We all hear rumours of 'so-and-so' knocked cold by their sparring partners.
So anyone know of any high profile boxers who actually were? Ok, 'allegedly' were?
Facts would be better but lets hear a few of them rumours...

I remember Oliver Mccall saying he once knocked down Tyson when they use to spar
McCall stated in an interview they decked each other 5 times each in their sparring, over the years.Quote:

Right, here is a little story.
I once worked with a great old trainer, in the 80's for about 3 weeks. We got on very very well together and we used to spend hours talking, he told me a story which left me gob smacked.
He was in a detroit gym working with fighters when Ray Robinson came in, he was asking for sparring. At that time Robinson was the world welterweight champion, there was this certain chap who was sweeping the gym floor at the time and they asked him to spar with Robinson. He agreed and during the spar Ray started getting heavy, and the guy who was sweeping the floor sparked Robinson out.
At this I was transfixed, then he went on to tell me that about 6 months later Ray came back into the gym and asked to spar with the same person. The guy who was sat down at the time reading at the back of the gym agreed to get back in the ring with Him. Once again, Ray tried to beat the guy up, and again the gym sweeper sparked him right out, the old trainer told me they thought the sweeper had killed Ray, he didnt move for nearly ten minutes.
I swear this story is true on my fathers grave.
There is a saying in America, that people who sweep gym floors can knock people out, I believe this story is where this saying came from.
Believe me, this old trainer was one of the straightest guys in boxing.
I will give you ten guesses on who the gym sweeper was....
great storyQuote:

Not telling you just yet, think about the era.
As for Eubank, if you could have seen some of the good hidings he has had in the gym, he has to be one of the hardest human beings I have ever seen, he is also one hell of a man.
Tell us more..?Quote:

I would be interested to hear more about those sessions between Sonny and George.Quote:

Sounds like a proper fairy tail. Entertaining though
Stick
I dont believe in Fairies.
And he wasnt the only guy there, it was kept quiet.
Rumour has it one particular guy who was with the mob at the time is writing a book which should be out in a few months, it will blow lids of lots of things outsiders wouldnt and didnt know.
Some other tales have depressed even me, I know one guy who was going to do an expose and within two days he told me his life had been threatened and he had been attacked, and warned off.
He dropped the idea like a ton of bricks. Some of the info he had would have blown your fairies out the window.
the world famous writer. :) not a big scalp 8)Quote:

Bernard Dunne is who you are referring to. not sure about the story thoughQuote:

no man he changes up sparring partners, one will get 4 minutes or so and then another will jump right in and Floyd will keep going. Not many people train like Floyd.Quote:

And I doubt it happened anyway. Even if it did if he and Diamond fought I can't see any way that Diamond could win, he'd get brutalized IMO. Only two fighters with a real chance at Floyd right now IMO are Hatton and Judah.
Nice story, good tale by your trainer.Quote:

During SRR's reign as 147 World champ (1946-1950), Burley was fighting the last 4 years of his 14 year career (1936-50). I do not think he would be sweeping Gym floors in Detroit. ;)
A-ha, :detective: a glitch in the story....Quote:

As I say, over a period of weeks we did alot of talking and the conversation got around to great fighters. He asked me my opinion and I reeled off four of the best fighters that I had seen. The only time I'd seen Burley was during a fight with a guy called Smith who was a light heavyweight nearing the end of his career and what I had read of him and the old guy started laughing and told me that he was one of the main people who had had him inducted into the hall of fame. Also he was probably pound for pound the best fighter he had ever seen in his lifetime.
Now there are a few clues for you

LOL
just cause he was sweeping the floor didnt mean he was poor ...he may have just been at the gym when he desided yo help out?...i swept floors in my gym
eubank swept the floors at his gym becuase he couldnt afford the cost of goin to the gym so he thought it was an easy way of gettin in and they eventually let him have a go for free
Is this Eddie Futch's story about Charley and SRR? Sugar Ray fought on the same card as Charley earlier so he definitely knew who he was. The met in the early 40s. Charley spend most of those days in Cali then back in Pittsburgh. How he and a NYer would meet up twice in Detriot is hard to call. Charley never mentioned sparring SRR and he reportedly very honest and straightforward. I think the story is suspect.
Well, all I can say is like I have already said, I met and spent time with this man and had many hours of great boxing stories from him. I personally believe the story, I cant see why he would make it up, I got to know him quite well, he even invited me to go and work with him over there. I turned him down, one regret I will always have.
I had 4 or 5 up and coming champs of my own at the time and choices had to be made, I chose to stay with my lads, turned out well.
