Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
Joe is currently 45-0. He hasn't given up his WBO title meaning that after he's fought Jones he can move back down and continue to defend it.
After Jones a win would put him at 46-0.
He would be just 3 fights away from Marciano's legendary all time record and 4 fights away from equalling Joe Luis for the most ever title defenses.
So if I was Joe my plan would be to fight Roy Jones, then take on Pavlik.
Now if he wins he'd be 48-0.
It would be stupid to retire at that point, it's like climbing Everest, getting 15 meters from the top and then saying 'That's high enough' and climbing back down.
If I was him I'd take the Jones and Pavlik fights to secure my legacy as a great fighter.
If I won them both I'd then fight 3 absolute stiffs, maybe give Manfredo a rematch before challenging Wayne Elcock and John Duddy or something just to break all records.
To retire undefeated at 47-0 just 3 fights away from breaking two of the most prestigious records in the sport is like pulling your racing car into the pits after leading on the final lap.
He must fight on, against bums just to get those wins and break those records imo.
Do it for Britain!

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
Only 2 problems with your theory.... Jones and Pavlik:cool: not sure he gets by Jones and at his age he will start to slip naturally
-
Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
he could easily get the record facing bums after the jones fight but dont be so sure he gets past jones i think calzaghe is looking past jones and dont realize how much of a threat jones still is
-
Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
I agree with both of you, Jones and Pavlik would be monster challenges for him and he can't underestimate either of them.
But I'm talking about what happens in the event of him winning them both.
To retire at 47-0 and so close to beating both Marciano's and Luis' records would be foolish imo.
Luis and Marciano have near God like status not just within the boxing community but the world at large, for Joe to break both of their records would be an amazing feat.
He'd hands down no question be the greatest ever British fighter and would achieve boxing immortality.
Don't you think IF he gets by Jones and Pavlik he should fight 3 stiffs just to break the records?
If you were in that position, what would you do? I'd without a doubt take those fights and get back with Frank Warren who could hand pick me some suitable fodder to look good against.

if he beats jones and pavlik then he can for certain fight 3 mediocre opponents to get the record i think he would deserve it beating 2 great names like that although i wouldnt mind him facing lucian bute or winner of taylor vs froch if that happens

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
I think if Joe does fight 5 more times he will lose, probably to a guy that wouldnt win a round off him at his peak.
Calzaghe is the fittest 36yo i have ever seen (boxing terms) how much longer that will last jumping up and down in weight im unsure.
Jones then Pavlik and out he would have nothing else to prove.

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
Not to mention you are forgetting the GIANT that is the man in my avatar.
Who went 50-0 as an amateur and 51-0-1 as a pro. defended his WBC title 22 times. Won the WBA & WBO titles.
Not to mention the IBF title which he defende twice before walking out on top.

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
calzaghe isnt even in the same league as the great ricardo lopez
-
Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
Another problem is that Calzaghe was only ONE of the champions for a long time, Sven Ottke was champ for something like 20 fights at the same time where as in Louis day there could only be one man!

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
Calzaghe gets past Jones with a UD or even late Tko, But gets smashed against Pavlik

Yeah but that draw just ruins the record don't you think? I'm not even joking here, I seriously think if he retired 51-0 he'd be far more well known to the public at large as silly as that sounds.

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
I cant believe people see jones as a threat. This fight should have been made years ago, jones is way past his best. What has he done latley?? he's beaten trinidad who had come out of retirement fighting way above his natural fighting weight after coming off a pasting from winky wright.
Oh and not forgeting his decision wins over prince badi and hanshaw who wern't even considered legitimate contenders.
Calzaghe is going to have an easy time with jones but in years to come when people look back at his record the jones win will look good for his legacy.
cant see him bothering to make it to 50 fights to pad his record though as he only wants big names now and the only one out there is pavlik and i dont see that fight happening!!

No he is not. They shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. It's an insult to the great sport of boxing to do so.

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
If he gets by Jones Jr and Pavlik he should fight some medium range contenders. Not Tarver , or Erdei. I would like to see him fight like a Joey Spina , a rematch with Peter Manfredo ( terrible stoppage) , or a Clinton Woods. I would like to see him with Chad Dawson. I think Tarver would give him a loss and this late in his career he doest need that. I do belive Pavlik beats him by tko in the late rounds.

Joey Spina? ;D Seriously?

Legend he was.
One of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time. Top 3 IMO.

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
If he beats Jones and it is a IF then he fights Pavlik bye bye goes unbeaten record but i think it will go vs Roy Jones.;)
-
Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
I would seriously love it if Jones takes out Joe! All this eventual Calzaghe vs Pavlik talk would be right out the window.
I said it from the beginning of the Calzaghe vs Jones Jr. signing, Jones can beat Calzaghe. I think it will go similarly to his fight with Trinidad. When he figures out Joe can't hurt him, Jones will stop being cautious and just land that straight right all night!

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
I think that would be asking a bit much of Joe. 5 more fights.
His real concern is getting the big fights and getting out undefeated...wich is resonable enough.
"If" he beats Jones and Pavlik IMO he can put the seal on his legacy...going on to match other records fighting gimme's would be a dis-credit to him I think. 2 more, that should satisfy the remaining critics.
Provided he wins of course.

How's he looking past a guy he says is his last fight?

Re: Calzaghe should fight 5 more times..........
5 fights is 4 too far for Joe.
It should be Jones and out - alas I think (if he does get past a far from given victory v Jones) the money on offer to fight Pavlik will be too great for him to turn down.
Pavlik is too young, strong and hungry and I can't see Joe emerging the victor in that - I can see him getting badly kayoed in fact :-\
