Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
Welterweight history ? obviously the first candidate is Sugar Ray Robinson but i heard he got dropped alot especially in his early career but he was only stopped once in his career at a much heigher weightclass due to the heat so you can't argue with that.................
Then we have other tough guys of the older era like Carmen Basilio/Kid Gavilan/Barney Ross.................
But then we have some of the newer generation like Shane Mosley/Pernell Whitaker/Oscar De La Hoya............
But anyway where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in Welterweight history ? i would say he is close to the top 5 if not in the top 5.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
He's well up there when you say welterweights.
I suppose you could put him up there with;
LaMotta, Armstrong, Basilio etc.

I didn't know Jake LaMotta was a Welterweight i always thought he was Middleweight.....................
Good call on Henry Armstrong he slipped my mind he is a bit like the older version of Antonio Margarito with his non stop attack but obviously much more skilled.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
He has a great chin forget Welterweights he would be right up their in any weight P4P his chin is unreal the way he just walks through bomb after bomb and keeps jogging forward scary stuff.

I completely agree whats scary about Tony is not that he can absorb punishment its that he can jog forward for 12 rounds whist taking it:o
Like Jason in Firday the 13th

LaMotta beat SRR in 1942 I believe.
SRR was still very young and the fight was at Welter, their first trilogy was at welter I believe.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
For their first fight, LaMotta was 157 pounds and Robinson 145. Lamotta was a middleweight, even if he had at one point scraped into that division, he acheived all his fame and success at middleweight.

He used saunas in order to shed every ounce of water from his body and he competed for manynearlty fights at 147.
I was unaware of that weight diference, ty for the information.

There are different levels of taken punishment. Margarito is up there with the very bets since his style ships a lot of punishment, whereas Whitaker Mosely Leonard and ODLH would prefer to not get hit. The last four had very dependable chins (and tough as nails) which wouldn't let them down, but IMO guys like Marg and Lamotta are freakish and at another level again.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
For what I have seen this year he is a Top 5 no doubt. If he at least would have been a top 20 he would have been KOed in the Cotto fight.
-
Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
I won't try to put him in an all-time category, but no one in the sport today has that kind of chin; or at least no one I can think of. I thought Librado Andrade had a good chin!!! He takes the phrase "no pain no gain" to a higher level.
Cintron can if anything hit like a mule; and Tony laughed at him. Cotto would have made anyone in the division take a dirt nap with the barrage of punches he was landing, but Tony was acting like the punches were pesky flies stinging him. Great whiskers on Tony; he'd have to be high up on the list.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
The last guy i saw take shots of that magnitude without blinking and eye or taking a backward step , was Marvin Hagler . Margarito doesnt do anything great , but does everything well , can punch all night , and has a chin carved from granite.

Tex Cobb could take a beating; he often did:D

The beating he took off Larry Holmes made Larry Holmes vs Muhammad Ali look like a sparring session it was that bad.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
Tony has a glass jaw...............of the bullet proof variety. His punch resistance is fucking amazing, I'm sure Cotto thought he could knock him out due to all the head hunting.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
1. Oliver McCall
2. Antonio Margarito
3. The Persian Demi-God who used to harvest Kevlar by shaving his chin.

What about David Tua? Merqui Sosa? Merqui walked through storm again James Toney, and only the combinaton of Roy Jones Jr's blistering power and speed was able to drop him.
-
Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
James Toney is still obviously up there as well. Ibrigamov took both everything Felix Savon had to dish out in the amateurs and took Klitschko's and Holyfield best punches in the pros so maybe he has a special chin.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
Margarito's chin would be as good as any WW in history.

Im sure Tua was knocked out by Savon in amatuers but great chin in the pros but he was hurt a little by Lennox and Rahman.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
You've seen it folks, Margarito's chin is his mighty, indestructible defense wall...;D
-
Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
What gets me is that margarito gets stronger and stronger the more you hit him. That would be hard for any fighter to keep up with him
-
Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
Tony has an iron chin but you cant possible compare it to LaMottas or Robinsons as hes never been hit by nuclear missles and stayed up, they have. Cotto just is not a huge puncher on the elite level its become a beatdown kinda power.

But when someone called Miguel Cotto lands over 100 Flush but I mean Flush power punches to that chin and still come forward I don't care who you are that is an IRON Chin

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
I'd say Margarito's chin is phenomenal but I would say Carlos Baldomir's was better. He moved up to junior middleweight and took BOMBS off Vernon Forrest with no problem.

Re: Where does Antonio Margarito's chin rate in.......................
I wonder if Chuck Norris could make Tony feel pain?
