Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
Dan Rafael says that both fighters have agreed to the fight, the money just has to be worked out. Either February 28 or March on HBO. Marquez won't fight in Houston.
I don't see anything else except that boxrec (yes yes I know boxrec is not reliable) has it on for February 28 in Las Vegas.
Anybody hear anything else, this would be top drawer.

Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
Not yet. They just have to get the location and the purse settled and they're good to go.
-
Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
I just read on Boxingtalk that Diaz agreed to fight JMM in March or April, but JMM has not agreed to anything yet, so no agreement or announcement can be formally made yet.
-
Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
on boxingscene they have Willie Savannah, Diaz' manager saying that its pretty much done for February 28 and that Marquez has changed his mind and agreed to fight in Houston, which I guess makes sense in a way because there it will be a big crowd.
Apparently they just have to decide the venue. On HBO.
Rumored undercard is Stephen Luevano-Rocky Juarez, yes another title shot for Rocky Juarez.

Here's an interview with Juan Diaz explaining what the current status is.

Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
And Nate Campbell is left out in the cold fighting Ali Funeka. There is no justice.

Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
Regardless this would be a great fight.

Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
Yea this would be an exceptional matchup, I think I'd take Marquez but not positive Diaz wouldn't outwork him. Would imagine it depends whether Marquez can earn enough respect to make Diaz fight at his pace, going by his performance against Casamayor I suspect he will. Nate Campbell definetly is getting shafted big time though, he deserves a big fight with any of these guys, even a rematch with Diaz for more money. But at least Rocky Juarez is getting another shot:rolleyes: That is really ridiculous if true, I just can't understand for the life of me how he keeps getting on big cards in title fights when he is SHIT to watch. Blah.

I know most people hate Rocky Juarez, but I like him. The problem is that he does do anything exceptional, but he is a fundamentally and technically sound fighter with a great chin. The problem with him is that he's a pressure fighter without great work rate, and he doesn't have much of a killer instinct. He's just steady. He's kinda like a Winky Wright without the great jab and superb defense. He stalks and stalks, and when he's outclassed, like in the Barrera 2 or JMM, he just looks like total garbage. he can't seem to get off and just gets outboxed. He beats they guys that he's supposed to beat. Personally, I really enjoyed the first MAB fight and the Barrios fight. When he's in with a guy who will trade with him, I think he's decent to watch because he's a good counterpuncher and he isn't afraid to trade.
I don't think he gets enough credit. Rocky is step up for Luevano, and I would probably make this fight 60/40 for Juarez. This is a guy who nearly beat Barrera, nearly beat Soto, and stopped Barrios. He's been in with JMM and even won maybe two rounds. Luevano will bring it, and Rocky will have his opportunities to counter with his short and accurate punches. Luevano will find out fast that he's not in with Billy Dib.
He also seems to have a good following, and at this point, he's a well know name. That always helps you get more chances. If Luevano beats him, it will really put him on the map and this will be a great gauge of his talent level.

Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
I think Rocky Juarez and Dana White are trying to bring down boxing.
Ok that's a bit strong maybe but I will never watch him fight again. Seriously, life is too short to sit around and wait for Rocky to throw a punch, having a drinking game based on when Rocky throws a punch would be a shitty drinking game.

I may be exaggerating to make a point

Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
Good match-up but in the end it's all Marquez. Diaz fought well against Katsidis but Marquez is just to damn skilled.
-
Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
JMM will pick Juan Diaz apart.
-
Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
Juan Diaz is one tough cookie.

Press Release
JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ VS. JUAN DIAZ SET FOR FEBRUARY 28TH EDITION OF HBO’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING
LOS ANGELES, December 22 - In 2008, Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez solidified his place among boxing’s elite and became Mexico’s number one fighter by knocking out Joel Casamayor and winning a championship in a third weight class. As 2009 opens, Marquez will not be resting on his laurels, as he accepted the challenge to face former three-time lightweight champion Juan “The Baby Bull” Diaz on Saturday, February 28th in what promises to be an early Fight of The Year candidate.
“This fight between Marquez and Diaz will shake the lightweight division to its core and truly determine the best 135-pounder in the world,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “As a fan, I can’t wait to see this fight.”
Marquez vs. Diaz, a 12 round bout for the Ring Magazine World Lightweight Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and will be televised live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing beginning at 10 pm ET / 7 pm PT.
Mexico’s premier fighter and a future Hall of Famer, Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez (49-4-1, 36 KO’s) has signified excellence for over 15 years and in three weight classes. A world champion at featherweight and junior lightweight, the 35-year-old Mexico City native made an immediate impact at 135 pounds when he won the Ring Magazine World Lightweight Championship by becoming the first man to stop Cuban great Joel Casamayor on September 13, 2008.
“Juan Diaz is a talented young fighter with a bright future,” said Marquez. “But this is still my time and I am not about to let Diaz take my belt away from me.”
Just nine years old when Marquez made his pro debut, 25-year old Juan Diaz (34-1, 17 KO’s) has roared through the pro ranks during his eight-year career and built a stellar reputation as one of the fight game’s most exciting young stars. The Former Three-Time World Lightweight Champion defended his crown seven times, beating the likes of fellow World Champions Acelino Freitas and Julio Diaz along the way. In his last bout in September of 2008, “The Baby Bull” thrilled his hometown fans at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas with a dominant 12 round decision win over Australian warrior Michael Katsidis.
“Juan Manuel is one of the greats in the game and it’s an honor to fight him, but I will be victorious on February 28th,” said Diaz.
A site for Marquez vs. Diaz will be announced shortly. For more information please visit :: Golden Boy Promotions Inc. ::.

You’re absolutely right but I still like to see JMM vs. Juan Diaz, IMO it would be a more entertaining fight according to their styles.

I don’t know why but I see an upset here, maybe ‘cause I’m a Pac fan and Juan is one of my fav. He could outwork JMM despite Dinamita is an excellent counterpuncher.

Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
This is a risky and dangerous fight for JMM. Upset brewing in this one. Baby Bull Diaz will show up and prove he's top notch. It'll be tough but this might signal the tip of the iceburg and the decline of JMM.
-
Re: Is JMM-Juan Diaz officially set?
Yes, I believe it is. This is one tough fight for both JMM and the Baby Bull, and equally taxing. I see it a very close one with Marquez finding a way to win despite, early difficulties. Both fighters will pay dearly with risk to their health to hear the final bell. Marquez, UD or late stoppage.
