The media are always looking for a great white hope, and Kelly Pavlik is a nice guy with an exciting style. So it was hard not to like him or respect him, and it was hard for the media to not get high on Kelly Pavlik aswell as us boxing fans.
As for not doing anything in his career i think thats BS aswell. He beat good contenders in Fulgencio Zungia, Jose Luis Zertche, aswell as Edison Miranda who was one the most feared fighters in the world at that time. Then beating the man who beat Bernard Hopkins x2.
I'll keep rooting for Kelly Pavlik he is genuine nice guy, with an exciting style i wish him well for the future.

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
calzaghe is a prik, it dodged so many fighters its unreal. he wants to be undefeated like marciano. but every one knows the main reason rocky was undefeated was because he was with the mob and they influenced fights. mayweather is the only real undefeated genius. joe can fight and hes a great boxer but come on, who would you want to be if you were a superstar boxer..floyd, roy and bernard are the G.O.A.TS

Only name I can think of is Glen Johnson.
In terms of who Calzaghe's ducked it was people at Light Heavyweight only I'm guessing since there were no real super middleweight threats(at least in their prime) when Calzaghe was down there ruling.
The biggest names on his list are Lacy(who by now doesn't seem like a big win but hindsight is always 20-20) a debated victory against Hopkins and against a faded Chris Eubank.
Now people take credit away from Leonard for his questionable win against Hagler. But when it comes to Calzaghe people seem to give him a little more rope and I think a lot of hate stems from the double standards boxing fans like to use. But hey its boxing and its fans no one is ever consistant 100 percent with fighters they like and dislike, its just human nature.

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
I don't think Pavlik is overrated. What people say about him is true. He is a 1-2 puncher, he has good comeback ability, he doesn't quit, and he has power in his shots.
Overhyped, maybe, but Pavlik is a champion and is still young so his career is far from over.
Hopkins fought a perfect fight and had the perfect game plan and experience to have the performace against Pavlik he had.
Kelly is still young and definitely will learn from this experience. Hopkins, Pacquiao, De La Hoya, Mosley, etc all have losses in their record but are still great fighters. Pavlik still has time...

Glen Johnson
Carl Froch
LOL.
He was due to fight Johnson after he fought Shieka, Shieka won so Joe battered him in 3rds.
As for Froch you are kidding!! the guy is due to have his biggest fight against Jean Pascal.
Do one mate.

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Calzaghe calling another fighter overrated?! Now that's funny...coming from one of the MOST overrated fighters in history. If he only was fighting a prime Roy Jones...he would be exposed for the over hyped fighter he is.
-
Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
According to Frank warren he has pulled out of about 10 fights he lined up for him warren wouldn't say it if it weren't true being they are in a legal battle he wouldn't want Calzaghe doing him over lies.
-
Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Everyone that looses when favored is not overrated, very very few thought the fight would go the way it did. Joe himself was probably on of the most relived people on the planet saturday night, b-hop took the chance he wasn't willing to. He should be careful what he says....he himself is less than a month away from possibly having all this discussion being how overrated he is.....he's talking like beating roy is already in the bag, i can only imagine this place if he looses.

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Saying Calzaghe DUCKED Johnson is just silly.
He pulled out injured. Which turned out to be the BEST thing that EVER happened to Johnson. He wouldn't have made his name by sparking out Roy.. and subsequently beating Tarver. ;)
They were being lined up to meet AGAIN around 2006.. But Clinton Woods beat Johnson scuppering it.

One question Fenster im sure i remember that the winner of the 3rd Clinton Woods vs Glen Johnson fight. Was supposed get a shot against Joe Calzaghe, why did that not happen ?

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Pavlik was overhyped by his fans.
I'm glad Hopkins took him to school. That took his fans back to reality.
I do hope the best for Pavlik in the furture though, He is a good guy and has a exciting style.

Think there were a few reasons.. mainly though probably because in would have meant Warren and Hobson (the promoters who were slagging eachother off in the press constantly) would have to work together to make it happen.

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Exactly! why did he fight peter manfredo! when are you calzaghe lovers going to realise that joe will always have a big question mark over his career. he could possibly redeem himself a bit by fighting chad after jones and the possibly carl froch. he needs some more names to make himself live up to what he thinks he is.
everyone that knows anything about boxing knowsyou could not touch roy in his prime. Roys legs are gone now and he is way to gunshy to to win this fight. but i pray to god that he wins and wins in style.
Dont get me wrong I think joe is a great fighter butdont let the undefeated thing fool you son..its b'llocks.

I was rooting for Pavlik in this one. Round 1 - 3 I was basically sitting relaxed saying "don't worry, Hopkins will fade soon enough, it's still early." Rounds 4 - 6 I was thinking "anytime now Kelly, let it go." Then from that moment on I was witnessing history in the making. I stopped talking and forgot about rooting for Pavlik and just sat there in awe on how great Hopkins really is.
Pugilistic, nice sig! That portion of the fight I was sitting with my hands over my head...

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Another thing i think is Joe Calzaghe should actually watch was he is saying, i think RJJ has a decent chance against Joe Calzaghe. And if Joe Calzaghe loses to RJJ the amount threads saying the exact samething about Kelly Pavlik, will be reversed onto Joe Calzaghe.
Im not liking Joe Calzaghe's attitude regarding this fight one bit, he is talking like its already formality that he will beat RJJ. When thats not the case, RJJ is still faster than Joe Calzaghe. And he is the naturally bigger man, i think Joe Calzaghe should be silent until he beats RJJ.

Give it up Fenster some people are just fucking idiots I'm afraid.
Froch may have been calling Calzaghe out for years but until about 18 months ago his biggest win was against Matthew Barney
People should have a go at Floyd Mayweather for quitting the sport before Amir Khan got his chance to prove that he would beat him in a 4 rounder, the Pretty Boy obviously didn't fancy his chances.

People like different styles.
Hopkins only fights defensive because of his age. In his prime he was top notch. he could do everything.
I personally don't like Hatton's style although i do like him and respect what he does.

Well i guess it's silly (some would say sick) to cover the same old arguments over and over again BUT it's not really hard defending a fighter that is 45-0 and universally recognised as TOP 3 P4P.
;D

Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Sounds to me like hitting a guy when he's down. And all because Joe needed vindication for not chosing to fight Pavlik. He could have been gracious and offered Pavlik words of wisdom. He had an opportunity to be classy, but instead he was arrogant.
There is good reason prior to Pavlik v. Hopkins people blasted Calzaghe for choosing RJJ over Pavlik: he chose an old fighter over a young one. In his own book, he says RJJ is old and past his prime.

Same with Hopkins. The guy is a role model to youngsters. 43yrs old and keeps his body in superb condition. That's the thing I hate about Hatton though. The way he binges and boozes in between fights.

Correct but he fought in a way that was a joy to watch for once, not much spoiling at all, he did some great work. I always thought Bernard would win but never in such a great fashion.
I did feel bad for Kelly though and I still do when people say he is/was overrated. He has more balls than all these bashers put together.

I'm a big Carl Froch fan but the truth is as of yet he has done nothing to warrent a fight with Calzaghe.
After beating Jeff Lacy Joe quite rightly wanted to make a big name for himself in America and get the mega fights over there.
To that end he took a fight with Peter Manfredo, the most popular fighter on the Contender and well known both in the US and the UK. It may have been a mismatch but as a way of getting the attention of casual American fans it obviously made smart business sense.
He then had a stay busy fight with Sakio Bika, who was coming off an aborted title shot against Marcus Beyer before challening the undefeated and double champion Mikkel Kessler in a massive and highly risky unification fight.
Finally after winning that he was a big enough name to get his mega fights and has now fought B Hop and Roy Jones Jr in successive fights.
Please tell me, all those who think he's ducking Froch, when would it have made sense to fight him?
Froch has never been on the radar for Joe Calzaghe and fo good reason.
He's completely unproven, completely unknown, has never even been in a big fight let alone won one, he offers nothing in terms of money, world titles, stateside appeal or resume so in short why the fuck would Joe have ever fought him?
-
Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
I actually like Calzaghe,Topped Hopkins legit.....but here he sounds like an attention deprived toddler wearing a soggy diaper,Get em a set of plastic keys already !!!Kelly and such apparently under his skin....way to smack a guy when he's on the mat Joe.That being said...I think he will beat Jones jr.
edit,Not overrated. Two solid wins over Taylor. He was hyped up obnoxiously though.
-
Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
Jones has to be the favorite against calzaghe. I'm a fan of both joe and roy. They are both old and past it, but i'll still pick roy as the one to beat.
-
Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
I think that Calzaghe was slightly relieved to see him beaten so soundly by B-Hop, otherwise he would have had lots of pressure to fight on past when he wanted to!
-
Re: Calzaghe: "pavlik Was Overrated, Overhyped And Hadn't Done Anything In His Career
I think Jones is going to pull this one off he looked good vs Trinidad i know Trinidad had been out about 32 months but Roy looked good and relaxed i think had he thrown more left hooks he would have had him out of their. Roy's injury to his left bicep wouldn't have helped it was a torn bicep also i think he was holding back slightly not letting on what he had left because he knew their was a good chance of this fight happening.

Who has Joe Calzaghe ducked ?
You find me one heavyweight Rocky Marciano ducked. HE beat everyone who was available. Ezzard Charles,Jersey Joe Walcott, Archie Moore, an older Joe Louis. Yes they may have been older but Rocky did not dodge anyone he fought everyone who was inline to fight for the championship. Genius Floyd Mayweather has ducked Margarito and Cotto for the last few years now. Even if he retire's undefeated until he fight's these two he has dodged them to me.
