I can't post the link but rumour has it Andre Berto is moving down to 140, to possibly get a fight with Paulie.
Firstly how the hell is Berto gonna get down to 140 ? when he has fought as high as a Jr Middleweight ? and secondly why does he want move down to 140 anyway ?
Well, I don't know the validity of the statement, but if he COULD get down to 140 it's a division he would dominate. There is very little chance he could be lineal WW champ anytime in the near future. I am interested to see if this is true, because I see very little body fat on him now, can't imagine him making 140 very easily.Quote:

I think they're trying to protect Berto. They don't want to put him in the ring with any of the big boys just yet. Fighting Paulie would put another name on his record without putting Berto in danger.
Its a much better division for him, can't see him beating Williams, Mayorga or Cotto really.
He doesn't look like a huge welter to me. If he could make it comfortably it would be a good decision.
140 is weaker than 147 so (if true) he doesnt fancy the other champions at 147.
If this rumour is true, and chances are it isn't, BUT...
He should develope himself in the division he's already in. Who cares if HBO won't telecast some of his fights, they will get back to him when he's prospered.
But boxing's boxers are just as bad as promoters, they want money and the center stage.
I for one think he can take out Paul Williams right now, BUT he should continue to develope his skills and relaxation inside the ring, so he'll DEFINITELY be ready for anyone in the ropes.
The story is from Dan Rafael's notebook today at ESPN.COM/Boxing. Bertos promoter said that he would willing to go to 140 for the right fights. Berto weighed in his last fight at 143.
Bad move if true, bigger and better fights at Welter.

Well I would think there's not much going on down there at 140; and really want to see how much noise he can truly make at WW. But if he can/does move down to 140 it will be like putting a pit bull in a henhouse.
Well if he can become undisputed champ at Light Welter then I suppose he could move back to Welter for mega paydays. Maybe it's a smart move afterall thinking about it some more:-\Quote:

Really odd,He was basically a Jr.Middle at first,Then Welter and now entertains Jr.welter prospects.Usually the other way around as you age.It really is two different worlds and at this point,I cannot pick him over Williams,Margarito,Cotto,Clottey.....but he will be forced to step up competition as exposure increases,The man is a "World Champion" after all. How about this... Bradley is leaving 140 and moving down to 135... Bradley likes to join PAC, Campbell, Guzman, JMM, David Diaz, Juan Diaz, Katsidis, Barrera, Morales, etc. at 135... ;D

Well if he can make 140 I'd say its a smart move. I wish Zab would move down to 140 as well.
As I see it Berto hasn't shown me anything that makes me think he's ready for the big welters like Williams, Margarito and Cotto.
I don't actually see all the potential in him that some others see.
But at 140 he could certainly be dominant. He'd be huge at the weight and really strong, which matched with his hand speed would make him the best fighter in that division imo.
I actually think 140 could be a decent division if the fighters who belonged there actually fought there.
Berto is I understand only 5 ft 6 so 140 SHOULD be his natural weight class.
Zab Judah should definitely be at 140, as should Steve Forbes.
If the three of them moved down it would certainly liven up the 140 weight class and to be honest wouldn't really weaken the 147 class as none of them are top tier material imo anyway.

As his promoter says, he makes 147 too easily. Given both that and his height then imo he should be fighting at 140. Isn't the whole point of boxing being able to get down to the lowest possible weight in order to maximise your attributes?
Berto should move to 140 and dominate. He always has the option to move back up...

It's probably not even his choice, I think his manager or promoter realizes he won't be able to beat Margarito for awhile, and wants to create some hype by making him the champion of a division, that being I think they should have more faith in him, he will do very well in the WW division.
I'm sure you know more about his ability and potential than his promoters and trainers. You're a boxing genius. Berto has still yet to beat a single good quality true WW. He's been very carefully matched. He has the potential to be a special fighter, but if he can make 140, by all means he should do it. There is no way he's going to be the top man at WW in the next two years, but he might be able to be the top man at 140 in that time frame.Quote:

Williams is the LAST guy in that division I could see Berto beating. He's only like 5'6" or 5'7" with short arms; I think Williams beats him decisively. On the other hand, I think with a little more seasoning he could have a solid chance against Cotto, but Williams and Margarito are too big for him. If Berto can actually make 140, it wouldn't be a bad move for the right fights. Problem is, there aren't many big money guys at 140 besides Hatton. If Paulie beats Hatton, that fight could generate a nice pay day for him and would be an easy fight to make since DiBella promotes both of them. Money wise, his best bet is to stay at 147, but they need to match him carefully because he has some physical limitations for that division (height and short arms).Quote:
