For example I DISLIKE chavez;D ... Why? Because i wasn't born when Chavez was wooping ass, and got into boxing when DLH was comming up and became a huge fan of him. After his fight with Chavez, Chavez was very mad he lost to DLH that he started walking out with DLH opponents, he started talking bad about him. This IMO lead to some mexicans hatting DLH, and some younger guys like me disliking chavez. All and all i can't really hate the guy because he is mexican, and was a great champion but he needs to get over his damn lost to Oscar... i bet it still haunts him at night.

I know a few that hate him because they are huge Oscar fans. Don't get me wrong most love that guy but like i said a few. I would have to disagree with you btw.. That's the first reason why I didn't like him. Also, it made me roll my eyes up every time HBO talked about him or commented during his fights. Making him sound as if he was perfect. So I just wanted to see him loose for those reasons and eventhough I didn't like him back then I felt he got robbed against Tito but still I enjoyed seeing him loose. After that, I was cool about him.

Not sure about this. I thought he did what he had to. It's like, say, a soccer team is winning and there are 5 minutes left and they decide to pass the ball around the field just to make time and walk away with their victory. Sure, they might get some boos but its not like they are doing something illegal. They are just being smart about the situation. ODLH gave Tito a boxing lesson throughout the fight and for the last 2 or 3 rounds decided to just glide his way to victory. Fans didn't like it and seems like the judges saw the fight through casual boxing fans' eyes. Roberto Alcazar told Oscar to do the right thing.

I know. There is some footage out there (I wonder if its on YouTube) of Chavez sparring with ODLH. I think it was just a exhibition thing and ODLH looked like he was punching a rock (Chavez). I have mixed feelings when boxing greats stay in the ring longer then they should only to make young prospects look "great" by loosing to them.

You mean the same sin that mexico's most beloved fighter Chavez made? Btw the doctor, and ref stop the fight. Although i felt Oscar could have prevented that, im sure he wanted the fight to be stop when your beat you are beat. Just ask JJC he did it too. You really have double standards when it comes to Oscar and Chavez... Many great fighters have quit on their stools. Even tough as nail fighters like Duran, Kotysa, Chavez, Morales quit on the canvas with Pac on the 3rd fight... etc.

Well said, I have felt this way for a few years about Oscar, he has done more for Mexicans and Latin Americans in general over any other fighter. A smart business person, a great name in the sport of boxing, and a generous philanthropist (i may have spelled that wrong)

Although this guys paper sucked and I cant believe they are giving away degrees with BS like that, he did make one resounding point that made sensel; Oscar has beat the "Real Mexican fighters" Chavez, Vargas, Paez, Ruelas and that has hurt him in a sense with Mexican, Mex-American, and Latin/Hispanic fans and the reason behind it is because we still are stuck in the dark ages. Hispanic people like other minority groups relate more to someone in their own difficult situation instead of aspiring to or being proud of someone of their own race who has made big accomplishments or has succeeded greatly in life. Not to say that those other boxers were broke or didnt accomplish anything, but not on the level of ODLH and we resent his success. But no other Hispanic/Latin/Mexican fighter has done more for his people then ODLH. We should all thank him for being a great role model for our younger generations (I dont have kids so I wont say for our kids) and for casting a great light on our culture and people.

His parents were Mexican immigrants and because he is first generation and was able to achieve the "American Dream" it makes it very related to the post and to him. Most immigrant parents want that for their kids when they get here. He got beat, but in the end he laughs all the way to the bank.

Concerning the original topic, I went to school with a guy from East L.A. and our freshman year ('96) we were talking about it and he said alot of people in East L.A. don't like Oscar because he's a pretty boy. Keep in mind this was three years before the Trinidad marathon. He also added that JCC was like Jordan there, so it's understandable some of it could be resentment for Oscar beating him, but I think in reality NO fighter who is a pretty boy will have a hardcore fanbase. Oscar and Ray Leonard are the only two fighters in history who's main fanbase consists of mainstream fans. They have no real hardcore fanbase that is significantly big.
