HBO pissed off with Cotto..
...because he didn't gave them the interview. At the end of the fight the put up a series of events where COtto was down and spitting blood and then showing Cotto's family suffering for his dad. HBO has never done that before, SHAME ON Them!!!.
well at least that is what I felt when they showed that shit

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I would hope HBO is not pissed with Cotto, if they are then they can simply fuck off as Cotto didn't have to say anything, he left everything in the ring and you can't ask for more then that.

yup. Fuck that shit showing his family suffering.
Fuck HBO REALLY.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I also thought it was pretty pathetic of HBO to show Cotto's family distraught and upset. Real classy!

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
Yeah had to feel for the young bloke ,its a hard one to watch and will live with him forever. Cotto did right by going straight to them at ringside to put them at ease ; why climb back into the ring once your out.

Cotto gave MArgo his props and then when to his family.
IN fact Cotto will be pissed off at HBO probably Cotto's next fight could be on SHOWTIME.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
If HBO are really annoyed with Cotto then they need to take a look at themselves. Boxing is a hurt business - it's not like Cotto missed a putt, or hit a tennis ball out of court.
The post fight interview is a courtesy that the fighters extend to the network - if you're hurting or need medical treatment you go and get it and if that means you bail on the network then tough shit.
Were HBO annoyed that Levander Johnson couldn't give a post fight interview? Wankers...

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
Yes, I was really disgusted with them for doing that. That showed no class.
You know how hard that was for them to see that, and then for HBO to try to capitalize on that pain is disgusting.
I just sent HBO an email letting them know how that showed no class.
If anyone else wants to send one, here is the link.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I never even thought of that, personally Im pissed because even in victory they couldnt give Margarito his props. The man is the best WW in the world after that and all they can think of showing is Cottos??
Jim Lampley was f'ing crying I think they were hurt as much as Cotto.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
Now should a unification bout happen between Williams and Margarito?
-
Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I agree, I can understand watching it as it happened. But showing that montage of Cotto bloody and the family in tears was a bit odd.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I didnt see any of this. I watched the British coverage . So basically HBO tried to embarass Cotto by showing all the worst parts .
I heard Cotto gave Tony props . Was that at the post fight presser then ?
-
Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
HBO should be ashamed they sucked Cottos balls all fight they praised Cottos shots yet chose to speak over Margaritos good work.
Was sad to see.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I dont hold the family and such things against them, wasnt the first time prob wont be the last.. we have seen plenty of fernando vargas' wife, mother children suffering a bit..
Its not nice either way.. just cause its happened before..
And they really cant be pissed for not giving an interview..
and hey.. i wanted to see it and was pretty sure they would be able to catch up with him but i dont hold it against him that he couldnt give one

I think that was more to do with the tribute he payed to a sick camera man from hbo but im suprised how few people noticed that..
Guy sounded pretty rough.. quite some change from his usual silky smooth voice lol

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
Wow, I have no clue what you guys are complaining about.
They showed a montage of clips to show what a brutal fight it was and what an emotional toll it took on the family of the loser. It wasn't anti-Cotto.

It did to me and some of us here

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I was happy with the victory for Tony, but I really didn't like seeing the kids crying; not in the least. But it is a public place and that sort of thing is going to happen, with the cameras there to catch every moment.
Why they had to make a montage of the same things they had already shown several times I don't know.
-
Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I'm pretty sure they did show Gatti's wife having a stroke when Gomez roughed him up.
-
Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
Cotto is an HBO fighter and is probably under contract to provide a post-fight interview.
HBO is pissed-off beacuse he is less bankable after a loss and there is no guarantee that that they will get in on Tony's next fight

So let me get this straight....
You think that in the minutes immediately after a great fight that featured a fighter (Cotto) that HBO has supported for years and has a great relationship with... that the HBO production team decided on the spot that "Cotto lost and didn't give an interview, so let's rub it in his face by throwing together a quick segment of him getting punched in the face and his family crying!" ??
I'm sorry but that's one of the most outrageous things I've read here in some time. And it's surprising coming from you because your posts are generally very good here. But you're coming off like a sore loser.
Kellerman even said right on the broadcast that it wasn't that Cotto lacked the desire to give an interview, it was just that he was understandably distraught over such a big loss.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I'm going to address what I think are the three best points thus far:
1. HBO commentators are F*ing hypocrites. They spent the whole night rooting for Cotto, even saying he was winning the fight "even though he looks like the loser." Sounds like the fix was in on the cards (lol)... Then they same commentators said it was only a matter of time b/4 Marga knocked him out, and it could be dangerous for fighters to stay in the ring too long (when you know they can't win)...?
2. They gave no real love to Margarito. The discussion revolved around Cotto's loss, which continued through the video clip (which did NOT show Marga, only his punches to Cotto) onto the end of the broadcast. I wouldn't be surprised if Marga did NOT fight there again--JUST LIKE NATE CAMPBELL.
3. They way they questioned Cotto's ability to come back from being 'broken, when they clearly say the damage he took, when they were riding his nuts all night, until he didn't come out for the inteview.
Thx for the post!!!

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I think people are blowing the HBO thing out of proportion. Look at it this way, Cotto was favored to win, so in a round-a-bout way, Cotto losing is a bigger story than Margarito winning. When Tyson lost to Buster Douglas, people were more fascinated with seeing replays of him on the canvas struggling to get his mouthpiece in rather than seeing Douglas with his hands raised like Rocky. Even though it's rare to have a fight as great as this take place, it's much more rare to see an undefeated champion get beaten into submission. HBO was playing to what intrigued people more.

Yep, That was a real tear jerk for the family, Cotto got fuked up is why he did not give a interview.

Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
i just do nt agree with the fighters kids being present win or lose (i have a kid) HBO have done this before many times they showed Hattons girlfriend distraught after his loss. Fighters should think what they are putting there kids through if they lose before they let them attend the match. Cotto is clearly a family man but i be this kid does not attend another.
-
Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
It was sad too see, but they were present and it is hbo. Maybe it was in poor taste, but as stated above maybe its in poor taste to have your young children exposed to their father taking punishment like that. Cotto and his family understand the risks of boxing.

my sense on the matter when it happened was that HBO was simply trying to be melodramatic (and i guess with this particular footage they had time to burn). in another thread, i pointed out how HBO is generally melodramatic; in other words, they spend a lot of precious time and words hyping what needs no hype, thus both insulting our intelligence (and devotion to the sport) and distracting us from the fight. by the way, all this talk about puerto rico versus mexico is a perfect example of this utter bullshit. this was a tremendous event between two specific athletes, cotto and margarito, not some bullshit part IV of some hollywood movie. this holds regardless of whether many puerto ricans and mexicans do emphasize to themselves some enduring rivalry.
what HBO needs to do is drop kellerman, drop the old drunk (i forget his name), drop buffer (i remember there was a thread on buffer vs. lennon; i couldn't believe how many preferred buffer--the professional wrestling-like used car salesman announcer--to lennon), and just have steward and/or an intelligent boxer, and keep the play-by-play (Lampley) on a short leash.

Agree 100%. Not a smooth move by Cotto.

I'm pretty sure Cotto is on a fight to fight basis with HBO or whoever. He is not an HBO fighter. His fight against Paulie wasn't done by HBO and his fight vs Quintana was on Shotime.
-
Re: HBO pissed off with Cotto..
I didn't realize people thought HBO was pissed and that's why they showed the kids, I thought HBO was actually mad and they also took issue with this.
I thought it was sad, but indicative of the fight. I mean it was a great fight, obviously heartbreaking. They talked a whole lot about how close Cotto was with his kids, his kids were in the production meetings and everything, I think it was a just a bit of a follow up.

Jim Lampley is the worst announcer in boxing history. Whatever he says, the opposite is usually happening. Both Steward and Kellerman were correctly wondering whether Cotto would be able to maintain this pace with Margarito. Lampley called their statement "audacious." Steward almost had to apologize for saying that he thought the left uppercut would be Margarito's main weapon and that he thought that Margarito was too big for Cotto. He acted this way because Lampley was shamelessly promoting Miguel Cotto.
The clip at the end was truly classless. I don't think that HBO was pissed off with Cotto. I just think that they didn't know any better. They gave the boot to Larry Merchant who usually tried to wax poetically and make inane analogies about what took place. Think this was their attempt to show a "Raging Bull" type moment, but, of course, it reeked of taking advantage of Cotto and his family.
