Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Interested to know thoughts?
Stepping in against Travis 'frieght train' Walker on Saturday as an IBF title eliminator. Travis can punch, he's got a good knockout record and his only loss came as a 1 round TKO against TJ Wilson, which he swiftly avenged.
Arreola has got a quality record...good knockout rate and never tasted defeat.
Should be a quality fight. IMO it will be an Arreola TKO...but he will be tested.
Anyone think this guy can trouble the heavys?

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I think he is a contender, he was briefly ranked in the top ten, and he has notable wins off of other prospects. And with his relentless style of fighting, you got to like him.
However
Travis Walker will not be a test. Walker is a club fighter, and there will be huge disparity in talent.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Could be a contender, he's exciting enough you want to back him. I don't know about you but I want to see heavyweights fighting the way he does and the way Haye does. That being said if someone can handle or avoid his power, he's gonna have major problems
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Arreola's best weapon is he's a smotherer. Against the kind of opposition he's been in with so far it's a great strategy. But when he steps in against any elite fighter he'll lose and look sloppy doing it. Sultan Ibragimov, Ruslan Chagaev, Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko- hell, Eddie Chambers will all make him looke sloppy.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Chambers would handle him and cut him up with his slashing shots. Chris does not train hard and this will catch up to him soon enough. Once he is extended, he will gas and be taken out.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
hes good but i dont think he can handle the klitschos or any other elite heavyweight. he should fight James toney next to get a better test.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
good guy- not a contender; couldn't beat the Brothers K or Haye. Let him fight Sultan or one of the other Russians so we can actually see what he's made of.
In my opinion he hasn't been tested, so I don't think we know what kind of boxer he actually is. AND, would he bother even getting in shape for any of those fights?

Indeed!

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I think he's a contender now.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
i think he is a contender. with his style, he will lose to some of the top guys but with that being said......with his style HE WILL beat some of the top guys. it works both ways. his smothering and jumping on his opponents will make him look sloppy at times but he will catch some of the "better" heavies who wont know how to handle his style. ;)

Exactly, his stamina is his biggest weakness. He has a good chin, and can bang a little so he's gonna make some good fights. I don't see him beating Wlad or Vitali though.

Don't think that will happen because they train together sometimes and have Goosen as their promoter.

Chambers would start fast and than mentally quit. Arreola would stop his ass

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Among this group, sure, I don't think he's anything that special though.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
He a fringe contender at best. Arreola looked incredibly slow against Walker. He's got talent but he's on his way up and he's ALREADY showing that he doesn't take training serious. He looked extremely fat and out of shape. Anyone in the top 5 would probably KO him.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I really try to keep an open mind.Arreola point blank strikes me as a fighter living in the 'now'...fight to fight for the moment and honestly just wants to knock heads.I really do not see him making adjustment's or showing a working effort to Improve over all,be it with condition or defense etc.Fight changing power but straight down the middle he is severly hitable.
What you see is what you get,he will be exciting while he is going through the rise but honestly Imo...when he runs into someone with a stiff jab and combanation punching,he'll get KO'd early. It is a major statement ,and not in a great way, that HBO is labeling him the 'best american heavyweight prospect' ???

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Arreola will beat a lot of heavyweights out there. He easily beat Travis Walker, Israel Garcia, and Chazz Witherspoon (combined record of 70-2). He looks sloppy, but he deserves credit.
It won't be combination punching that beats Arreola; it will be swiftness and a good jab. A boxer that can go for twelve rounds and who will make Arreola work to win rounds.

All the credit in the world but he was catching combos quite a bit.Getting tagged like he was I just can not see him making it through twelve rounds if he is forced to back up.A hard jab,as walker was switching with, from head to body and then following up will do a number on him if he does not start getting serious imo.

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Not convinced though with state of heavies you have to say he is a fringe player
As said the klitschkos would destroy him as would Haye
Lets put him in with Audley next ;)
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I think he's shown he has the tools to be a player. His tactic of staying on the ropes and letting Walker unload on him and tasting his power will not work against either Klitschko and probably not many other strong punching heavies.
Overall, he's in the mix and he needs to be taken seriously. I don't think he's ready for a Klitschko. But I don't think David Haye has done enough to be a heavy favorite against Chris. Actually it would be a very interesting matchup to see Haye fight Arreola as an eliminator preceeding a Klitschko fight.
For the record, I think Arreola has a better chance against Wlad than Haye. I haven't seen Haye eat a solid heavyweight punch yet.

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Cris Arreola = Sam Peter....he has the power and the chin to beat a lot of folks the only problem is that the fat bastard WON'T improve his defense, he WON'T train properly, and he WON'T improve his skills as a boxer....he'll lean on the crutch that is his power and once he meets a solid boxer with good defense and stamina he's toast...he's going to look very very bad very soon.
I'd like to see him fight one or more of the following: Sam Peter, Andrew Golota, Jameel McCline, Tony Thompson, Ray Austin, Lamon Brewster, John Ruiz, Cedric Boswell, Dominick Guinn, Fres Oquendo, Juan Carlos Gomez.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I think Arreola has the necessary tools (power, decent boxing skills, chin, attitude)... but he definitely needs to dedicate himself a little more in training. That being said, I enjoy his fights more than most other heavyweights today. So I'm rooting for him to go far in a division that sorely needs excitement.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Boxing skill?!?!! Arreola looks like one of those guys Wlad will pummel into submission...he doesn't use his feet, he doesn't counter, he just throws like a wild banshee and whatever lands he lands with decent power but when he's getting repeatedly nailed with punches he'll clam up and turn into another obese punching bag like the rest of the division everyone hates so much.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Slower than an ox and as sloppy as madonna.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I say put him in there with James Toney. Seriously. I think Toney stops him.
Fat fight!!!
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I don't see him as a contender until he fight's someone with expierence.Yes he beat the up and comers but now it's time to get veterans in there. People who already have been tested against the best of the division. Or make a big fight right off the bat. Arreola vs Haye plain and simple.

Say what you want, but he is as entertaining as any heavy of the moment. He looks like the a mexican mafia enforcer crossed with freddy kruger. His post fight interviews are priceless. I loved when he was like "I just need to get some Menudo." (tripe soup).
I want to see him in with a lower tiered top ten fighter.

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
....he has the potential.

He's got more skill than Peter and he throws much better combos. He doesn't have the one punch power of Peter, but he has more volume, he moves better, and he he's taller.
You are right, for sure, he tends to come into fights out a shape. He was in good shape for the Witherspoon fight and he looked better in that fight. He's got some potential, but next year will be too early to fight either Klit. I think he could give Haye some problems, but it's hard to tell for sure. Haye has yet to face real HW. The Barrett win meant nothing to me.
A guy like Ray Ausin or Guinn would be a good step up for him, most of your list, really. I would favor him against most of those guys. Tony Thompson would be a tough matchup for him. I agree with the poster who said that mover with a jab will give him the most problems.

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
I say CONTENDER.
The good
He's got POWER, good chin, solid (allbeit BIG) body, decent stamina from what we've seen. Throws and doesn't stop until you say uncle. Has good angles on his punches
The Bad
He is fat. he plods a bit much/not very lite on his feet. Doesn't really look for good spots to throw punches, a little bit too much caution to the wind. No real game plan it seems in his fights.
The Ugly
Fatty Fatty Fatty. Not a pleasant looking individual either... Anybody else look at that mug!?
And I think Peter would be an excellent next match for him. These guys could bang it out and maybe that would get Peter motivated to learn something new to take to the Brothers of Klit.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Not if he keeps coming in fat like that. Let's be honest, Travis Walker lost that fight more than Chris Arreola won it. Walker was in the best physical condition of his career, too bad he didn't come in with a superior gameplan. Let's see, you're faster, taller and have more stamina- oh, I know! Lets just get in there and lob bombs at him! Everyone knows Arreola has KO power, once he took off his robe and had those big floppy boobies his corner should have told Walker to fight on the outside, jab Arreola to death until he was about to fall over in exhaustion. No way Arreola could have made a full 12 rounds if proper body work had been put in and Walker made a commitment to keep him at the end of his left hand. The KO would have come all on its own, but Trav came into Cris' house and tried to play his game. I'll give Arreola credit for adjusting, he's definitely the better, smarter boxer, but that would have mattered none if he couldn't get to his opponent.

I'd like to see him fight Cedrick Boswell. I also wouldn't mind seeing him destroy Brian Minto.

Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
It really depends...I think it's very dangerous to basically give away a round to any fighter much less to one as seasoned as those guys.
Well I think Boswell would be a good fight but honestly I feel that if Fres Oquendo came to fight in shape he'd make Cris look silly. Arreola is one of those guys Chris Byrd would take out. James Toney could really take advantage of how sloppy Arreola fights.
Cris Arreola is the Mexican Randall 'Tex' Cobb....he's funny, fat, and sloppy
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Sam Peter would kill him. Peter is at his best with anyone who stands still long enough for him to hit. Peter took a lumping from both Klitschkos; I doubt Arreola would come close to what they did.

I was thinking more along the lines on an unmotivated Tua...with less technique and the giant Abe lincoln hair doo ?Remember when that fight was being talked about?
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
A contender now but thats not really that difficult. He's slow, very hittable and he doesn't seem motivated enough to train at this stage.
Pity as he was the best prospect the US had and he looks like he's not going to go all the way.

Fres in his prime could probably outpoint him. He's exactly the type of fighter that would give Arreola a hard time. Kevin Johnson also has the skill set to frustrate and potentially beat Arreola. If Toney stayed busy enough, he would win. My first impression was that you were selling him short to call him a Mexican Tex Cobb, but Cobb had a few good wins and gave some decent boxers good fights.
His workrate sets him apart from most HW's, and that will give him a chance against a lot of more refined fighters. He certainly isn't the savior of the division, but he's good for the division nonetheless. He should give us a FOTY candidate or two before he's done.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
It is obvious Arreola does not have the discipline to be a world champ. The fact that he keeps saying he is not giving 100% to training is not a good sign. Any top 5 heavy wrecks him.
-
Re: Chris Arreola - Contender or Not?
Rossy the thing is if his work rate sets him apart then why would he come into a big fight so out of shape???
If he doesn't come into a fight in good shape then he's giving up his biggest asset!!!!
Wlad and Vitali would massacre him and I think at this point that is a given. I think if David Haye is a decent BOXER then he could really beat the crap out of Arreola but he takes a bunch of shots as well.
