Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
Word Rambo:
"Joe would have worked in any era," Sly began. "He's like one of those classical 1940's fighters who could go 15 rounds comfortably, and he doesn't have to power you out with one shot because he's in unbelievable shape. He will sit there and pepper the hell out of you with an unorthodox style. This (Calzaghe's style of fighting) hasn't been seen in America for some time, so we dismiss it.
"Everyone expects this thudding, crashing, bone-jarring punching style - supposedly this determines if a man is tough. What makes Joe a tougher man in my estimation is that he puts himself in the teeth of the fire for a longer period to achieve his goal. Joe is one of the best boxers of his generation, no question."
High praise indeed from the man whose famous movie creation inspired countless real life fighters to get in the ring in the first place. After speaking of Calzaghe's overall ability and greatness, Stallone focused on the upcoming fight with Roy Jones Junior.
"I've seen Jones shut down huge men like Vigill Hill and I saw him blast John Ruiz almost off his feet, so he definitely has that ability to rock an opponent to his boots," Stallone said. "But that was Roy Jones four, five, six years ago. I don't believe he has the speed any more to catch Calzaghe with the overhand right or one of those weird, sweeping hooks from the floor, similar to the punches from add angles that Naseem Hamed used to throw. He will be easy to back up and he will fight in spurts.
"We have seen the emergence of European boxers, along with Latino boxers, and they have come to far surpass the quality of American boxers. American boxing has to accept that it's a rebuilding process or maybe a downward spiral. Our day of dominance over other nations is over. Joe is going to demolish Jones."

Re: Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
I wouldn't say demolish... but win.T he rest of his statements were pretty grounded.
-
Re: Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
He knows the game and saying Joe will stay in the pocket is correct.

I know... that's what I said. Besides the demolition part(which I don't think will happen... Jones will just fade down the stretch) He was right about most everything else...

He knows a decent amount... clearly about this bout anyway... I'll agree with Taeth in respect to past things he's said about fighters that have been a bit outlandish...

Stallone has always been pretty close to what needs to happen. I didnt mean he is a master of the game but he clearly knows what he is talking about.
Joe will use his work-rate and stay in the pocket and Roys lack of work-rate will lose him the fight imo.
Couldnt see many film stars saying that, in fact i couldn`t see that clown Merchant saying that.

Re: Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
Which era does Stallone finally pay Wepner in?

That said Weathers plays a better Ali than Stallones Wepner. Rocky was actually good, Wepner was a punching bag.

Wepner opted for the onetime few thousand he was offered and not royalties... His bad, not Sly's...
That's what you get for wanting it "right now" He'd be a millionair today... to bad!

Not really,Stallone also offered him a residual he's never paid up
-
Re: Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
I should probably explain, there are two parts to a contract, initial and residual.
Initial is what you get up front, residual is what you get down the road if it sells.
Wepner is claiming he's never got his promised residuals
Allways read your contract carefully

Really? You can get the court transcript online and I've read them but only saw Wepner claiming this and never anything in writing... I'm not saying it was never said but just that there's no proof... He's lost 2 court cases so far.

Those same statements have been made by over 100 other writers, commentators etc...Like watching FNF and repeating Atlas keys to victory:-\

Yes but for a guy that doesnt box or a boxing writer those comments make sense. I mean how many actors would even come out and back a guy against an American fighter.

Allways get it in writing, never take a promissory note on anything, and this drives the point home
I allways tell my fighters,we'll go over the contracts
It takes longer that way
But you'll get seriously screwed hardcore if you dont

In all actuality (And not because of the Rocky movies)...Stallone has been a long time mainstay on the boxing scene as a fan...He is often seen at the big fights....So there really is no surprise he made comments like that...He knows the sport better then most
-
Re: Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
I'm genuinely suprised that Stallone had even heard of Hamed and John Ruiz.
Watching him as a commentator on the final of the first series of the Contender was embarrassing.
Every fight was like
'Oh wow this is definitely the fight of the year, yeah for me this is you know the fight of the year, we'd all love to see this again' :p

I see Stallone just repeating what most people have been saying.
Surprisingly Dan Rafael(who I never thought that much of), Bernard Hopkins, and Teddy Atlas think Roy will win. I am not sure what they have been smoking, but no way can Roy keep up with Calzaghe unless he shows something totally unexpected.
-
Re: Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
In a REAL fight, Carl Weathers would've ripped Stallone's head off his shoulders. I know it has nothing to do with the point of the thread, but I just felt like saying it.
:) :)

Yes indeed... I used to work for a debt collector.. And if it's not in writing or doesn't have a signature, by law (in court) you are going to have no claim to it...
On the other side of the coin, If a clear statement is written on a cocktail napkin and has a signature on it declaring all to be true and accepted, then you could take over Microsoft in court with it.
It's about what is in paper and what has a signature at the bottom... That's it..

Re: Stallone: Calzaghe will demolish Jones.
Surprised, isnt this the same Stallone who always yells out "TOE TO TOE, TOE TO TOE!". I dont know whether hes stating the obvious or if he knows his shit.

IMO commenting on roys odd angles and punches coming from the floor would indicate he knows his shit. Especially since he made the comparison to the Prince which is a perfect comparison.
People have their preferences, Stallone is no different. He'd rather watch Gatti/Ward than Jones/Hopkins. But he knows his stuff.

Judge Dredd really knocked this one out the park.
