Which fighter has had the longest reign as P4P#1?

I was just wondering last night who had the longest reign as P4P#1

Jones was p4p from 94 till 2003 i think.

ROy jones jr until tarver clowned him??

Roy actually had it temporarily lifted by many publications when they put trinidad ahead of him, of course he regained it once he was knocked out by bhop.

During his reign afew people may have put Mosley and Tito ahead of him until they lost .

RJJ wasn't P4P number 1 for that long overall only 3 years i believe. Because Shane Mosley, ODLH, ETC. All over took RJJ at one point.

Pernell Whitaker and Julio Cesar Chavez are the longest reigning P4P number 1 fighters i believe.

Cause there are so many knowledgable people on this forum. Which fighters have held the top P4P spot in their careers since Ring Magazine has started with the list? I'm just curious to know because someone on this site definitely knows the answer.

and can someone tell me when ring magazine started the p4p list as well???

I already said Pernell Whitaker or Julio Cesar Chavez i believe.

I'm pretty sure Ice is right. It's JCC or SweetPea. The first name that came to mind was Chavez, but Pernell makes sense, too. My guess of those two it would be Chavez.

The 1st rankings were in a 1925 Ring Magzine but they were just rankings not P4P.

In 1989 after Tyson beat Spinks the Ring came up with a list of the P4P fighters. I personally believe it had more to do with Tyson. But who knows really.

I help out in the wikipedia page of the ring magazine and add ratings to it myself I've got lots of old ring magazines and every now and then I'll add something to it.

In 1989 the 1st P4P list looked like this:
Tyson
JCC
Pernell
Nunn
Esparragoza
Meldrick Taylor
Nelson
Raul Perez
Virgil Hill
Marlon Starling

As you can clearly see the P4P list was not a good one having left out fighters like Zaragoza who at that time was unstoppable, How about some love for Evander who was the Undisputed Cruiser and moved up to HW?
Koo Chang was a long reigning champ and got no love on the 1st P4P list.

Anyway...

JCC was P4P #1 from 1990-1992
Pernell was P4P #1 from 1993-1995
From 1996-1999 it went like this RJJ 1996, ODLH 1997 & 1998 and Pernell 1999.

So overall Pernells been #1 for 4 yrs. 3 of which were consecutive yrs.

So Boxrec is good for something other than putting up ridiculous rankings and misleading us to believe certain fights are made when infact they are not!

During Joe Louis reign he was considerd the P4P best...at least 7 years of it even during his BMOTM stints...SRR was for quite some time....Hard to say really

Duran was considered teh best for a while too.
I think on paper though, chavez was p4p the longest?

While the general consensus before roy was put down by Tarver was that he was the best.
and that lasted for years

My mistake keeper you are correct...
Pernell was NOT, P4P #1 in 1999 it was RJJ.

So it looks like JCC and Pernell are tied for #1 with both having been P4P for 3 yrs.
