Haye to announce heavyweight test
By Ben Carey
David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye’s eagerly-awaited “heavyweight debut” will be officially announced tomorrow at Greenwich’s magnificent O2 Arena, according to Hayemaker’s latest press release. To be slightly pedantic, Haye has already made his heavyweight debut, when he impressively trounced Tomasz Bonin inside a round last April.
The Hayemaker subsequently returned to the cruiserweight division to register standout stoppage wins over Jean Marc Mormeck (TKO 7) and Enzo Maccarinelli (TKO 2) as he romped to the WBA, WBC and WBO cruiserweight titles.
The Hayemaker Boxing press conference – open to both the press and any members of the public wishing to attend – will commence from 11.30 AM. Present at the conference will be former undisputed world cruiserweight champion David Haye, as well as head Hayemaker honchos Adam Booth and David Coldwell.
The identity of Haye’s opponent is currently a mystery but the shortlist could include Oleg Maskaev, Kali Meehan, Hasim Rahman, James Toney and Monte Barrett. Haye is already ranked at 5 by the WBC and 3 by the WBO and is hoping to land a shot at reigning IBF and WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko by next summer.
Haye’s heavyweight curtain raiser will be screened live and exclusively by Setanta Sports and will mark the second of Hayemaker Boxing’s 2008 promotions. The inaugural promotion arrives on September 20 in Sheffield, when Ryan Rhodes headlines ‘The Rhodes-show’ in a defence of his British light-middleweight title against Scotland’s Jamie Coyle. An intriguing chief support contest sees the pairing of featherweight contenders and Hayemaker team-mates Derry Mathews and Martin Lindsay in a British title eliminator.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
Now he finally he can let his skills do the talking.
Mind you I bet there will be some rubbishing his choice of opponent.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
Cant see it being Toney to much risk of looking stupid there, we know Toney has a chin of iron.
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
I dont think its Toney but I hope Im wrong. Even an old Toney can play games with Haye.
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
It's going to be Danny Williams, Scott Gamer, or Robert Wiggins

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
I met Haye today and asked him myself. He said they are close to reaching a deal with Rahman or Maskaev.

Well if he wanted an opponent to look good and fast against he's chosen right.
I think he'll beat Rahman, he's a fat bloated mess these days who couldn't even beat Zuri Lawrence convincingly.
At least Maskaev still has some passion and will test Haye.
I'd like to see the Maskaev fight actually, I really think Oleg could knock Haye out in the middle rounds. Of course I would love to see this, being a sad, petty, jealous pale little man who hates everything David Haye, with his buff body, confidence, charisma, and playboy lifestyle represents.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
His whole Heavyweight careeer rests on his chin and if it can take a shot from a full blown Heavy!!
Rahman may be fat but he can bang and haye needs to get ready for what is coming his way!
This could well be over before it begains, hope i'm wrong but we'll see soon enough!

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
Kali Meehan Number 1 choice in my opinion...will be blown away in quick fashion
Hasim Rahman, Maybe a good choice.....ex champ would look good on record...but at what risk
James Toney, bad opponent and this could be a ugly win if it was made
Monte Barrett, maybe a live opponent and big risk for little reward
Job Biscuit (Meehan would be my choice out of these)!!!
eh eh!!
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
So whos the odds on then ?
Out of that list I hope its Rahman. Toney would be my last pick cuz even at this stage he still has teh ability to mess Haye around and make him look bad . If David wants to make an emphatic statment then he needs someone with a glass jaw and whos well known . Rahman fits that criteria
Meehan has been blasted away by Danny Williams in a round so Haye cant better than . Maskaev is pretty rough and Haye doesnt wana wrestling match . Barret isnt a former champ so I think Rahman is defo the one to go for and I think Haye wins that pretty easily in spectacular fashion .

IMO Barrett would be te one, i think Haye could spark him, hes been knocked out before and i think it would be a good fight.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
it will probably be somebody he can beat badly so it can lead and hype up to a waldimir fight
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
Rahman/Maskaev are good first opponents that Haye could test himself save in the knowledge he could stop them where necessary.
Barret would make and ideal second opponent.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
I still think Jameel McCline is the perfect choice. He's a big guy, he's not a consistent puncher (he didn't bother Wlad but he really hurt Sam Peter), he's got a decent defense, and he has fought the top level heavyweights so Haye could then compare how he does to those guys.
I won't complain about Rahman or Maskaev....good solid choices there.

Bit of an anti climax really, same site has now posted this article:
Haye press conference shelved after opponent pulls out
By Ben Carey
Fans eagerly awaiting to learn the identify of David Haye’s heavyweight opponent will have to wait a little longer. Unfortunately tomorrow’s (September 3rd) Hayemaker Boxing press conference at the O2 Arena has been postponed. It’s likely to be re-scheduled for September 16.
In a brief statement, Hayemaker Boxing said: “We were hoping to announce David Haye’s first heavyweight opponent tomorrow but, in a surprise to everyone, the opponent with whom we had a verbal agreement decided to pull out of the fight late last night. That u-turn left everyone in limbo and David and Adam (Booth) decided it wasn’t worth merely announcing the date and venue tomorrow. We plan to send out a press release further explaining the reasons for the cancellation before tomorrow morning.”

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
I remember a time when embarking on a professional heavyweight career actually involved FIGHTING someone to make a name for yourself. Didn't realise all you had to do was call press conferences to talk shit about other fighters.
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
That sucks, I was looking forward to seeing who is next opponent was going to be. My think he will probably end up fighting Rahman.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
He hasnt even started his heavy campaign yet and hes already a dissapointment;D
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
to be fair its not his fault that hsi opponent pulls out is it.
Anyone else feel this step up to heavyweight seems doomed?
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
It is his fault, he has started up his own promotional company and announces a fight before any contracts are signed, its backfired on him and now he looks an amature in the business end.
Why was he making a big press conferenjce when the fight wasnt even signed?
This is a sign of how his heavy career is going to go, unprofessional, that Adam Booth character would be to blame for it as well, he doesnt sem too clued up;D

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
Rahman's shot, he looked freaking horrible against Toney last time. That would be an easy win. Maskaev is more difficult and I could more easily imagine Haye getting caught but he's slow and doesn't exactly have a rock for a chin. The last thing Haye should do is pick some plodder with a boring style and a tough chin.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
;Di dont care who it is im just ready yo see him rip apart somebody so he can take out waldimir

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
Keep on dreaming
I bet Haye is trying to pull the 300+ pound Shannon Briggs out of retirement

You know what's funny about that? Briggs would be a very dangerous opponent. Briggs is probably the hardest puncher in the division right now. Unfortunately for him that's if everyone was only allowed one punch. But Briggs, even being well over 250lbs, is a very good counterpuncher. Remember how he shut Liakhovich's game down with the counter left hook? Considering how Haye hangs his chin out and the fact that Briggs' chin is actually pretty decent (out of his 5 losses, he only has been kayoed 2 times- 1 time to Lennox Lewis and the other he just got caught while flailing punches against Darroll Wilson in his first loss). On paper Briggs looks like a great opponent to showcase against, but in actuality Briggs is a much taller order than Haye might be able to handle.

I 1,000,000% disagree with your assesment that Briggs is the hardest puncher...we all know Wlad can KO anyone at any time.....I thin Briggs IN SHAPE at maybe 260 is a tough fight for Haye as Shannon can take a shot and give a good one in return but he's not a tough fight for Haye once Haye learns to box. HOWEVER if Haye learns to box he's still introuble with Wladimir.
Briggs has no heart anymore (as if he had one to begin with) and I mentioned his name in disgust. A fight vs Maskaev or Rahman would mean more for Haye. I think a fight vs Golota would mean more than a win over Briggs

What about Ibragimov and Peter?
Against the top guys Wladimir never takes enough risk to KO anyone.
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
He should fight Ibragimov. If he could KO him then that would hype up a Wlad fight. Also, he should of tried to fight Lamon Brewster or even Sergei Liakhovich.

Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
With this short notice he will end up fighting this dark horse Breidis Prescott and he will be coming of a massive upset win against Kahn after all;D
Dont leave him long to gain 4 an a half stone though, he'll have to take Danny Williams on as a nutritionist;D
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
ibragimov would DESTROY haye
-
Re: David Haye to announce next HW opponent tomorrow at O2 Arena
Although I dont like or rate Haye, if Ibragimov ran from a relatively harmless old Holyfield..............................
