Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
I think we have the new dream matchup. Pavlik may have a chance against this guy. Although, Rubio holds wins over Rogelio Sanchez Rogelio Sanchez
and
Sherwin Davis Sherwin Davis
just last year! Behold! The mightiest LMW to move up to MW in all history!
Wow.
This could be quite a fight in the making.
How will Pavlik deal with Rubio's style?? I hear this guy uses a lot of tape on his boxing gloves, and he uses his legs to move around the ring. Anyone know anything else about this guy?
Thoughts? Concerns? Does Pavlik still have what it takes?
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
I can't believe it's going to be a PPV. If they thought the Hopkins numbers were disappointing, just wait for these figures to roll in.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Cotto-Jennings
Pavlik-Rubio
My ass should that be PPV for you guys.
At least we get it free in England. WAR JENNINGS!!!
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
This is going to be a PPV split between 2 locations, the othe main event is the Cotto fight.
From my understanding they are going to show 2 of the undercards from the Cotto fight at MSG, then the Cotto fight, and then switch over to the Pavlik fight in Youngstown.
Anyone going to these fights (me to Pavlik since it's 20 minutes away) will be able to see the other main event, because they will show them live on the big screens of each venue.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
PPV is a little too much there only tune up fights anyway except for pavlik because hes makin a defense. im expecting Cotto and Pavlik to win. but fukk PPV though.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Top Rank decided to do an independent PPV, just like they do for Chavez Jr, and all those Latin Fury PPV's.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
ppv ??!!! Hillarious !! Good luck with that. I heard john is fighting dave in section 286 after this event, that's on ppv also.

They're both gimme fights, which is why I would never pay PPV prices for them. I can understand die-hard fans wanting to see their fighter come back from a loss, but putting in on PPV is ridiculous and it's a clear example of the type of policies which are killing boxing and have been for a long time...
You're going to the Pavlik fight? That'll be great, regardless of the opposition. I've still never seen a live fight. I thought about going to see Ishe Smith - Joel Julio in Vancouver, but good tickets were just too expensive to justify. I was definitly going to go see Pac fight in Van. when that was being discussed (I *think* he was supposed to be fighting Valero or maybe Soto, I could be wrong though), I would've payed a significant amount of money for that.

Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
The Chevy Center will be a mad house!!! Rubio better bring an army.
Did we all forget how great Cotto is? He is going to really hurt Jennings. Who in the hell is Jennings and who has he fought. I'm just excited to see Cotto back.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Its times like this, when they start playing the boxing public as fools, that I start wishing for upsets.Rubio is a capable sort but in over his head with Pavs power and his own lack of defence.
Just me but way to many 'showcase' fight shaping up lately ??
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Rubio's not bad, he has genuine power to match Pavlik's and he makes for very exciting fights. I always tune in to Rubio's fights. That being said it's definately not PPV worthy.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Pavlik-Rubio alone is not worth PPV, same can be said for Cotto-Jennings. The fact that its a co-feature is worth it.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
I'm telling you, these PPVs are OUT OF CONTROL!!! Sooner or later even Larry Merchant's ramblings will be on PPV. Why should the viewing public have to pay money to watch two guys who just got their ass whooped? Get the fuck outta here...
On cards like this Arum is just hoping for enough buys (like 150k) to pay for Cotto and Pavlik's guarantees. These guys got career high paychecks for their last fight, they LOST them, and they STILL demand the same paychecks. Pavlik got a $3 Million dollar guarantee for fighting Hopkins, Cotto got a $3 Million dollar guarantee (which I heard went to like 6 Million total after the PPV revenue split) for fighting Tony. Both the guys lost. Cotto's apparently getting a $3 Million guarantee for fighting Jennings and Pavlik probably will get the same amount. These are much lower profile fights and the fighters demand the same amount of money. This is why things are on PPV. Plus, promoters take a good deal of the pot too. The networks don't wanna pay for fights like Rubio and Jennings so Arum has gotta come up with the money somehow. Arum could get the money if Pavlik and Cotto fought harder opponents but he doesn't wanna do that right after two losses. So he has to throw this thing on PPV. The system now is garbage. Everyone is raping the system while they can. But with these shitty HBO rating, boxing better hope that HBO continues to pump the same amount of money into the sport each year, or we're all fucked.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Arum had little choice but to take the card to PPV because neither HBO nor Showtime had an interest in purchasing it. He could have found better opponents, but these are two of the biggest attractions in his stable and both are coming off losses, so he understandably wants to give them confidence building fights. I actually think Rubio-Pavlik could be an entertaining scrap, though I would expect a Pavlik win by mid-rounds stoppage. Cotto should make easy work of Jennings. Whether or not it's a rip-off will depend on the price and the quality of the undercard fights. If it's priced at something like $34.95 and has two interesting undercard bouts, then it could be worth it. If it's your typical $49.95 card Arum will be lucky to get 100,000 buys. Hell, Pavlik-Hopkins only did 190,000.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Rubio is as slow as Christmas morning. I think Pavlik will KO him.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Both those guys just came back from the beating of their lives, They are not worthy of a 54.95 PPV, maybe 19.95 with them on the same card.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
There on PPV not because they want to, but because nobody(HBO or Showtime) would pay to show the fights. Arum either had the choice of not televising them or showing them on a Top Rank produced ppv.

Its only a rip off if you buy it.
I will NOT be buying into it

Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Rubio was in negotiations to fight Andy Lee prior to Lee's shellacking at the hands of Vera.
He's been flirting with the idea of a Pavlik fight for some time.

Yes, I plan on going.
We don't get $hit here in Ohio, so when there is a fight nearby, you bet I'm going to take advantage of it. Youngstown is just a quick drive down the highway for me, so I'm there!
The last time we had a fight here was little over 2 1/2 years ago, and I got lucky on that being my first live fight, because that was the Brewster/Lyakhovich fight. So a great fight broke my live fight cherry. :embarassed:
Of course I wish Pavlik was fighting a bigger name, but I'll take it, and I'm sure the ticket prices should be priced reasonably.
I wouldn't have gone though, if they weren't going to show the Cotto fight on their big screens there. No way would I miss my Miguel fight. :lickish:

If I'm not mistaken, I think Rubio is Pavlik's mandatory.

Have they listed a price ? I thought he was leaning towards David Lopez, think he is # 2?
Something tells me in this shite economy, which will get worse most likely before it gets better, that this is all part of HBO trimming back on shows.May just be the beginning...sadly.
A monthly boxing channel set with a pricetag is sounding better and better. As mentioned......for this one I might understand the 'old school' PPV prices of 19.95 but 50 bucks is just a slap in the face :fight:.I expect a signed T-shirt,a sit down brunch with Pav and a free car wash for that ;D

No, they haven't had any official press conference yet, so I have no clue as to the PPV price, or the ticket prices yet. I'm assuming the details will be coming out soon.
I highly doubt the PPV price will be on the high end, because Arum doesn't have to worry about HBO or Showtime taking a cut. I think his Latin Fury cards were like $29.99 or $34.99.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
I honestly don't think either of the fights are worth watching. If the PPV is more than $25, I'll just chill, go to sleep, and read the articles in the morning.

It's a dumb move by Arum. Both Pavlik and Cotto figure to be in PPV fights over the summer. You'd think he'd want them to fight their tune up fights on regular TV in order to hype up their next fights.

That's f**king hilarious neither network would show them but if they both had won the last fight's this would be an easy 54.95 PPV on HBO. I mean s**t it's not like Kelly PAvlik is the middleweight champion or anything or he's making a second defense of his title's. AAH F**K him he dosen't deserve to be on HBO or Showtime. Maybe Versus could pick this one up.

Is Cotto-Jennings an HBO PPV? Last year HBO made good on their promise of fewer PPVs and I thought that was going to be an ongoing trend with them in the future. You can't just be slapping any old thing up on the wall.

No, this is a Top Rank independent PPV, it has nothing to do with HBO or Showtime. The Cotto fight, and the Pavlik fight are part of the same PPV, they will just be held in 2 different locations, but are part of the same broadcast.
-
Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
There is no way they will make this a 49.95 fight. My best guess is $30, and it's probably worth that. Cotto will likely destroy Jennings, but Pavlik/Rubio could be a very entertaining fight. I would hope they find one more decent fight on the card to round it out.

Well from what I heard, they are going to air two undercard fights, and the Cotto fight from MSG, and then switch over to Youngstown for the Pavilk fight. I heard that Arum wants to try to get Calderon and Juanma for those two other fights.

That would make it much more attractive buy. It would be nice to see Calderon on the card.

Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
I think Cotto is damage goods alot like Vargas after he got squished by Tito and then by Oscar he was finished after those beatings that he took.

Yet to be seen, mi amigo.
That was only his first loss. To look on the bright side, it may have rejuvinated him or schooled him on certain things he did wrong in the fight.

I wouldn't say that they "made good" on their promise. If there is money to be had they will make it! It's all about the Benjamins. They basically got tired of losing money on their gables for sub par fights. I am thinking new thread... WorstPPV fights ever.

Re: Kelly Pavlik PPV in Feb... rip off?
Cotto has always been chinny and it is not glass but it is far away from being great and after a brutal beat down at the end it might of made his punch resistance even worse not to mention he does not have the same look if you know what i mean he is not so super man like anymore and that wont help him either people feared Cotto before Margrito and i am not so sure how feared he would be now after getting defeated like that but who knows Cottos and Margrito might of been like Vargas and Tito not mention the next beat down he got from Oscar which what ever he had left was gone he was young and unbeaten and was the next hot thing then he got stomped. Well i while say this about Cotto he can box and does not just have power to fall back on that is all that Vargas had to fall back on but he did have a better chin also.
