Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
I used to have this one, but it is fundamentally flawed because the bag will bounce on the seems, in stead of on a side face. So I popped out the spring pin with a pin punch and took everything off except the inverted U. Then I machined out the holes to make them bigger, I used an angle grinder to modify the inner walls of the anchor shackle because it was slightly too narrow, then I slid along pin through everything, cut off the excess, and voila.
pics to come...

i dont mean to mock you mate, but were you hitting the speedball propperly? To me,if the ball happens to hit the board seam side after you've hit it then your not striking it right and causing the ball to swing all over the place.Unless im wrong and your really experienced and have a knackered speedball instead!!I have a speedball that has the same shackle thats in your photo and its working find apart from when i strike the ball wrong(which happens every now and again)
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
sigh. yes, I know plenty well how to hit a speed bag....really fast, too, for as long as I want.

Well, again, the swivel is fundamentally flawed in its design. And yes, the bag could be a factor. It is a 10x7 everlast that I outgrew a long time ago. That said, I just ordered this 5x8 Rival yesterday.

And here is the "new" swivel, the way they were meant to be.

Nice ball there bud.How much do the shackle cost over where you live? There cost around about £20-£25 over here!
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
Nah, CAN'T be THAT much! Unless you're looking at some kind of special shackle. Because a brand new SWIVEL is only $35 or so, and that's a GOOD one. I paid about $2 for that shackle and $3 for the pin. In retrospect I guess I should have sold the bag and swivel as a set and bought a new swivel with the new bag. oh well... never thought of selling it...

Yep we brits pay a hell of alot of VAT:mad:,still good shackles though!!Mind you you can pick up a full speedball set(including everything, the ball, shackle, swivel, board, brackets)for £70-£80(the cheapest)
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
you guys need to burn down parliament buildings. That's crap. I'm mad for you.
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
Hi Von, did you give it a go? How's the "new" swivel feel?
I've been using a different kind swivel myself, it's similar to this: http://www.boxing-gear.com/acatalog/...INGGEAR-SM.jpg
The fish-eye bolt is connected to a ball which adds a lot more dimension to the speed bag's movement. You could say that it turns that lovable speed ball that you could hit forever and as long as you liked into "Huevo de Diablo." :cooldevil:
Trust me, after you after you install that baby you'll practically have to learn how to hit the speed bag all over again. ;)
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
no not yet. Have to remount the platform.... don't ask why. ;)
I can't imagine using that type of swivel. I would imagine it would be very difficult....
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
You had a beautiful board for your platform if I recall. You ever think about coming out with line up of custom speed bag platforms and marketing them to the boxing elite? 8)
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
no, that's been done, but I do have some boxing product ideas. ;)
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
Everlast are currently charging $1,000 for their top speedball set.

I think that Yvonne is right that the swivel has little to do with what part of the bag contacts the board. On a fully inflated bag it should not matter if the bag hits on the seam between two panels. That happens hundreds of times in a normal workout and should not really influence the rebound negatively.
And Von Milash is correct that this chainlink swivel can influence the rebound of the bag, but I find it happens much more when punching from all sides around the bag. When punching mostly from the front area of the bag, like most boxers do, I don’t think it will influence the rebound arc too much. However, I like his modification. I have modified swivels several times, but have never seen the one he made.
Chris Nagel, here is a video of that particular "Boxing Gear" ballhook swivel “Huevo de Diablo." . That’s a good one..
Re: Doctoring a spped bag swivel.
That is mesmerizing and watching your video made my day. You sir possess great command of the speed bag. 8)

I used to think I was pretty good on a speed bag, past tense
