Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
Forget Ricky Hatton, let him fight fellow loser Oscar De La Hoya, the fight all the real fight fans will want to see next year is Pacquaio vs Mayweather Jr.
I'd say it's as close to a boxing certainty that you can get that Floyd will be coming out of retirement now to take on Manny in a true boxing megafight.
You would have the universally recognised, undisputed best two fighters on the planet fighting each other for all the glory.
When was the last time it happened in the history of boxing that the two unquestioned best p4p fighters have fought each other?
I know Jones and Toney were both near the top of the p4p when they fought but were they hands down 1 and 2 like Floyd and Manny are, I don't think so?
This fight will be mega, I can't wait for this.

Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
Hatton against Manny then the winner gets Floyd.

I would love to see that fight.

Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
sounds promising but if Floyd wins they'll say Pacquiao beat an over the hill Oscar and that him and Floyd weren't in the same weight class. smart marks will never be happy with anything Mayweather does.
Personally I'd like to see Pacquiao fight Hatton, fight of the year till it ends

Why Hatton?
Floyd is a lot smaller than Oscar and hands down the world's best fighter.
Why fight Hatton who got his ass kicked by Floyd?
Let's be real, Manny will make good money against Hatton but at least double against Floyd.
Him and Floyd is a megafight, the Americans need an American fighter involved to truly have it being a plus 1 million ppv fight and besides fightfans want to see the world's very best go at it.
Hatton and Manny is a great fight for sure, but Floyd and Manny completely and utterly eclipses it.

Hatton because Manny can make 140 and it would be nice to see how he can operate. Hatton because at the moment he is the best 140 pounder in the world.
Hatton because Manny could do something shane Mosley didnt, Shane skipped 140 and went to 147 to face oscar and stayed, Manny could move down and beat the guy that just unified two titles down at 140 and add more to his history.
Any fight with Mayweather right now is a name fight, and Manny just had one against the biggest name, I want Pacquiao if he beats Hatton to win the titles at 140 with a win. Does more for boxing and his legacy for a Pacquiao Hatton fight then a Pacquiao Mayweather fight imo.

Your theory is absurd! Fighting Mayweather just a name fight? Since when is an undefeated 5 division champ just a name?
No way in hell beating Hatton at 140 means more than beating Mayweather. PBF KTFO Hatton for crying out loud.

Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
Manny needs another belt. I hope he fights HAtton next. After Hatton he can face MAyweather.
-
Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
I wouldnt mind seeing Hatton/Pac but it's not a fight Ricky will win. And Im a HUGE Hatton fan. But even I cant come up with fantasy scenario that ends with Ricky being competetive more than a couple rounds.
That said, there's plent of competetion for Ricky at 140, lets talk about Pac/Mayweather.
IF, and its a big IF I think, Floyd can be coaxed back into a mega-ppv-p4p fight with Manny, it would be a blockbuster fargon event.
The superior boxing of Mayweather against the nimble whirlwhind that is Pacquiao. Wow. Manny takes an absolute hell of a shot and Ive yet to see him fight scared. Floyd makes folks pay for missing and has the defense of a deflated James Toney. This is a win-win fight for the fans and MUST be made.
My prediction: Manny by SD in an unbelivable entertaining, action packed and VERY close fight.

Yes Mayweather beat Hatton, Hatton went back to 140 and now holds two titles there.
If Pacquiao beats Hatton he also holds two belts at 140 which adds more to his championships. At the moment Mayweather holds no titles and is "retired". If you want Floyd to fight someone at 147 have him fight Williams. If you want Pacquiao to win belts are you going to put him in against Paul Williams at 147 or would you put him in against Hatton at 140?
He can do what Shane Mosley didn't and beat Oscar at 47 and then move down to 140 and win more world titles. I don't see whats so wrong with that notion.
If you want Pacquiao to fight a belt holder at 147 then pick Berto. Because Williams and Margarito should be fighting each other or Mayweather, Cotto is also in the mix up there. And I wouldnt favor Pacquiao against those guys at 147. I think a safer bet would be him vs Hatton at 140, and it would add more world titles to his collection imo.
-
Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
I love Pac for what he just did to Oscar, but I cannot picture him beating PBF. However, if I were PBF, I'd take a tune-up fight first, just to shake the rust off.

Who cares about the belts though? Hatton and Malignaggi fought their big 'unification' title for no belts because they didn't even deem them valuable enough to bother paying the sanctioning fees for.
Joe Calzaghe moved up and fought B Hop for no belt becuase B Hop couldn't care less about keeping it and Joe couldn't care less about winning it.
When it comes to the fighters at the very top they are bigger than all the alphabet belts.
Who cares if Ricky has a paper title, he's still the guy who got ktfo by Floyd Mayweather and therefore the vast majority of people would rather see Manny in with Mayweather rather than a Mayweather victim.
The belts don't matter, look at the super featherweight divison, Manny was seen as THE man in the division, the Ring champ, universally recognised champ in that weight class long before he finally won a belt there. Barrera and Marquez were the belt holders but Manny was the champ.

True.the long break would absolutely effect Floyd.Floyd should fight this March then Hatton vs Pac on May.Then the greatest fight of this generation should happen next December.

Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
I think Floyd's offense wins it for him and not his defense. If you watch his stance it is vulnerable to a straight left.the thing is he has this great right lead that as we all know is the weakness of Pac.Marquez feasted on Pac with his long and wide right bombs. Floyd has this sneaky cobra like overhand and lead rights. So I think being more offensive than being on the defensive end would give him a much much more bigger chance to stop Pac.
-
Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
Why I would like to see him beat Hatton before Floyd, is simply because it would make the Pac v Floyd fight even bigger... There is still the question of whether Pac could beat Hatton... So going into the Floyd fight, people would still consider him a bit of an unknown quantity after Oscar brought nothing to the table...
But a destruction of Hatton would have him at the absolute top of any weight under 147, and the world would pracitically stop for a matchup then with Floyd... I think Floyd would probably like it that way as well, to see Pac beat Hatton first..
Not that I wouldn't love to see him fight Floyd and certainly wouldn't complain about it coming as Pac's next fight.

Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
Wow, I'm still in utter and complete shock on how Manny made Oscar quit. Something only B-Hop has done. I've been a detractor of this fight for months now and I will completely admit that I was wrong. I think Manny has a good shot of beating Hatton but I don't think that he could beat Floyd. I think that Hatton should fight ODLH at Wembley and that Manny should fight Floyd. Even though ODLH really, honestly, did appear to be a completely shot fighter at 147, Manny proved that he can hang with anybody. He DOMINATED and made Oscar quit without even being touched hardly. A Floyd vs Manny fight would be a true superfight and the fight would be competitive and exciting. That's for damn sure.
-
Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
Does anyone really believe Pac could have beaten Oscar in his prime up at Welter? That is the problem with a Mayweather fight.
Too big, too strong but not too old.
Hatton is the perfect fight at the perfect weight and what a tear up it would be (no running as you'd see with Floyd).

No but at the same time could Oscar have beaten prime Chavez ? thats boxing
I hope Hatton fights Pac its a better fight than Pac - Floyd.

Floyd Vs Manny-Its Gotta Happen Now!
Manny Pacquiao has been generally recognised p4p no1 since Floyd Mayweather Jr "officially" retired earlier this year. But I feel that even if Floyd was not retired, the performance Manny displayed last night against the once golden "Golden Boy" would have propelled him to the no1 spot.
My point here is, Floyd has always been rather vain and despite everyone knowing the Oscar that fought him in may 2007 was a different animal to the shadow of a man that turned up last night and was systematically taken apart by the Pacman, he will not be able to rest knowing that people will be saying that there is a man better than him right now who is fighting at his weightclass, and I have no doubt people will be saying that.
So I expect Floyd to announce his comeback shortly to fight Manny, but I really don't see a repeat performance of last night as I think that Floyd has all the tools and counter speed to cause Pacquiao some serious trouble. This is my opinion anyway and I want to hear what you guys on here think should this fight materialise!
-
Re: Floyd Vs Manny-Its Gotta Happen Now!
Yeah, Floyd would not be the cakewalk for Manny that Oscar proved to be. Floyd would not have to cut weight to make 147, he has power there (ask Hatton) & his speed & defense would give Manny many more problems than Oscar did last night. Oscar never had a good right hand but I think Floyd would & could tag Manny with his straight right - the best punch against a lefty anyway.
-
Re: Floyd Vs Manny-Its Gotta Happen Now!
Not to mention the fact that IMO he is the best 147 fighter since SRL!
-
Re: Floyd Vs Manny-Its Gotta Happen Now!
Manny Pacquiao should fight Ricky Hatton and then take on Floyd.....IMO he's got a great chance to beat both guys...I wouldn't call him the favorite vs Mayweather but he has as good a chance as anyone else.

I agree that he has as good a chance as anyone else but after what I watched last night I think he would just have too much for a fight with Hatton to be even competitive. I see Pac KOing Hatton similar fashion to Floyd did but maybe earlier due to his more active style!

hatton first then pbf. then both pac and pbf beat oscar and hatton. no way the pbf match shouldn't happen. if hatton wins, he deserves a rematch with pbf at 140lbs.

yup! while hatton-pac is happening, floyd needs a tune-up to show he still got it. it will only lead up to a bigger lb4lb top guys' clash if manny beats the hitman.

Re: Surely it will be Manny vs Floyd in 2009
Come on guys, we all know belts mean less to pac then the name of his oppenent. He knows the name of his oppenent is better for his legecy then belts. He does want hatton but im sure his starving to fuck floyd up. He has been saying all along he would fight hatton in england and want the crowd against him cause even boos motivated him. I think he will take on hatton but if floyd steps in he would want him even more. Pac wants the best thats his ambition. His been like that way before he was rich, Im a big fan cause pac is still as hungry as the boy who grew up in GENERAL SANTOS PHILIPPINES. Can we say that about anybody else, thats been were pac is now?

Pacman vs Hitman at wembly in june 2009 with 100,000 fans screaming for both fighters to give us a great real scrap!!!
-
Pac vs PBF: make it happen!
It must rot Mayweather that Pac disposed of DLH way more convincingly than he did. Pac stopped Oscar while Floyd never really even hurt him except for one counter right hand.
I think this could be a classic. These two guys are the ATGs of this generation. Pac will go down as a ATG in my eyes, and as big of an a$$hole as Floyd may be, he will be an ATG as well. Make it happen at 140 so there will be no excuses from either side.
I think Pac would tear Ricky up judging by what I saw last night.

if you want to compare the way Oscar fought Manny to the way Mayweather would.
And overall its a bigger fight if Pacquiao beats Hatton first which I think he has a very big chance at doing.
This is the kind of thing that would make Mayweather "unretire"
If you asked PBF to fight Manny now he would probably say the typical "So he beat an old oscar de la hoya, I did that at 154, and Oscar couldn't look impressive against Forbes, he was old, what did that fight prove? I'm the best fighter IN THE WORLD. With the best team IN THE WORLD."
But if Manny beats Hatton especially the way he beat Oscar. Then people will say "Pacquiao beat both Hatton and De La Hoya more impressively then Mayweather did"
That's what can bring the fight up and ultimately make it bigger.

no worries dude i was just being a bit smug that i had predicted that their paths may even cross in the future way back when he was at 126/130

Thats a good prediction, given the events you'd be right.
But I do think Pacquaio should fight Hatton first. They were talking about Henry Armstrong right on the De La Hoya fight, well then he SHOUDL go to 140 and beat Hatton for those titles and they wont call it "cherry picking" like they did against Diaz

If Ricky was as old and way passed his prime like ODLH then I would also say that Pac would tear him up easily. Sure, I can see Pac winning against Ricky. Pac beat The Great Oscar De La Hoya, actually, an old passed his prime OLDH. It happens all the time with fighters who decided to stay in the ring longer than they should. Others beat them and look great.
Pac has looked good in his recent fights. He didn't look as invincible twice against Marquez but other than that, he seems to be going through the right path.
