Jimmy Young wasn't actually that good in the Muhammad Ali fight, nor was Muhammad Ali, but Jimmy Young did deserve the decision against Muhammad Ali.
He fought great against George Foreman and comeback from a bad round 7, to knockdown big George Foreman down on the last round with a mixture of great boxing from Jimmy Young, mixed in with a bit of aggression great performance.

Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
John Mugabi in the Hagler fight...Yeah he lost but he gave it too Marvin like no one else and 95% of the other guys out there would have folded from the exchanges long before Mugabi did
Iran Barkley in his 1st fight against Hearns....

Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Zahir Raheem, looked pretty spectacular against Morrales.
-
Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Despite being robbed Armando Muniz fought like an animal vs. "Mantequilla" Napoles in their 1st fight...
Rubin Carter sparking out Emile in 1 round...
Vilomar Fernandez was great for 1 night vs. Alexis.
Laing was great for 1 night vs. Duran.

It's pretty incredible when you compare that to his fight with Popo.
-
Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Cliff Couser over Monte Barret
Sprott over Harrison.
-
Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Im re-thinking this one but how about Frankie Randall. So sporadic, but when he was on......mainly on that night he honed ALL his skills and boxed his arse off Vs. JCC in the first fight. What a gameplan and looked IMO,absolutly great.Turmoil, some created by his demons, vices and lack of focus would not see him preform at that top notch level again. On that night,He lived up to his nickname,The surgeon.

Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Akinobu Hiranaka anihilated "El Chapo" in 1 round but that was about it...
-

Phillips early on showed quality and just an all out fighter.Had personal flaw's and Skin like rice paper, over reliant booming right hand which got him hit but made for many great scraps.

Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
I talked about this fight the other night...
John M. Johnson paced himself well in the rematch with Junior Jones and beat him.
How about Willy Salazar hitting the lotto when he sparked out "Kid Dynamite" Romero...
Seguei vs. Lamon... Serguei showed tremendous heart and fought like a wolf. But WTF happened to him?
Baldomir busting up Zab...

Terron Millett over Vince Phillips would of been a better pick. Ivan Hernandez over Mark Johnson I'm watching right now. It fits. Hernandez ain't done shiit since

Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Somsak Sithchatchawal and Mahyar Monshipour in their fight.
Henry cooper putting down Ali. He still lost, but by dropping him it made ali a little more human
-
Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Douglas is obviously the first guy that comes to mind.
Raheem is a good one too.
Travis Simms?
-
Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Jimmy Young one good Fighter, make no mistake. ;D
-
Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Riddick Bowe vs Holyfield 1. He had other good nights, but on that night, he could have beaten just about anybody.
Mickey Ward in the first Gatti fight.
-
Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Shavers against Norton.
Schmelling against Louis.

Yeah I was gonna say that 1 . He had it all that nigt . Speed , movement, boxing ability and abit of pop in his punches
Id say Bowe was another 1. He looked great for one night only vs Evander the 1st time but never quite reached those heights again .

You could argue that he had two great nights against Ali and Foreman although I had not watched either fight.

He never had a great night against Muhammad Ali both men didn't fight too well, especially Muhammad Ali who was very out of shape at 230+ pounds. But Young deserved the nod against Ali though no question IMO.
But Jimmy Young fought a great fight against George Foreman no question, he got badly hurt in the 7th round and comeback to floor Foreman in the last round.

Jimmy Young was great in that fight. Fought off the back foot superb.
I`ll upload if you like. Make no mistake as old as Ali was he still took some beating and Young was fire that night in 76.
TBH as good if not better than beating an unintrested out of shape Foreman.

Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Danny Romero over Johnny Tapia.
Lamon Brewster over Golota and Klitschko.

Re: Fighters who were great for only one fight?
Supprised nobody has mentioned Randy Turpin.
His win over Sugar Ray Robinson is proboly the best win for any British fight of all time.
