Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
Normally fans regard slick or defensive fighters as not tough, but what slick fighters can you remember being tough ?
James Toney
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Pernell Whitaker
Are a few that come to mind.

Excellent choice with Hopkins

Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
Mark Johnson, coming up very slick but not afraid to war.The way he went out vs. Jhonny Gonzalez, not reflective of career.

Agreed, on Ray Leonard, he was definitely tough. He had to be to go toe to toe with Duran for 15 rounds, giving Duran all he could handle.
Leonard could definitely take a good punch. He also had the ability to raise the level of his game when the going got tough, as in the first fight against Hearns, and also against Donny Lalonde, where leonard was hurt and came back strong to score a crushing knockout.

Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
I think Chris Byrd was slick and tough.....though when he debuted I detested him
-
Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
Jimmy Young ? he did go the distance with Shavers, Ali, Foreman, and deserved to beat Shavers in the rematch and Ali.
-
Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
Chris Byrd until old age got him

yeah, he was a really talented guy
Hopkins and Toney are obvious ones, at least as far as recent fighters go.
Surprised Joel Casamayor hasn't gotten a mention honestly.
-
Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
A couple of other guys not getting mentions
JMM, not the hardest guy to hit but very skilled, very tough
Gerry Penalosa, really skilled guy, good chin, toughness

Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
Meldrick Taylor
Buddy Mcgirt
-
Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
Meldrick was tough, but he also wasn't tough, He couldn't take the shots so he isn't physically tough, but mentaly he was up there. If this is about mentality then Roy Jones would have to be up there as well, he took an absolute beating before Glen Johnson knocked him out, and he took a lot of cheap shots when you look back, I just was watching Jones-Tarver I, and Jones in the first round gets a forehead right in the kisser, and he doesn't seem to bothered by it, In that fights he gets hit by a lot of tough shots to the body and upstairs. He was also hit by a perfect elbow from Julio Gonzalez if I remember correctly, and it didn't even phase him.

Mamby fought in the Cayman Islands in March. It was a sanctioned fight not an exibition. Mamby went 10 rounds and became the oldest fighter to compte at age 60. I was on the card that night. He was a cool guy, real intelligent in and out of the ring.

That is unbelievable. Thanks for the 1st person account. It must be genetics or something it the water to still be able to pass a physical and compete for 10 rounds. The man has only been stopped one time,And out of all the top names it was against string bean hitter Derrel coley no less ??I hope he did it out of passion for the sport as opposed to the need for money though.

Re: Slick Boxers Who Are Tough.
Oba Carr was very tough and when he wanted to be he was tough but he was so offensive minded that he would disregard the defense sometimes but he was very tough in the beatings he took against Forrest and Trinidad and De La Hoya aswell.
