Oscar De la Hoya Enlists Nacho Beristain As Trainer For His Showdown With Pacquiao
Press Release
9/23/2008
LOS ANGELES, September 23 – With a little over two months to go before his epic showdown with Manny Pacquiao on December 6th at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Oscar de la Hoya has made perhaps the most important decision of his career, bringing in trainer of champions, the legendary Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain, to prepare him for the attack of the “Pac-Man”.
“Nacho Beristain is a great trainer who I have respected for many years and I’m honored to have him in my corner,” said De La Hoya. “In addition to his great tactical mind and considering that he prepared Juan Manuel Marquez for two fights against Manny Pacquiao, he knows him very well. I’m confident that with Nacho’s gameplan and my execution, we’ll be victorious on December 6th.”
“Oscar de la Hoya is one of the premier fighters of this era and I am excited about working with him for this very important fight,” said Beristain. “I already have a plan in mind for beating Pacquiao and I know Oscar will do whatever it takes to carry that plan through on fight night.”
A member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Beristain is widely considered to be one of the best trainers to ever come out of Mexico. The man in the corner of world champions Ricardo “Finito” Lopez, Gilberto Roman, Daniel “Chato” Zaragoza, Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez, Melchor Cob Castro, Beristain may be best known for his work with current superstars Juan Manuel Marquez and his brother Rafael Marquez. Now he will lead “The Golden Boy” into one of the biggest fights of his life.

Re: Oscar De la Hoya Enlists Nacho Beristain As Trainer For His Showdown With Pacquia
Good move but at this stage of DLH's career there won't be much Beristain will change apart from strategy. More of a mind game thing IMO.

Re: Oscar De la Hoya Enlists Nacho Beristain As Trainer For His Showdown With Pacquia
Maybe an indication that DelaHoya is not under estimating the PACMAN by getting a very good trainer for this fight...
Floyd Sr. said that whoever trains DelaHoya, Hoya still wins over PAC... I guess Oscar is not buying what Floyd Sr. stated...
But I think Team Pacquiao still has the edge in the battle of the trainers even if Beristain is with Team Hoya... Roach having trained Hoya in the past is an advantage for Team PAC...
.

... for the trainers, as for the boxers, it's generally accepted that PAC has the speed and stamina advantages over Hoya...

I think Manny Pacquiao has got more chance of getting shit out of a rocking horse, than winning this fight.

Well it's expected that PAC will lose this fight (I give him 50% chance of winning) but still many people not totally writing off PAC's chances...
If you're a knowledgeable boxing fan, you knew pretty well that anything can happen in boxing...

Wherever you go, poll results will look the same... The general public, the casual boxing fans think that PAC will KO Hoya... You have to start to live with that...

Well aside from giving him great pointers during the fight and some type of strategy that's about all he can bring.
Everything else is up to ODLH.

Beristain beating Pac twice (with Marquez) may be an advantage for Oscar. Add to that the fact that he seems to have more advantages than Marquez (reach, power, weight, etc.).

Can you live with this comment from the great Panamanian boxer, Roberto Duran?
"I am leaning toward Pacquiao. I like De La Hoya, he has been a great fighter ... But he has not been very active in recent years. Pacquiao has been extremely active. It seems like he is always training and fighting."

at least 40% of the 18,388 people who voted for Pac to win will be suffering with us. that's 7, 355.2 people. LOL.
If pac wins, there will be great rejoicing in the Philippines and I will come back here with a very low result in the prediction contest coz I will be voting for OLDH to win by UD(or TKO, depending on Pac's conditioning). But i can assure you that I will be humble with Pac's victory like in the past. .... and you however, will still be coming here to discount any achievement Pac has done..... of course, that's the way losers act and think.

In boxing anything can happen and it's really foolish to totally write off one boxers' chances...

If you are really knowledgeable about boxing (as what you claimed), you should not make comments like that for it will only make you look foolish...
Some boxing greats were picking Pacquiao while others picked Hoya (and they're not writing off PAC's chances)... But you giving PAC no chance at all? It's laughable... ;D

Funny how you wind people up but can't handle it back ;D
And one last thing even if i had a coma right now, then woke up 2 weeks later and had forgotten half of the boxing i know right now, i would still know much more than you, don't punch above your weight because your lose big time, my little deluded Pac fan ;)
If you are really knowledgeable about boxing (as what you claimed), you should not make comments like that for it will only make you look foolish...
Some boxing greats were picking Pacquiao while others picked Hoya (and they're not writing off PAC's chances)... But you giving PAC no chance at all? It's laughable... ;D
.
What is laughable is that you clearly can't take anything with a pinch of salt when you yourself have wound up Marquez fans constantly, all of my comments on this topic have been sarcastic and im just having bit of fun, you took it too serious even when i told you this, hence why this has gotten a tad heated............
If you want my honest opinion i don't think Manny Pacquiao has much of chance, even though he is a great fighter. His speed will be his only advantage but even that will slow quite a bit with him moving up in weight. And his power will be much less effective because he won't dent iron chinned ODLH at Welterweight, ODLH is far too big and strong. For little Manny Pacquiao, this match up was considered a joke last year i don't know why some people are considering it to be a good match up now...........
ODLH has some stamina issues but do you really think Manny Pacquiao, will be able to come forward and really test those issues ? because IMO if Manny Pacquiao has any chance of winning he will have to fight on the backfoot where he will be even less effective, because he is a much better fighter at coming forward than he is on the backfoot........
Plus even if Manny Pacquiao averaged at 146 for his last fight which will be close to his limit for the ODLH fight, how much do you think ODLH will average ? he was one stone heavier than Floyd Mayweather at 154, so ODLH will easily average 160 or close to it for his fight with Manny Pacquiao, which sounds like disaster for Manny Pacquiao to me.

:appl: Good analysis...
As what I thought, you don't really need to resort to "rocking horse" tactic or calling great boxers "punch drunk" in order to drive your point... ;D

I was thinking the other day, if Mayorga connected ODLH with some nice clean uppercuts and straight rights to his jaw and chin without really hurting him, what can we expect from Pac? Unless Pac has more punching power than Mayorga.
The casual fan doesn’t see the weight difference here so it doesn't surprise me to see all those polls with people voting that Pac will completely annihilate Oscar. Let's see what happens. In boxing there's always the element of surprise.
