It is difficult to predict.
I think thats sayoing something.
Calzaghe was underwhelming in his debut at LightHeavyweight, Jones has done little to erase the memories of his devastating losses.
One thing that is certain Calzaghe will not replicate Johnson and Traver's respective wins.
Too late for Jones now I think. Hes past it and JC has done the wrong thing IMO fighting him. He should have fought Pavlik and cemented his legacy for good. Its like with Mayweather-Cotto, Calzaghe-Pavlik HAS to happen for the fans. Its very annoying.
As much as i like Roy the person i think this will be awful one-sided.
Joe to stop him mid-late.
I would have preferd to have seen this a decade ago .
I hope Jones crushes him.
very unlikely at this late stage of his career. Thats why its a none win fight for either man. I just want a Kelly Pavlik fight so badly.
And what will have to do after that? hes an old man, i really dont see him beating JC. He would retire and that would be it really. He wouldnt beat Tarver or get another shot at him I dont think. Either way the JC fight will be close and there will probably be a rematch etc and that will just take up a lot of time.
thats why its a no win fight really.
JC will destroy him!
Maybe not in the past, but RJJ is done, im confident he will take pounding:)
It should be a good fight to watch, but as you mentioned it should have happened 5 years ago or so.I was really hoping Calzaghe would fight the Awesome Pavlik"The Ghost!"but beggers cant be chooses!!!.Anyhow it'll be something to look forward to.I just hope its a better fight than the one with Calzaghe Vs Hopkins:-\;D
Calzaghe wins a UD by about 4rounds think Joe will have to be careful early cause Jones will be sharp with the right hand but i think he will tire after 4 then JC takes control.
Hopkins, win or lose, will make any fight look ugly. That's how he beat Winky. He muddies the waters into an unenjoyable fight. Personally, I had Wright winning, but absolutely nothing was clear. We didn't see Calzaghe be able to show what he can truly do at 175. That being said, he was still able to take the fight and rise from an early deficit to get a UD. Jones is going to have to be just as conservative to last a full 12 and fighting conservatively does not suit Jones' style unless he's in against someone in a lopsided match-up. Slap-punches or not, Joe will do it for the whole fight and Roy needs to be able to KO him or search in his closet for a pair of 29 year-old legs. I don't think Joe can KO him, but he can make Roy look like he doesn't belong in there.
Exactly.... We shouldn't have to be begging for a good fight, from someone who's being argues is top 3 P4P on some lists... We SHOULD be getting explosive fights with the likes of Pavlik.....
Sad fight in my opinion.. 5 years ago Roy would have looked much better... It's a shame seeing these fights play out a ridiculous way,,,, simply based on the fact that time has passed.... We are boxing fans in the end, not matchup fans...
Some things are just too little too late..
Roy like a lot of the greats has gone past his sell by date and Joe is in a no win situation,if he wins it's down to RJ being past it ,and if he loses it then he will be regretting it for the rest of his life.
A Roy Jones Jnr at his peak would beat JC and I think after the 1st round against Hopkins JC will not be dumb enough to underestimate RJ.....I agree with others though Pavlik would have been the better match
Roy can't win, just like JOe wouldn't have been able to beat Prime Jones... Right now JOe is too near his prime while Roy is so far away from it that its just a distant memory.
I can't see this even being that close after the first 4 rounds. Calzaghe all the way. Im not particularly excited about this matchup really.
Well...i guess i'm in a very small minority that thinks Calzaghe is one of the most overrated fighters in recent years. But that's a whole other discussion. In his prime...Roy would have toyed with Joe. Obviously Roy is now far from his prime and hasn't looked spectacular in quite some time. That being said...at 38 years of age, Joe isn't exactly "prime" either. Calzaghe's performance against Hopkins didn't exactly inspire confidence. Even though it's hard for pretty much anyone to look good against Hopkins...Bernard was 43 years old in his fight against Joe, was highly inactive in the fight, throwing only one punch the entire night (the straight right). Yet he still landed the harder, more meaningful punches and could have won the fight IMO. Some will argue that Joe figured out Hopkins and also threw flurries of combo's. But i guess i wasn't all that impressed with Calzaghe's pitter patter punching...most of which didn't land on target in the fight. That being said...Joe will be the obvious favorite against Jones. Not so much because Joe is the better fighter...but more because Joe is the more active fighter in the ring at this stage of their careers. However, if Roy is able to be sharp and ACTIVE in the fight...he certainly can win. One thing that will be in Roy's favor is that all the pressure will be on Joe. Most people think Roy is done. So Joe is in a lose, lose situation. If he wins...he beat a fighter that was a shell of his former self. If he loses, his legacy will be tarnished.
Jones is a great fighter but he just won't be able to produce come fight time as age cathes up with everyone.
He will cause Calzaghe problems here and there with his speed and accuracy and might even score a knockdown as Calzaghe sometimes gets off balance but won't he won't be able to maintain and will fall prey to Calzaghe's high workrate losing a UD.
That sounds pretty spot on to me. Roy has always relied on his supreme athletic ability which is now starting to fade. You make a good point about Joe's balance and that could be exploited by Roy as he can move quickly while totally balanced so is hard to hit. But that speed may have slowed and joes pressure and handspeed might catch him. I hope roy wins he's always taken on top fighters, Joe hasn't.
