanity prevailed though and Joe was second with the Hitman in 3rd place. History will rank them that way anyway .
-
Re: who is the best british fighter of the last 10 years?
Lewis definitely, Calzaghe is getting closer, but I felt he lost against Hopkins while Lewis beat the best he faced.

Well personally in general I would agree but I think that Ali was more skillfull a boxer than a lot of "greats" in lower divisions than him including Calzaghe. So smaller doesn't necessarily mean "obviously better". I know where your coming from though.

Are you serious?
Calzaghe is fighting an old Jones Jr for a reason. He wants to go out beating a big name and to look impressive doing so. I wouldnt be surprised to see Jones stopped down the stretch as his legs give out on him.

I dont think smaller always equates with being better in boxing. I just think with these three boxers the middle sized one is the better one.
