Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
Roach trained Oscar for the biggest fight in boxing history, he had Oscar in there training with Shane Mosley, and a number of other talented sparring partners. I am sure he learnt a lot about how Oscar fights, and he definitely respected Oscar's abilities. My question is this, why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight Oscar if he thought Manny would be obliterated. Neither Manny nor Roach need the money, Roach is not a stupid coach, and Pacquaio isn't a stupid fighter. Obviously both of them see something we all don't. Personally I can't really see Manny winning this, but knowing that both these two think so, something must be up. I didn't think Hopkins stood a chance against Tarver. I wasn't sure if Mayweather would be able to fight Oscar at 154 when he was fighting at 140, and still being way smaller than his 140 pound opponents(however once Mayweather fought at WW I was sure he would win). I wasn't sure how James Toney would do as a cruiserweight or heavyweight.
Could this be Liston-Patterson? Definitely, is it likely? In my eyes yes, but once again not in the eyes of the guy who has spent more time then any of us with both fighter, that is Freddy Roach.

Just for MONEY, Roach and PAC knows they don't stand a chance but a 10-20 million paycheck is definitely good for early retirement for both PAC and Freddie. If they do think they stand a chance then they're deliririous. After this destruction of PAC I don't see him winning any major fights in the future we might consider this his last fight.

Re: Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
Taken from some of my post at ESB:
Boxing People who think PAC can defeat DelaHoya
Manny Pacquiao, no. 1 P4P boxer - "I can beat Dela Hoya"
James Toney, top heavyweight boxer - "Manny has skills, Pacquiao will knockout Dela Hoya with his power"
Larry Merchant, HBO Commentator - "Manny has a puncher's chance"
Samson Lewkowicz, International boxing matchmaker - "Pacquiao and Dela Hoya is a very intriguing fight. Even if he (Pacquiao) is small he has a good chance of winning"
Freddie Roach, well respected boxing trainer - "De La Hoya was slow, can’t pull the trigger and will be knocked out (by Pacquiao)"
Jacko, ESB Forum Member - "If the fight is at 150 then DLH beat's Manny but if it's at 147 i do believe Manny stand's a chance."
Pharaoh, ESB Forum VIP - "I think he (Pacquiao) has a decent shot"
PacDbest, ESB Champion (recently banned tho) - "Pac will Dominate DLH"

So you picked those small time boxing forum posters like you and conveniently omit the opinions of well known boxing personalities? More or less they have the same opinion. They're giving PAC a chance to defeat Hoya...

Why would you quote posters from a garbage site and try to past them off as meaningful? There not.

I can consider your own personal opinion at par with Merchant but not better... Each man's opinion will be considered equal...

Re: Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
I still think Roach and Pacquaio are in this for more than the money, you can say Mayweather is in boxing for the money, you can say Hopkins, Pavlik, etc. is, you can say almost anyone in boxing is, but Pacquaio is the guy who fought everyone, EVERYONE. Same with Oscar... they would not have this fight because of money alone... OScar didn't fight Mayweather for the bills these guys don't need it. These two have always chased glory, and I believe Oscar sees the legitimacy of Pacquaio, and Manny sees it in himself.
Also people can't say Freddie Roach's comments are just a guy overhyping his fighter, THEY WERE BOTH HIS FIGHTER at one point which means he has a more valid opinion on this than any of us.
-
Re: Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
Oscar = $$$$
They are in this fight for the biggest money maker of both their careers(Pac and Roach).
As for his chances. I remember when Roy Jones was dominating the LHW division to such a point he was playing basketball on the morning of fights to give his opponents a chance of winning (there was still no chance). Although he has only fought there once Pacquiaos performance at lightweight reminded me of the Jones LHW era, Diaz, a good fighter in his own right had absolutely no chance and Pac seemed invincible (just like Jones). That was when people started calling for Jones to take up a challenge and move upto heavyweight which he did and comfortably won the WBA title off Ruiz. I know Oscar is a far better fighter (p4p) than Ruiz and I would bet on Oscar beating Pac but to totally write off Pacs chances of beating Oscar is unfair, he is seriously talented, younger and faster than Oscar.
Yeah he gives up a lot in natural size, reach and power but these things are not everything. Oscar did not look brilliant in his last outing against former SUPERFEATHERWEIGHT Steve Forbes and Pac is far better than Forbes.
I cannot see Pac having the power to knock Oscar out but he stands a chance if he can get in hit Oscar with a couple of shots then get back out and stay on his bike.
-
Re: Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
I dont think Pacquioa will win but I think he stands a much better chance than people give him credit for here.
Do i think Manny will be knocked out?
Nope!
Oscar UD 12
-
Re: Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
That said fighting Oscar will give Manny more recoqnition in the states as the number 1 boxer on the planet, if he manages to beat Oscar the possibilities are endless. Marketing wise anyway.
-
Re: Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
I really don't think Pacquiaio will get killed by Oscar, I mean cmon guys did you not watch his 12 round borefest over Steve Forbes, a guy barely any bigger than Pacquiao.
Manny has the speed and footwork to stay elusive and give Oscar some problems. I'd see Oscar as the favourite but he's not a real physical fighter and probably wouldn't try and knock Pacquaio out.
The far bigger problem for me in this is that if the two did fight, it would doubtless mean that Oscar would try and enter in negotiation with Pacquaio for future fight promotions.
Honestly I wouldn't put it past Oscar to go easy on Pac, or even take a bodyshot and get knocked out if it meant he could then have Pacquiao's signature for the rest of his career.
It's all coming together now, Oscar buys the Ring Magazine, Oscar inks Pacquaio, the Ring Magazine becomes the official supporter of the Pacman and helps, along with his victory over Oscar to become a boxing phenonemon, i.e a golden goose for Oscar that he will make millions from over the next couple years.
If the fight happens, I guruantee it means Oscar will promote Manny in future, and that also guarantees that Oscar will not attempt to make Manny look bad.
The fight will be an awful fix, dpending on how much money is involved Oscar may even take another dive.
Shameful, fuck Oscar De La Hoya.
-
Re: Why would Roach allow Pacquaio to fight this fight?
bilbo: i would rather see pac lose then have his oppenent take a dive. if ever the philippines find out pac had one of his oppenent take a dive. Pac would never be able to come back in the country and his dream of being a politician will never happen.
if this fight happens, i really believe oscar will be less trouble then jmm but the size factor is the only thing stopping pac from ktfo oscar. pac too fast too slick too good right now for dela hoya.
-

Well I'd rather see ODLH take a dive than him killing PAC. Stains PAC's legacy though. Not a farfetched idea Bilbo;)

Sorry to tell but I don't think Hatton has a Chance at all. How much money you willing to bet on Hatton? My advice don't put too much coz I Predicted Pac will just dominate Hatton. I Said this way before there's even talk of DLH-Pac fight. What more after we saw how Great Pac was at 142 lbs?

DLH couldn't even pull the trigger anymore when he fought Sturm, who got completely screwed out of the decision.
After Pac annihilates Hatton, the fight to be made is Pac v. Mayweather.
Although Mayweather is one of the most talented fighters I've ever seen, I'd love to see that piece of shit thug taste the canvas for an hour.
