Who has done more for the sport of boxing in the last 20 years? Who has consistently taken on the biggest challenges, and made the biggest matchups in the sport? He deserves everything he gets IMO.
I say good luck to him.
Brought allot to the sport, did better than I could do.
Yes. Based on his early work. Yes
.
I see the unveiling of Hoya's statue as a bad premonition going into a big fight...
Hoya's statue standing next to the statue of retired sports superstars Magic Johnson and Wayne Gretzky?
Hoya still an "active" boxer... This statue could signal the end of Hoya's boxing career... This Saturday's fight could be the last for Hoya?
Just my thoughts... ;)
.
You're absolutely right TAETH. But people's opinions of him will not be what he's done, but what he's been doing lately. And the past couple of years have not been Oscar's best work.
I was a huge Oscar fan. I respected him so much. But his recent actions have totally changed me. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I'm not even an Oscar fan, but I must admit that he's done a lot for Los Angeles and especially for the Latino community there. I'm fine with it, he deserves it.
WHy complain. It is great when our sport gets any mainstream recognition.
That being said, I am so rooting for Pac-man come saturday. I am sick of Oscar.
Of course, I think history will remember Oscar for his accomplishments in his prime and finding sucess and holding titles at different weight classes throughout his career, as they should. Like him or not, he has done a lot for boxing.
Is DLH the only guy who has a statue outside Staples? If so, that makes it quite an honor, doesn't it? Does he deserve more than other stars like Kareem? Who knows, Who cares, really.
I think Magic also has a statue. I think it's great. Plus, it's LA. A lot of baseball fans probably wouldn't think of Juan Marichal as the first baseball player to deserve a statue but in San Francisco it was a very cool thing. Oscar is loved in LA, has been for a very long time now so it works there.
Whether he deserves it or not is irelevent, I mean how can any mere mortal DESERVE to be immortalised in a statue much less someone who just beats people up for money.
At the end of the day it's whoever the people of LA want as a statue I guess.
If they like it fine, if they don't well let them throw eggs at it, even better.
Ultimately I'm just happy they only made it out of bronze.
Having his likeness hewn out of such a cheap material must surely irk Saint Oscar who would obviously have rather been fashioned and displayed in all his golden greatness
I think it is well deserved. Who else has won belt's at 130,135,140,147,154, 160
Yep,he's six weigh champ and has won the gold medal too!!Nice one;D
I know I bash the fag alot, But a lot of people bring up his gift decision with Strum, But I also had him beating Tito and Mosley the second time and won a gold, So yea he deserves one like alot of other fighters. But I still don't like him, like that really matters though.
Very worthy. There may be other people that are worthy of receiving statues but Oscar is definitely worth every pound of that adoration.
Stalin got one, so on that merit I suppose DLH can have one too.
Doesnt mean very much and they get taken down when the tide of opinion changes or is eventually allowed to flourish.
It will most likely be adorned with rude graffiti should I ever pass that way. :p
Oscar has taken on all comers for his crown. He has saved boxings ass again and again.
So would I.
Oscar is so popular because of how good he was in his prime, he faced the best and ducked abolutely no one, he was great to watch too. He challenged himself to the max by facing Hopkins, of course his main motive is money but he earned it the hard way. I think the statue is justified especially in LA.
Ofcourse Oscar's worthy of his statue. He accomplished so much.
Yes! He is worthy of the statue. He is destined to become a legend, You might as well immortalize him with a statue. :puncher:
Ofcourse Oscar is worthy of this statue. He is the only 6 weight champion in the sport ever . He is a boxing legend and he is the most successful boxer turned promoter
Thou shall not make any images. ;D;D;D
If the statue is about being successful in his career, then Oscar deserves one.
Anyway, I really don't agree about making statues of anyone.
