Boxing Beginners, How long to have an advantage?

One of my nephews has a group of friends who have boxed in the basement a couple of times. I guess they have some gloves. They have only done it a couple times and none of them have trained with a heavy bag or anything.

One of his friends is always bragging about how he could easily beat my nephew. Well, my nephew and I started working with a heavy bag and doing daily workouts to try and get him in shape. We think it would be fun it my nephew got a little bit of skill and conditioning then challenged his friend and totally outclassed him. This friend, by the way, is a real jerk and is always giving my nephew flak. The 2 guys are about the same size and weight.

My question is, assuming they started as both equally bad at boxing, how long should it take of training with the heavy bag, doing boxing type workouts, sparring, watching videos, etc... How much of that should it take before he would actually get enough of an advantage to be sure of winning against his friend?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but look on the bright side, we have boxing headgear, mouthpieces, sparring gloves, etc... It's not like they are going to do something crazy... I'm sure a lot of you had basement or backyard boxing matches with your friends when you were teenagers hehe...

id think if ur nephew is training hard, doing boxing workouts... assuming the other guy is just talking junk and not working out, then after (im just throwin this out there) 2 - 4 weeks u should feel confident that he would win? im only postin this cause no one else replied, someone more experienced might be able to tell u further more details....

first of all basement or backyard boxing is dangerous and should not be done >:(

but anyway, is your your nephew being trained by a real trainer or some1 with lots of experience?
if that is the case and he trains like 4 times a week and the other guy ain't training, or training without some1 who has experience, then i would say 2 weeks and the guy gets KO'd in round2.

but on the other hand if your nephew is training without a trainer or some1 with lots of experience... than
it takes a little more time to get any decent result, IF there will be any. cuz he might just be learning bad habits, and if he is only sparring with some1 who isn't that good in boxing either than he wont be learning any thing usefull during that sparring session. at least not in a few weeks.

best sent him down to the gym for a few times to learn some basic boxing and you should go to, and then work from there....

I don't think we have any boxing gyms in my area, I will have to look. That sounds like a better course of action. It's kinda intimidating though, walking into some boxing gym a total greenie with no experience and stuff... Do they have gyms for beginners that don't need to compete but just want to start learning?

make sure they wear head gear. backyard boxing can be dangerous especially since you will be the one watching over this and are admittedly green.

also even though boxing is a lot better fighting style then just fighting with no training. your nephew fights(and all untrained fighters) with natural instinct and he is more used to this than boxing. so when he starts to box he wont feel like he can fight any better until he reaches a certain level. so it will take a few weeks before he will win.

Well here's the deal, my nephew can't afford a boxing gym membership even if there was one nearby, and I am pretty sure there aren't any except downtown which is like an hour drive away. So there's no way he would go to a boxing gym.

Also he says he's gonna box his friend no matter what I say. I don't think I can change his mind so what I did is I bought 2 headgear that are the kind with a cage over the face so you don't actually get hit in the nose or mouth. They seemed the most protective type of headgear. Kinda expensive but I was worried he would get hurt.

Anyways I can't convince him not to do it but at least I got him to agree to wear these headgear and mouth guards and to at least train a while before he tries it, so that's gotta be better than nothing. Also, I am by no means a trainer but at least I can point out some really obvious things he is doing wrong. It would be nice if I could get with a real trainer and learn some stuff and relay that information to my nephew, it's gotta be better than nothing. When he's older and able to get a better job maybe he can get a real trainer, right now he never has any money.

Yeah he's 16 and he had to take summer school and wasn't able to get a good job this summer. The little money he does make is spent paying off debt because he had to borrow money from his parents to fix his car. That and gas prices eat all of his money. He's hoping to find a job where he can make enough money to afford a gym membership maybe next year or something.

im in ur same situation trust me its fine.... just put something in ur mouth like i heard lemon wedges work good for a mouth protecter. u dont need the helmets unless ur a pussy.

hey. you can do it through hard work too. i dont have a gym nearby, i bought the stuff myself and set it up in my basement. i taught myself basically everything i know boxing through hard work. not to be cocky, it can be done like this but you dont meet many 18 year olds like me. well at least i havent.

dude educate yourself. you admit your a new boxer in anothe topic but you apparently have done the research on boxing without headgear for newbies and dtermined it to be safe. i am sure you took the same ideas to other parts of your life and thats why your this dumb.

do some research and watch boxing, you'll learn there is a reason why most fighters start out as amateurs and then when they are pros and spar they were headgear.

I am sure people have died from it, there are lots of cases of people getting brain damage.
I have done it before, but i know what i am doing. if you have never boxed you will not do well.

you are telling people to help you and when they do you say they dont know anything even though you say your new to this.

Its kinda weird listhen to people talk about deaths in sport, its a true fact that people have died from playing chess. I think headgear is a false sense of security, you take more hits because you think you are safe, but with some people i dont think they'd jump into the ring without it. With backyard boxing or anything its kinda stupid and sounds poofta as but you need to know what to do if one of them gets knocked out, takes liver shot, chokes on their mouthpiece( it does happen surprisingly)

well make sure he learns the basics of boxing, i had a similar situation. boxed with some friends in my garage :p i worked off the jab and got his nose to bleed a little, so i won. his friend would probably try and throw most, if not only, big hits. so he should work on his reflexes and reaction time, then going in and countering. he'll have the advantage probably by 3-4 weeks, since he'll be able to read the big punches, but nothin fancy, just basics and he could definitely kick that kids ass.
