Feed mine Diamond Premium Maintenance. A good food and I have never had problem of any sort. It has a bit higher % of corn than I like, as corn is just a filler and can dry a coat out, but I've never run into that problem really and my dogs have excelled. Low stool volume as well which is nice. Also has a bit more by-product than I like but as I said I used mine for working/hunting dogs and they've always been very healthy. I've been feeding it for years and years. Stay away from Natural Choice dog food; runny stools and poor coats.
IAMS is good as is Science Diet.
i heard that the owners dog was just like the owner
Well Science Diet is good but they use, or used to use, corn filler as well, for 1/2 the price of Science Diet I could get just as good a food with some by-product in there. When I had a whole bunch of dogs it made a big difference. I will be changing though soon as I only have about 20 and they are all getting older, so I will go to a lower protein, minus the by product so it is easier on them. But I had one of my dogs pass a few months ago at the age of 15 1/2 so he did alright. But a high protein count in the food when a dog gets older will sometimes bust their kidneys up; to the point of smelling piss out of their mouths, so something to keep in mind as a dog gets older. Just my experience sometimes.
Ok, we are only talking about Pitbull breeds right? Cause I am. My pits father was 90 plus pounds and he is on Nutro as well. Im trying to get mine as big that is why I have him on Nutro.
What breed and how big is your dog?
What food is good for building your dogs size? Thats the food I want, any suggestion?
Well genetics from breeding will determine what size he has; feeding a dog bred from some of my stuff and you'd never get a 90 pound dog and if you did he'd be a fat pos. So if you're working with bloodlines that carry alot of different scatter bred dogs they will tend to be larger over time. Alot of my dogs are no more than 55 pounds and that's all I need. It's like feeding a horse jockey as much as you can and thinking he'll get big; won't happen except in the gut area. Genetics man.
Here's a pic of my Napolean dog. Actually it is my girlfriends baby and she feeds him dogfood, ice cream, cookies, spaghetti, etc. etc. Fat pos can't even turn over if he falls on his back. He's very overweight but still only 70 pounds; and should be low 50's at best.

Here's my boy Tombstone 4 years ago; never over 58 pounds and as well put together as a bulldog can be. He is right now 10 years old and 50-52.

yea i know, thats why i ask what breed you guys have. Thats why I mention my dogs father. I know pitbulls come in all sizes now, I use to always want the smallest kind. the staffordshire bull terrier, my first dog was half that and half original mid size APBT. The one I have now, is the large size pits. Thats why I want to know about the food best for large breed dogs. Nutro is the only one I know about that i have been feeding him but lately i heard its not a good idea, Im not sure why. Anybody out there does?
Heres a pic of my pup.
Nice pit, the bottom pic looks like my first dog. My first dog's ears weren't cut as well. the one I have now has an appointment tuesday for his vaccination shots, I will speak to the vet about cutting his ears. His at the right age now for it too, his 8 weeks old and about 15 pounds.
Sorry; I misunderstood what you were trying to say. It's too complicated to say what "kind" of pit bulls I have as I breed pretty much one bloodline. Those giant dogs are so scatterbred they have no real firm family they are behind. I run the Mayday and Honeybunch/Jeep lines; gamebred lines; which run smaller. As far as the food just look for a brand that you like and it will most likely have a "Large Breed" bag; though I think that whole large breed thing is stupid and a $$$ scam. And what you feed him will be alright as you said you will supplement his diet anyways with red meat.
And my dogs ears aren't cut; I've never trimmed a dogs ears as I don't like the look and it will save you hassle from pit bull haters who think cropped ears mean you fight your dogs; trust me. Plus floppy ears are better;D Tombstones right ear got mangled by a big feral hog and looks like Sebastian Lujan's ear after MArgarito handled him;D
Pit bulls scare the shit out of me.
I have a greyhound/golden mix. It can run about 40 miles an hour whilst shedding entire coats of hair. It is afraid of most everything, including our gerbils. Sometimes it can't stop so well while running and plows into things, which is always kinda funny. It's overly friendly, doesn't bite, and i'm not sure if it even chews its food. I feed it Science Diet, and steaks, and chicken...and occasionally some of what ever is left over on my plate. And jelly beans. She likes to eat grass, and lick other dogs bums and her own. She's probably not really a she, more like an it, but no penis.
I know when a storm is coming, because she comes to my feet and trembles. The closer it gets, the more she shakes. I've seen little dogs, like toy poodles, terriers, and other breeds not much more then 5 pounds, both kick my dogs ass and send it home whining. In short, my dog is a pussy, and not very well fed. The end.
Lol. I worked for a vet for several years on the weekends. He had a greyhound farm as he went to tracks all over the country. Don't be fooled; you can't nose up 2 greyhounds or they will bang; they need to be muzzled alot of them when in front of each other. I couldn't believe some of the damage I saw on 2 that were brought in that had tried to kill each other. Golden Retriever maybe not so much;D
I didn't crop my first dogs ears, but I will my new pup. People who hate or are afraid of pitbulls just dont understand them. Ears cut or not they will still hate or be afraid of them. I like the large size pitbulls cause those are actually less active and less human aggressive imo. They are heavy but they are gentle giants. The other large pitbulls are in competition (such as weight pulling) which is great for their rep. The mid size pits are actually the ones I worry about more, because so much of the mid size pits are the ones beeing overbred. Most are actually mutts and not pure bred, in my experience pure bred pits are not human aggressive. Cutting the ears gives them a meaner look but people dont understand, pitbulls are not the only breed that gets their ears cut. Most of the Man-stopper breeder such as doberman gets their ear and tail cut. Pits just look the scariest cause they are the latest so called "dangerous dogs".
Doberman and German shepard the two breed the scares me the most, its funny cause a fact about pitbull is that you could actually easily steal one of someones backyard, it would volunteerily walk with you if not train to protect. But you could never do that to a doberman or a german shepard.
I understand the not understanding pitbulls thingy, Julius. Basically I am afraid of any dog that can potentially chew me to bits. Whether that comes from a bad owner or not. I have a friend who has a german shepherd that is a bit cross for whatever reason, and my friend says to me, "Just don't let him know you're scared."
Well wtf? I go there, and now I am scared of being scared, on top of being chewed to bits. Wasn't there 10 minutes and the dog had me pinned in his living room, growling at me, as I was about to wet my pants. lol :shakehead:
I was bit when I was younger by a dog, so I suppose it is residual fear. But yea...dogs smell it on me, and mess with my head.
Pitts are interesting, because they differ from region to region for what theyre bred for
Mine is a Florida Pitt, they bread them for boar hunting, faster, and better noses, then a NYC Pitt which are just monsters
