What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
For the record I scored the fight 98-94 for Margarito before the 11th round smash feast.
But I reckon if it had gone the distance Cotto would have won a unanimous decision. This would have been a terrible thing to happen......I was wondering if anyone knows how the judges scored it and if you had scored the fight what your score card read???
Job biscuit (Great fight which will go down has a classic)!!!!
eh eh!!

two of the judges had it 6-4 for Toni and one had it even. But what scares me is that the announcers were driving forward such an incredible campaign for Cotto it almost seemed like they were trying to prepare you for the scorecards and make you think that it could have been scored a cotto fight. I was thinking up to that point when they said what the scorecards were that If TOni had not knocked him out he would have been robbed.

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
err.. so even though Tony was ahead on TWO judges cards and level on the other - he was being set up for the "robbery?"

No, I felt that way previous to knowing the judges scorecards. Obviously not after I learned that.

I believe i had Antonio Margarito up by 2 points some of the rounds where Max Kellerman was saying Miguel Cotto dominating........
I was like what the hell are you watching ??

If Cotto doesnt go down in the 11th and it would have gone to the scores, thers's no way you can call it a robbery.
You obviously are very happy for your guy and understandably so but those early rounds were all Cotto. Yea he was fading fast and going backward but he was still landing often with much cleaner and crisper more telling shots so for you to say robbery is just ridiculous.
Tony won and he deserved it. If Cotto was evr gonna lose, I'm glad it was to a class act like Tony. That took away some of the sting for me since I'm a Margarito fan as well.

How did two judges have it 6-4 for Margarito? Talked about biased towards aggression. I hate this boxing's most important category is supposed to be clean effective punching. And regardless of the effectiveness due to Tony's chin, Miguel landed cleaner shots in rounds 1,2,3,4,5,6,9 he deserved all those rounds, though 2 and 6 could have been called in favor of Margarito just to make the fight more fair, but calling both for Margarito is BS
Judges are absolutely ridiculous these days.

Cotto should have been up 7-3 barring 3 knockdowns which was plausible there is no way Margarito should have been able to come back.

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
Before the knock downs, I had her dead even.
Two judges had Tony up so Miguel would have lost 'me thinks'

That was largely to rile people up, but I also wrote that Margarito had a very good chance of beating Cotto in another thread.

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
yes very interesting.....but I do believe even though Cotto was land more shots I think that judging the more effective punching from Margarito should have won him some of the rounds. Also I think aggression should not be over looked and should be scored more over pitty pat type fighters such has Cotto.
I think Saturday night might have showed Cotto to be an average puncher at this weight.
Job Biscuit (It was a classic boxer v's brawler match up)!!!

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
I enjoyed the fight so much that it never crossed my mind about a decision going to Cotto. However, the way HBO handled the post fight scenario I do believe it would have gone to Cotto. HBO would have gladly given us a rematch to clear the controversy. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ .
I Think Margarito felt that way too and was poised to wear down and KO Cotto ....... He repeatedly told his corner he would KO Cotto and they would ground him by telling him not to get over confident.

are you blind you had it 98-94?!!! HOw the fuck did you get that? Wow some people really have no idea how to score a fight. What fight were you watching?
-
Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
it is all about opinion and how you read a fight.....there are no clear process on what is right and what is wrong when judging a fight.......my opinion was though Cotto was dancing about and rattling off arm punches that Margarito was the one coming forward and landing the more effective punches....98-94 was my score.....if thats wrong I can't see how??
Job Biscuit (Some rounds were close and could have gone either way....I liked what Margarito was doing so I scored for him ...in my opinion)!!!
eh eh!!
-
Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
cotto was landing flurries flushly, it was margarito who at first was landing shots just on the arms and the gloves,
i had it 96-94 cotto going into the 11th but the tide had turned by that point and margarito would have won the 12th if cotto had carried on and ultimatley the fight,
you must have had a few even rounds to get 98-94 as there dont seem that many points to go round at that stage of the fight
-
Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
Yes I had 2 rnds even....couldn't separate them......I don't like given even rnds but that was my opinion at the time.....I can't take back what I judged at the time.....judging fights is what you Interpreting at that moment.....3 judges could be reading 3 totally different scores...it dosn't make it right but that is what happens....usually the judges do get it right but on Saturday I think if the fight had gone the distance Cotto would have won a close decision and there could have been an up roar regarding the scores....!!!
Job Biscuit (98-94 was a fair reflection of the fight...i think)!!!
eh eh!!

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
well two had margo up by 2 points so i cant really see how cotto could win the decision, i think alot of people including the judges focused too much on margaritos aggresion early on when to me it seemed all flash and no real substance, suppose it doesnt matter now with how it turned out.
-
Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
when I said Cotto was throwing arm puniches that was ment to indicate Cotto wasn't punching with any pop
Job Biscuit (Margarito was throwing with more pop and more conviction)!!!!
eh eh!!

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
i disagree, in my opinion he hit margarito with some of the hardest shots his thrown throughout his career, alot of welterweights would have folded under the power of some of those punches, its a testement to margaritos chin that he took them so well

Yes possibly but Margarito didn't look too red in the face after all them punches that landed from Cotto, and that would indicate Cotto wasn't putting too much pop on them punches....in the earlier rounds Cotto reminded me a little of Pretty boy with them flurries and get outta there tactics.....Margarito didn't give Cotto too much time to get the big punches in.....I might be wrong but thats what I saw
Job Biscuit (I would have to go with the big pop ratio punches to light flurries)!!!!

i think that has alot to do with margaritos skin type more so than cottos punching power, some people bruise and swell up more so than others,
for me in the early rounds i saw cotto land a lot of good shots especially the big left at the end of either the 2nd or the 3rd i think were he went to step off to the side and fired it back arcoss and margarito walked pretty much right on it and he felt it as he started smiling to show it was a good shot

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
well if cotto wer to have got up after one knocked down then went to the 12th i know cotto would of laid it all on the line and won that last round and won a majority descision or possibly a split descision
GREAT FIGHT THO

I had it pretty even maybe Margarito a point up but there was only one winner from rd7 you could see nothing Cotto did would hurt Tony and that Cotto himself wasnt going to last.

with one knockdown in the 11th it would have been 106-102 on two of the cards and 105-103 on the other so he couldnt have won it im sure

Re: What if the Cotto-Margarito went the Distance
I had Cotto up before the 11th.
And after 11th, with 1 Knockdown, possibly still 1 up, 2 knockdowns, level, possibly 1 down.
