Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Morning all,
I've been liking the look of this one for a while, so I figured I'd to a bit of a preview and an RBR to it. It is after all the week when James Toney and Hasim Rahman fought, so here's a focus on another former title challenger who still claims he can get back to the big stage, and has had a little more success recently.
British Heavyweight champion Danny Williams (39-6, 31 KOs) is probably one of the most inconsistent heavyweights that has graced British boxing, going from the sublime in victories over Mike Tyson, and a superb challenge against Vitali Klitschko, to the downright dreadful, in back-to-back losses against Matt Skelton in a snoozer, and the embarrasingly KO'd by Audley Harrison. There's no doubt Williams is an enigma, but at 35....Danny's found himself on a 4-fight undefeated streak and British champion once again. In March 2007, Williams came in mean and lean against Scott Gammer to claim the British title, but has got bigger again over the past three fights. No news on the weigh-in I can find so far...but should be interesting to see how he comes in tonight.
John McDermott (25-3, 16KOs) is the opposition for Williams tonight, and has flitted around the British title for quite a while, losing to Matt Skelton in a first round KO in his only challenge so far. McDermott's resume lacks any big names, but wins over Pele Reid and Scott Gammer in recent times have pushed him back up the British rankings. Not packing tremendous knockout force could be a problem, as has his chin in previous outings, but McDermott will be hoping that his six-fight undefeated streak since that loss to Skelton will be extended by one more fight, and send him home with the Lonsdale belt.
Personally, if Danny Williams comes in within viewing distance of his peak, he should be winning this, if not....well, who knows with Danny.

Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Danny has tons of heart, But a crispy biscuit for a chin. WIsh him the best though.

Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Williams has lost 25lbs since then and looks amazing.
on his day as good as any heavyweight.

Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Again its all according which Danny Williams turns up, he looked good in his last fight with Airich (on that controversial night) i'm gonna go with a Williams mid-late stoppage. I also do like John Mcdermott, he looks overweight and awkward but is more athletic than he seems but I think if Williams turns up up for it he'll go home the winner

Danny has a real sence of confidence now his last few fights hes been great.
I think danny will knock him out early.
Then id love to see him fight Peter that is very winnable.

Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
IF fat John doesn't totally freeze he could make it entertaining for a few rounds. Danny is such a SLOW starter these days - It's like he needs to be punched about a bit to get going. And Big John is pretty nimble for a fat man.
Problem is McDermott used to get schooled by Danny in sparring. So I don't see how there's ANY chance of him not pantsing it.
Williams can win by stoppage anytime he wants. Probably about the 5th.

Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Yes a lot depends on which day of the week it is with Danny but I would expect Danny to stop John McD going by his last fights inside 6 and looked in superb shape, both physically & mentally against Airich, and needed to be as he was up against the referee too!.
Looking in great condition and that farce against Audley Harrison now seemingly just a nightmare.

The problem for Williams is whether he will ever really be able to completely convince people that the dismal rematch with Audley was simply an off-day for him, and whether he can show he wants to proceed beyond British level by being consistent. If he wants to achieve as much as he still talks the talk, impressive quick KO is essential in my eyes.

Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
I saw big John kncoked out in the 1st round vs Skelton . He was down 3 times and Matt cant even punch so basically the 1st time Danny lands its over . Could be in the 1st or the 10th but either way Danny wins.

Not sure where you're based mate, but if you're in the UK it's on Sky Sports 1. It's a domestic bout, so if you're elsewhere you're probably out of luck.

Danny Williams Fight??

Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
OK, so the coverage is starting now, and we're looking at a group of Williams and McDermott's greatest hits. Williams's greatest being significantly better...
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
John McDermott always looks a little shy, a little timid for my liking, but then I'm not sure he's capable of looking really angry and hard. Mcdermott gets a good response from the crowd, and as he does his ringwalk, he keeps his eyes forward, but he may just look like too much of a nice guy to really intimidate opponents.
He punches the air to gee up his fans, and himself a little too.
Danny comes out in a silver vest...no hood or robe like McDermott. He looks proud of who he is, and looks in pretty good shape, and his little beard makes him look even harder. His eyes fixed too... but much more of an entourage. Next time its fight time.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
I don't think John McDermott has ever looked ripped, but there's no doubt he'll have prepared as best as he possibly can. As for Danny, there's a hint of definition on his abs...which have been frequently noticable by their absence. Looking forward to this one.
Round 1:
Williams looks to throw big right early doors, and McDermott cagey, looking to use the jab and keep Williams at distance. McDermott lands a decent jab, but Williams comes straight through and starts work to the body, and short punches in the clinch. Another clinch, and the ref breaks them up. The ref has a word already...not a good sighn. Left hook clips McDermott. Williams looking for the bingo punch already. McDermott with a jab, and misses narrowly with an uppercut. Big left and right from Williams, but McDermott lands an uppercut in there too. Williams pushes a jab in there. McDermott boxing well so far. Jab and a second.
Williams going for too much too early. Give that one to McDermott for his tidy work.
10-9
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 2:
Williams misses a haymaker. Right from Williams clips Big Bad John. Jab from Williams has more pop than the more ponderous ones from McDermott. Nice jab from Williams. Slow action so far....occasional flurries. Left hook, then a jab from Williams. McDermott returns a jab. Body shot from Williams, and acouple of short hooks in the clinch. Two short jabs from Williams, and McDermott starting to swell around the eyes. Mcdermott lans ajab, but misss=es an overhand right. Body shot, and jab from Williams, nice end to the round.
A little more from Williams.
19-19
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 3:
Body shot and left from Danny, then two decent rights before the clinch. Ref warns Danny Williams for hitting behind the head. This is probably the first time in quite a while that Danny is the smaller fighter in stature height and reach. Jab and right hook. McDermott not throwing as much this time, as Danny steps it up. They have a bit of a wrestle. The action slowing up, as they paw jabs at each other. Williams throws a right, but McDermott out of range.
Williams' round 29-28
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 4:
McDermott standing in the corner....and his trainer just poured a splash of water down his shorts. What??? McDermott with two jabs, but he looks worried going into the clinch. The ref has a word with them both again. Scrappy work on both sides really. Good jab from Williams, and McDermott backs off. Nice right to the body from Williams. Good straight right from Danny, and a second hook, and McDermott looks worried. Jab from Williams.Left hook from Mcdermott, but Williams throws three hard body shot landing nicely. Williams dictating, but a firm right hand in the clinch from McDermott. Williams jabbing on his way in, and McDermott clinches. Jab from McDermott, but Williams digs in a few shots to the body. McDermott eyeballs Williams on the bell.
Williams in charge now.
39-37
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
McDermott makes James Toney look like an impressive physical specimen. Every time he gets hit to the body it's killing him.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 5:
They swap jabs early on. Williams trying to get close, and they clinch. Two jabs from McDermott.Jab and uppercut from McDermott, and Williams in huge trouble, He's gone. McDermott has turned it. Williams in dire straits takning uppercuts and hooks, and Williams is all done. He's not there. Uppercuts and hooks from McDermott, and finallyWilliams tries to fight back. McDermott is so close here. Big uppercuts time and again, and a right coming back from Williams. McDermott has to finish him now. Jab from Williams, his head seems to be back. Right from Williams, does he know how close he was to defeat there. I was half expecting Dave Parris to step in, and Williams has survived. Scintillating round, as McDermott lands a big' un, and follows up with everything he has. McDermott with a huge round.
10-8, Williams was out on his feet.
47-47
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 6:
How did Williams survive> Is McDermott gassed? Is Williams' head there. Two good jabs from Williams, and a body shot. Dodgy chin....hell no.. Huge uppercut from McDermott, and Williams rattled into clinching once more. McDermott surely has to press it. Williams with a right hook, jab, and two body shots. They're both f***ed. Left hook and overhand right from Williams. Body shot from McDermott, and two jabs. Another uppercut form McDermott, but Danny stunned, but comes back with some massive body shot. Short hooks from Williams. McDermott jabs as Williams recovers from his effort. Clinch, and they both lean on each other for strenght.
Williams. Just
57-56
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 7:
Williams with a jab and some bodty shots. Big body shots and a left hook catches McDermott. More body shots. I can't believe this has reached the second half....if this goes to points I'll eat my shoe. Jab from Williams. They swap jabs, and McDermott, despite his success, isn't coming forward. Williams with a jab and a body shot. Another hook from Williams, but catches an uppercut, just not the force of his bigger shots two rounds ago. Swapping jabs. Williams trying to find a way through the guard. Bpdy shot amd two hooks from Williams, and unloading to the body.
Williams working this one.
67-65
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 8:
After a poor start....that fifth round was epic. Yvonne must be loving her gamble now. If only williams can capitalise. Jab from McDermott, but Williams digs three and four hard body shots before they clinch. Left hook from McDermott as Williams goes in. Two good jabs from Williams. It's gone back to the cagey stareout. Williams with some jabs. Quieter round this one as they both prepare for the final surge. McDermott takes a right hook, but another clinch.
Quiet round, just to Williams.
77-74
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 9:
Two jabs from McDermott. Lots more body shots, and I think Williams is going to try and go upstairs more now. Good left and right from Williams, but Danny warned for straying a little low with the shots. They weave and stare at each other, hope this isn't the pattern for the last third. McDermott backing off at the slightest hint of a punch, and Williams cautiously looking for the gaps. ZZZZZ. Not criticising, just that these are the fitness levels of British level fighters. Good left and right from Danny, but McDermott gets a jab, before Danny with a flurry to the body. McDermott lands a jab on the bell.
Not the best of the fight. Tie.
87-84
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 10:
Frank Maloney geeing up McDermott in the corner. They trade jabs, but Williams goes with a big flurry to the body, but McDermott brings back some hooks of his own. Jabs form McDermott not doing much damage. Right uppercut lands as Williams comes forward, but Wiliams not too flustered. Williams digs two hooks to the body once more. . Another clinch....and I fear I may get a shoe sandwich later. Jab and a clinch from Williams. McDermott with some jabs of his own, and another uppercut, and Williams' gumshield goes bouncing along the canvas. Accidental I think. Jab and straight from Williams, but McDermott returning a jba. Lots of posturing over recent rounds.
McDermott just edges it on a marginal workrate.
96-94
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 11:
Come on, lets have a big final flurry! Jabs fall short from both guys, and Williams digs to the body in a clinch. Good body shots, but a right hand from McDermott staggers him. Williams still putting money in the bank with body shots. Two jabs from Williams, but McDermott rattles in some of his own. McDermott has to gamble now. Williams ducks a jab and puts his own to the body. Short body shots from Williams, but McDermott not doing it. Williams DEDUCTED A POINT for another low blow. Jabs and hooks from Williams as he charges forward. Body shots, and McDermott slumps into the clinch. Uppercut and a hook from Williams. Another POINT DEDUCTED from Williams for pushing in the face after the clinch. KO time for Williams? Crazy scenes here. Jab from Williams, and body shots, and McDermott hanging on. Williams may have edged the round, but losing 2 points? No idea where to put the points!
104-103 Williams. Maybe.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Round 12:
Williams needs a KO in his mind, surely, as McDermott ties up. They swap jabs. Uppercut from McDermott, and huge hooks swung and missed from Williams. Williams' gumshield must be badly fitted, third time. (space) Williams deducted yet another point for spitting out the gumshield. Surely there's no way Williams can take this.
McDermott's round.
113-112 final score.
(Sorry, I accidentally deleted a bit of the last round. Good trading, and both fighters rattled.)
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
That was dodgy refereeing at the end there. Danny was gonna win by a point but the ref decides to deduct 3 points off Danny in the last 2 rounds
Im glad Danny won cuz they tried to rob him again
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Jim Watt has McDermott ahead by 5 points on his card, but Danny Williams' shenanigans may have lost him his belt. McDermott should have finished it in the fifth. Bizarre and compelling fight.
Majority Decision
113-113, 114-111, 114-113
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Danny Williams!!!!!!!!!!
OMG, he must be the luckiest man in the Goresbrook Leisure Centre tonight. He got away with this one big time! Rematch has to be made. McDermott gutted, and the crowd booing a lot.
Excellent, if strange fight. Williams has the belt, but it's McDermott with his hands in the air.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Cracking RBR as usual mate, I'll have to wait till I can rep you but it's in the post fella. Cracking job.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Saw the last 3 rounds. Williams looked really really bad in those last 3.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
What a fuckin bullshit decision. Great fight though. I thought Williams wouldn't make it out the 5th after he got smoked. Jammy bastard Williams, he should give Mc Dermott an immediate rematch, I had John winning clearly, especially with the 3 points deductions.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Danny is such a fuuckin wierdo!!!
He is the epitome of inconsistancy, I hope for their sakes he has no fans;D
He seems to be made of jelly, whenever he gets caught flush by anyone he wobbles everywhere.
If he gets another title shot, he will only emarrass himself again, coming in fat and what was all that leaning down in the first about.
If you cant stop someone who Skelton sparked in the first you havent got much power.
-
Re: Danny Williams v John McDermott RBR - 10pm UK Time
Danny Williams says he'll vacate: "It's the same referree that robbed me against Michael Sprott. The referee tried to rob me. I was waiting for him to stop punching in the fifth, he didn't. He's a very good fighter. I still think I got it, life is all about motivation. He fought like a warrior. I think I have to vacate, and let people like John take over."
John McDermott isn't moaning at all though, very gracious magnanimous comments in the aftermath: "I think I broke arib in the third round, but I thought I won it. I showed a Warrior's heart and for the first time fought like a real champion. Danny fought really well, and congratulations to him."

Dannys got power as weve seen in the past but he didnt show it tonight
If I were Danny Id go nowhere near John again . He cant get motivated for this level and he just looks really poor. but I cant say hes washed up cuz hes been performing like this on and off since the 1st Julius Francis fight on the Barrera - Llyoyd undercard .
