Whats your favorite boxing style?
So styles make fights, they can make them entertaining, exciting, or boring.
Personally I think there are several catagories,
Boxer-more of a student of the game, uses the jab often, good footwork, great defensively, uses the ring. I'm thinking of Vlad Klitchlo here.
Puncher-pure and simple waiting for a big shot, very limited skills or just relies on his power too much. I'm feeling Mayorga here, pavlik, Miranda, Peter.
Brawler-Likes to get in close and wrestle with opponents. Ricky Hatton
Pressure fighters-Stalking, chasing, running you down. Tony Margarito, Andrade
Slick/Cagey Fighters-In and out quick, great, footwork, Cotto was using this style against Margo and last few rounds against Mosley, also Joel Casamayor was like this a few years ago, Hopkins hits in here as well.
Dirty Fighters-Elbows, low blows. Casamayor, Zab Judah, Ricky Hatton to an extent, Hopkins to an extent.
Tactician - This is save for the true craftsman of the sport, Mayweather, JMM, Baby Bull Diaz (except in his fight against Nate). The ones that see all the angles, know what to throw when.
Then Hybrids
Boxer/Puncher- Great Boxing ability but likes to get into wars at times, I think Manny fits in here pretty well, Barrera, Morales
Boxer/Brawler-Ricky Hatton against Maglinaggi is a good example of this, I also think Hopkins can fight in this way.
Personally I like pressure fighters, they seem more determined, its exciting to see them go after someone with no regard of whats waiting for them. This is gonna sound cheesy but, I see them as a metaphor of how I want to live my life, nonstop, unrelenting, determined, unafraid.
I love to see Margarito fight, smiles at you after you hit him with a big shot, its like he's saying "Oh bitch you think you're tough" Haha. I wanted to start a thread that was all about the phychological damage he caused Cotto after he kept jogging towards him after he would slip away. That has to be depressing to see a guy so eager to take what you're giving him...The Death Jog.
Anyway thats my favorite. If you think I left out a style get it on and list people who you think belong in each style and list your favorite style.
Happy New Year

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
I always liked a good bob and weave style. Not sure which of your categories that fits into. Without going back and actually checking on some of their styles, a few fighters that come to mind are...
Marco Antonio Barrera
Salvador Sanchez
Eusebio Pedroza as exemplified in his fight against Patrick Ford.
Mike Tyson
If anybody thinks any of these guys aren't really bob and weave, let me know.

Tyson fits that catagorie well. I think a real good poster boy for that style would also be Joe Frazier

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?

I like your top three and bottom two choices, except for Vic, I dont like his style at all but I think its improving a touch.
The lighter weighted Mexicans always have me at the first ding; Hunters /gatherers /whatever it takes.

I dont see Vic's style as beautiful to watch but i admire the way he has sussed out his own way to fight and made it work.
I enjoy watching tough Mexican fighters too. The Margo's and Izzy type fighters who need to be run over to stop fighting.
Shit i think i like all styles. Tragic.

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
I like plenty of boxer/punchers (Wlad, Vitali, Joe Louis, Hearns, Roy Jones Jr.) and brawlers (Rocky, Foreman, Hagler, Tyson, Joe Frazier, Tommy Morrison) and I also like a few slick pure boxers (Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker)
I can appreciate most any style but it kind of depends on the attitude of the fighter and the style paired up....like Roberto Duran's style and attidue added up for me whereas Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s style and attitude don't mesh for me.

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
Im currently in love with Mads Larsen
After watching his last fight, its a shame he's getting up there in age, because I could point to that fight, and show it to my boxers and say,"Do you want to know what I want out of you? That right there."He does a couple of things I dont like, but overall, thats the style I teach.

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
Any style works, as long as they are willing to trade to make a fight out of it. Too much of a "defense first" mentality is not attractive to my taste personally.
Augustus' style, I've seen it a few times. It is wacky, but it is totally without merit, I even enjoy it and find myself riled up when he gets a "bummed", more often than not. Can't blame those judges tho', Augustus style is so unconventional, "conventional" scoring methods don't apply. As we all know, judges do not push it and, think out of the box in these below premium matches.

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
Mike McCallum, he had a combination of styles. Guess all around fighter is the word.
-
Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
I consider Augustus to be a cagey veteran kind of like a Freddie Pendleton or Saoul Mamby type, which is my favorite kind of fighter.
-
Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
Boxer Brawler.
Though I do like Punchers also. Punchers with a bit of speed and bit of boxing skill.
-
Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
Overall, boxer-punchers (Holmes, Arguello, Hearns, Pavlik, Tszyu) and counterpunchers (Toney, Tarver, Mayweather when he's against people his own size) with pop are my favorites. Swarmers are fun if they use skill and smart aggression. I enjoy any style done well, but I'm least inclined to enjoy slick boxers who only pot-shot (Mayweather when he's in with a much bigger guy) and don't have killer instinct. I can appreciate them, but it's not my favorite to watch. I'm also not much for pure punchers who plod around waiting for one punch (except for Ding Ling Wilson. For some reason, I like the guy, even though he can be as boring watching paint dry sometimes.)

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
Boxer/Puncher would probably be my favourite & as another example I think this sums up Ali.
I'm also a fan of cagey fighters, pressure fighters & tacticians though. Odd mix I know.
Also to add I think Augustus is brilliant, I like to see someone who has a different attitude in the ring, although this has obviously has cost him fights he has deserved to win.
Also there was a fight of his I saw, can't remember who it was against, but the other guy was obviously having some major problem with his head & was screaming, & Augustus didn't wade in & beat him possibly because he knew he could seriously damage or even kill the other guy. Can't remember much else about the fight (probably very drunk) but that stuck with me & earned my admiration. Would appreciate if someone else knew which fight I'm on about & let me know.

Unreal that one.was Ray Olivera,If Im not mistaken Augustus threw every punch after that corner incident strictly to the body.He would not go to the head and looked to Steve smoger like "Help this dude out".
All of the above with the exception of fleet of foot runners who watch the clock.Technicians and boxers with the occasional brawler.

I believe this one, "unorthodox", is already used to describe lefties or southpaw boxers, while orthodox are the righties, (conforming to). It is a very old labeling that is seldom used nowadays, older posters here can attest to this.

I am very familiar with the name Saoul Mamby, but for the life... can't put the right picture anymore man, aside from physical looks/attributes, (still got that) but fighting style, opponents... and too lazy to googs, right now.
Kindly refresh us with this guy, (if nobody minds be a bit off tangent here)
I know he is somewhat significant for I know the name recognition is for his acclaim and skill.
Age and info-overload through the years, makes way for my brain to perform automatic defrag. Somehow no longer carry fresh images, and to be refreshed will be much appreciated.

Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
Using your categories and definitions, I'd say "Brawler" and "Dirty Fighter" are my least favorite styles of fighter. "Boxer/Puncher" would have to be my favorite.
-
Re: Whats your favorite boxing style?
I don't really have a favorite but i do like watching a good jabber, like Ike Quartey, Larry Holmes. I never get tired of seeing them busting up there opponents with snappy left jabs just a thing of beauty IMO.
