James Kirkland's performance last night
Well, I saw some things that just looked bad for Kirkland going forward. I am thinking Wolfe should get him a little more time doing roadwork and skill training and a little less doing the showoff toughman training. You could see his left hand floating lower and lower each round. He looked really tired early on and had to take some rounds off. He should have much better conditioning at this point in his career.
All that being said, as long as he is put in with senior league guys at 154 he should be fine, but if he gets in with the next generation guys like Sergio Martinez or Paul Williams, he's gonna really struggle.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
Apart from his undoubted power, nothing at all impressed me.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
he showed that he can take a punch and give you a good ass beating. but he has NO DEFENSE at all. he needs a few more fights before going for a title.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
"Perro" would maul him like a ragdoll.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
While he has things he needs to work on, he whupped a guy who was signifigantly bigger then him in height and weight last night
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
His left looked to be more accurate and in spots had some nice combos but the weak links are glaring Imo.He squares up bigtime, needs to come off the body shots much more and THEN go head hunting.Woolfe was almost loosing her voice trying to get him to focus on body more.He really and seriously needs some quality rounds....that was a 'showcase' one sided beatdown where he was made to answer nearly no questions.Stamina and defense look more leaky than the Levee's downtown here.....Strong as a bull but I think the a Williams would wreck him bad and Angulo,Martinez beat him as well.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
All I seen was Kirkland Wupping ass,I think his opponent was tough as nails to take all of those shots.and Kirkland looks to me to have A ton of training under his belt,to keep the pressure on like he did throwing power shot after power shot, personally I think Kirkland is the best at 54.

I think he'd seriously struggle against Sergio Martinez, Alfredo Angulo, Paul Williams and even Vernon Forrest. I think he definately should be able to improve, his natural ability is undeniable and he has the "it" factor, but there are some serious flaws in his game. Fortunately for Kirkland everything that he lacks, are things that can be learned.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
He looks very beatable to me he looks sloppy and his feet are pretty slow. And he's wide open, he does have awesome power but power only gets you so far. I think he is on the verge of being badly exposed by a good boxer.

At this point in tim Angulo murders him IMO.....I was not overly impressed with Kirkland last night....Vera was like a heavybag in the ring and still even with his pitiful output on offense he was catching Kirkland with the straight rights....Yes Kirkland took them well but he was tired by rd 5 had his mouth open...He also did not take advantage of Vera's lack of output by using it as a chance to work on some things...Put together more combos etc......He at times showed some good head movement but again look what he was avoiding.....
He has a future ahead of him but needs some more work on important things like defense and how to compose himself so he does not tire out...
IMO Anne Wolf will not be the trainer to bring him to the next level...Yes she has some unconventional methods of training that look to impress but all that and he was still fatigued by mid rounds??...Something wrong there IMO.....
We will see what happens but again IMO he is not ready for the upper tier anytime soon

Yeah and he wasnt supposed to beat Vera last night, and he destroyed him, give credit where its due

He wasn't supposed to beat Brian Vera are you kidding me ? Brian Vera is one of the most limited boxers i've ever seen. God knows how Andy Lee lost to him.

Don't know who on here said that butI never did..Who the hell is Vera?...His best win is over Samuel Miller....The win over Lee was because Lee was exausted and there for the punch...Until then Vera was getting his ass kicked....If he ever met Lee again Andy would not make the same mistake.....

Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
Trainer Monkey's not serious, is he? ;D
Who the hell thought Vera was going to win? He was the opponent.
Anyway, I'm not getting my hopes up with Kirkland. He's fun to watch but he doesn't seem to take the need to improve his skills seriously enough. I wouldn't write him off versus Angulo though.

You kidding,on the lead up everyone was picking Vera,me and maybe two other posters were picking Kirkland
Dont rewrite history, most people on this board had Kirkland losing

You taking the piss? Check the prediction comp, i bet not a single person picked Vera. No one gave him (thats Vera) a hope in hells chance (rightly).
Kirkland was a 1/10 shot with the bookies (that means he was virtually a cert).
I wasn't very impressed with him. His lack of concern for taking shots means he's an accident waiting to happen in my book.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
;D I have no idea who these people were who picked Vera? They're like imaginary friends, imaginary friends who way overrated Vera.
25 out of 26 people who voted in the prediction contest picked Kirkland. I won't say who the one who picked Vera was except for the screen name CutmeMick.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
By the way I was excellent on the prediction contest this past week. Like a focused Zab Judah.

Cutmemick was obviously trying to be smart. :beat: (;D)

Kirkland stamina will be tested. Vera chin is solid. This will be a good fight.

I think Kirkland takes this one but his lack of Rounds/defense could catch up to him badly down the stretch

Kirkland is more than capable of being at least as effective as "the Don" and that was over in two if I'm not mistaken.
First off with the contender he took last minute replacement while the rest of show had been training for almost three months and him only two weeks. Never has made an excuse 168 is not his weight fought art that weight because he is a fighter. James needs to watch out because he is finally getting the real training he needs just like he did against Lee. New fighter new erra for him. Watch for the upset . Lee is an awesome boxing and would handle Kirtkland. He is only five seven with heels on. Quit hating and watch the outcome of this fight. James is a greay fighter dont get me wrong but heart and determination will go along ways and he will be tested believe that. Its going to be fire works....

I guess they are fixing the mess between Golden Boy & Gary Shaw regarding Kirkland.
It will be good to see Kirkland get some more exposure on HBO. I think he should take care of Vera pretty easily.
ESPN - Legal battle nears end, opening door for Kirkland-Vera battle Nov. 22 on HBO - Boxing
Definate showcase fight for Kirkland, easy money, easy to look good.
I'm sure Andy Lee thought the same thing.;)

This is actually a dangerous fight for Kirkland. Vera is a bigger man. Sure he lost to Jaidon, but Jaidon is a true SMW/LHW. Vera has fought his whole career at or above 160. Kirkland is more polished, Lee and Codrington are both probably better than the guys Kirkland has faced. Vera is a step up for Kirkland in two ways - he's a step up in size and a step up in quality. That's a recipe for an upset.

I'm picking Vera TKO...
I like Kirkland and I think he's exciting as hell.
But I just think he's gonna be a little too wild and is gonna get caught by the more relaxed and composed Vera.

Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
So as far as I can tell (that's a bit jumbled) Pacdbest and Spicoli thought it was going to be a good fight that Kirkland would win and Rozzy Sean and CutmeMick thought Vera would win.
27 out of 29 so far for Kirkland. ;D
I'm not sure where we are going with this.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
I've made worse picks so its not a matter of look at RozzySean and Mick, they picked Vera, lol. I just don't know what were arguing about honestly, clearly everybody did not pick Vera, pretty clearly it was the exact opposite.

Aww TM my man,You can not be serious ;D Just saw what you put up with that quote.Your painting with a broad brush on that one.....Down the stretch refers to the career progress:kar:

Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
I was expecting big things from Kirkland from what I heard.
But all I noticed is power. Put him in with a Williams, Forrest and he gets beat.
The bout should have been stopped around the 5th as well BTW.
-
Re: James Kirkland's performance last night
there are moments that i thought kirkland will get dropped in this fight. good thing that vera doesnt have good mechanics in how to throw a punch and keep his balance, otherwise kirkland could have tasted the canvas there. he got caught with a lot of punches there and those were punches that have been thrown in succession. except if you're dazed, you shouldn't have to get hit by the same punch 3 times one after the other.

I could have put up more quotes from people picking him to lose
And I have never seen a guy destroy a guy the way he did to Vera and then have his performance picked apart as much as his has been the next day.
It was barely a fight,it was closer to abuse, again,he had a game plan and stuck to it,and it worked

Maybe Kirkland needs to leave Wolfe for a better trainer but he won't do it. It will take her being selfless and firing herself because the two have such a close relationship. They are two birds of a feather and it will take the teacher to realize she's taken the student as far as she can.

In this case its stupid
He beat Vera's ass in,it wasnt much of a fight,as much as it was abuse.
If it had been tight or something I could see it, but it was never tight, Kirkland just beat the hell out of that boy.
And people are calling for him to leave Wolfe after a seriously decisive victory?
Oh do please

I'm not arguing that nobody thought Vera would win, I'm just saying that the idea that "everybody" thought Vera was gonna win was off the charts crazy, obviously 25 out of 26 people is pretty solid.
Kirkland is great to watch though but it will be his downfall, he's just too wild, he's gonna get clipped, its inevitable.

He just has to tighten up his defense and relax in the ring...IMO his being fatigued may have been more of him tryinmg too hard then anything....But either way with all that crap Wolfe does to increase stamina he should have been fresh throughout......
As for Vera.....
The guy is tough as nails and can take a hell of a shot but it will lead to a very short career

Daxx got it,he wasnt too wild at all,he was stiff and not wanting to screw up his network debut. He never varied from the game plan, but that also meant he took very few risks. He took exactly what Vera was giving him,and pounded it.
Give him a few more network fights and he'll find a middle ground between his stiff but effective performance against Vera, and his earlier free-wheeling style.Or he gets his head handed to him.
But regardless,he did win the fight, and win it easily, cut the kid an ounce of slack here.
