Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
Boxing News -- 24 hours/day - Reload often!
Glen Johnson uses the festive season to goad Calzaghe, one of many people trying to get the Welshman to decide against retiring, and make a massive fight happen.
Personally, I think Johnson is probably second in line in terms of who I'd actually like Calzaghe to fight if he stays in the game. Personally, I'd like to see Calzaghe - Froch, and I think Froch would get schooled, but with Joe thinking about his legacy, I believe the most likely opponent would be Dawson.
I imagine this kind of festive message will be the first of many, as the fighting season dies down, and the talking season becomes rife.

I'd be happy to see either in the ring with Calzaghe. Honestly though the record shows a Dawson victory over Johnson, so by right he should get a crack at Calzaghe first.

Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
Joe's two biggest fights are Hopkins or Jones in rematches. If he does fight again it'll be one of them, guys like Johnson have no chance at all.

If he rematches Jones he deserves to be pelted with shoes.

If he has a rematch with RJJ I will take any respect whatsoever that I had for Joe and throw it in the bin, because quite frankly ALL the questions about who still had it were answered in that one fight, and no way he should consider that. Hopkins....maybe. Dawson and Johnson. Froch and Kessler maybe. If he comes back, it's a very short list he should be considering.

Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
Good for him.Certainly deserves to be right at the top of the mix imo.Calzaghe vs. Dawson would be my preference but can easily see a Hopkins rematch,Johnson vs. Calzaghe would really be a very busy fight, action packed I think but with Calzaghe looking to call it a day....it really would not benifit him a great deal.

The only thing I can think this one really has going for it is Johnson would make the best matchu-up excitement wise IMO, and Calzaghe might want to go out with a real show for the fans, rather than another grapple-fest with Hopkins, and two lefties are notorious for not providing rip-roaring bouts.

I think you nailed it on the excitment factor...can you picture Joe shaking his hips and mocking A buzzsaw like Johnson ;D.Would make for solid action. And as much as I think Hopkins might be able to change up in a rematch with Joe...Im not yearning to see that again. The least on my want list honestly.Dawson is riding some very good momentum through the year,I can see a nice fight style wise with Joe but Dawson IMO is taking a huge step sideways, rather than forward in career with a pointless rematch against Tarver...for the life of me,that one makes zero sence. Many options out there,no doubt.

Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
I would like to see GJ Vs Joe....I think it would be a good bout...I see JC winning but certainly no walk over...Certainly no easy time like what he had with RJJ....Calzaghe would have a fight on his hands for sure....
Dawson by rights deserves the shot but I actually think GL gives us more for the buck in this one.....
3 years ago I would have really liked to see this one...Glen has slipped a bit since then

Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
johnson can keep wishing but joe not gonna tangle with him

Glen johnson is a good fighter lets not forget that he has power but your right joe would kick butt, i dont think any re-match would be on his hit list, he's beaten them he's nothing left to prove, a match up with dawson would be good he wooped taver that was good enough for me lol (taver was trying to hard to be MASON DIXON, same as tommy morrison tried to play his TOMMY GUNN charector) at the end of the day joe will fight when joe wants to fight, i think he would like to beat the marchiano record of 49-0 but who knows. i would love to see him retire undisputed light heavyweight champ, we all would but the fact is "HE BEAT THE BEST"!!;D thats all he wanted to do.

If you recall, the record is very cloudy. Dawson owes Johnson a rematch. If I were calzaghe, I'd offer to the fight the winner. Calzaghe is always claiming that challenges are what motivates him. It would be a challenge because if the fight came off, it would be two top lhw's fighting just for a chance to fight him. Calzaghe claims boxing is losing steam because he coudn't sell 300,000 ppv's and in this fight he could spend six months promoting it because he could promote it before their fight and after their fight.

My scorecard had Johnson ahead, but it was a close fight, and as I said the official decision went to Dawson. I don't see where waiting would help, because it's possible at this point Calzaghe could retire at any point.

spot on donaire, 114-114 was exactly how i and a lot of observers scored that.
Johnson-Calzaghe would be joes easiest payday since manfredo.
Johnson is a come forward, middle of the ring brawler. JC is 46-0 because he is soooo good against these types of opponents and simply fights these guys at angles and in aggresive consistent flurrys.
The fight wont happen because it just isnt attractive enough to persuade either HBO or Calzaghe, but if it was to it would have 120-108 calzaghe written all over it!!

Gonna call bullshit on this, Johnson is a tough fight for anyone, he won't clam up like Manfredo, his output will put to shame what Hopkins and Jones did, and he's a cagey old man. I still think Calzaghe would win on points, but saying it would be easy is ridiculous.

Agree with the Sheep on this one. No way is Johnson an easy scrap for anyone.

I know what your saying mate and an in your face brawler like GJ would cause problems for anyone.
But in kessler, hopkins, RJJ Joes been up against styles he has rarely faced in his career and each time he had to overcome a new obstacle.
In Johnson i just dont see anything other than a glorified calzaghe-esque previous that he has been through endless times in his career to date and robin reid apart hasnt come across a single problem!!

Fair enough and you are entitled to your belief, but to say it would be as easy as Manfredo suggests you haven't ever seen Johnson fight. Johnson is cagey enough that Calzaghe will have to take time to adapt.

Ive seen Glen Johnson from his hiding by B-hop, to the fights with tarver right up until the dawson fight ( a good 10-15 of his fights)
Dont disregard the man one single bit but just know calzaghe would not struggle with any of the issues most of johnsons crusades have come up against!!

Have to agree on that one.Johnson and easy have never occupied the same arena.Even at this stage,I think Calzaghe would have his hands full.No time for the theatrics and mocking in that one.Johnson would make him fight throughout.

Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
Agreeing with Sheep, both Jones and Hopkins have had Joe down recently, and neither of them are known for their power,I cant see the walk in the park part with Johnson
-
Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
I doubt Joe will face Johnson but if he did he would beat him handily...
Joe was knocked down by Jones and Hopkins but they were really flash knockdowns, especially Hopkins...Joe was never really hurt.
I see Joe beating down Johnson over the course of 12 rounds. I think he would win a wide unanimous decision.
Johnson's style is to walk you down and he is going to have to walk through a ton of bitch slaps and pitipats that come in at light speed.....Joe has some pop in those pitipat/slap punches.....How else was he able to hurt Lacy, Kessler, Jones, and Hopkins (Hopkins wasnt as evident but why do you think he tired and at the end was so cautious, had to call timeout a few times and roll around on the ground etc, he felt the power).....
-
Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
Calzaghe avoided Johnson before. He'll find another way to do it again.

Calzaghe was hurt by Jones, he admitted as much. Jones caught him with a shot (a forearm really) that he never saw coming. He recovered well though.

If Johnson can hurt Dawson, he can easily hurt Calzaghe

Johnson Still pulls the trigger...Jones doesn't....Johnson will eat punches if need be....He has a high defense that woukld make it hard for Joes tap and flurry style to get in with a high % land rate...I agree with Killer...Either you have not really seen Johnsons fights enough or you are not looking at this outside a fan based attitude

Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
Joe wins a by UD. come forwrad guys are his bread and butter, but Johnson is tough enough to cause a lot of problems. I see it as similar to Johnson -Dawson except Joe has the stamina to not take rounds off, so IMO the decision will be wider.
As for avoiding Johnson now, he's just to far down the pecking order. He's lost recently to both Dawson and Woods. Johnson's problem is that he's too one paced (not dimensional), from those two fights it seemed that his opponents only needed to up the pace above what he couldn't keep up with to take rounds, of course without really denting the guy's strong jaw. Calzaghe will be able to keep that pace going for more rounds.

This is a fair assessment. I don't think Johnson OR Dawson can bring the payday Joe's gonna require.

johnson could get his shot.....but he'd probably just loose by close decision anywayz. I'd like to see the fight though.

Re: Glen Johnson's Christmas list.... (calling out Joe Calzaghe)
Sadly for Joe there is really no one in or around his division who would bring him the pay day he deserves right now...Joe desereves a nice big paycheck before retirement...No one will garner enough viewers....

You may know the state of boxing in Britain better than I, but wouldn't any fight in Wales bring Joe a big pay day?

A fight in the UK would bring Joe the biggest paydays no matter what...TBH in the states he is not a overly big draw and the stinkers with
Jones and Hopkins did not do anything to help that....Joe also does not have the loyal fan base that Hatton does where droves of people will fly over to fill the areana....
The type of payday I am talking about is regardless if it is in the UK, USA, or the north pole....Sad fact for him is...Dawson, Johnson, Hopkins, Kessler, or anyone else lingering around the divisions are not big enough draws to really help add to the paydays....
Joe deserves one final mega payday...double million dollar digits I the kind I refer to...He has been at it a long time.....He has certainly proved himself over the last few years especially...

He's the annoying, attention seeking friend who says, ''I might come out with you guys, I'm not sure yet...I'll see how I feel on the day''.
He is just sitting around, waiting to see how many people beg him to come out...fuck him..if guys like Johnson ignore him, then he might do all of us a favour and go away!
I think this limbo stage of JC's career is just for him to see how importantly the fans see him and how important to boxing people percieve he is.
220'000 buys with Roy Jones = You're not that important, get over yourself and retire.
I for one don't think he deserves the big payday due to all the easy money he accumulated fighting bums earlier in his career when guys like Floyd Mayweather, Oscar, Vargas etc were taking on big challenges from around their 18th-20th fights.
Johnson is the one who deserves the payday.
