We do ok in Torquay. Hanbury's has won Fish and Chip Shop of the year about 5 times in the last decade. Frank Bruno presented the award once.
Drakes is another local chippy that serves very high nice fish and chips indeed.
15 ywears ago you say? Wasn't that when they stopped wrapping your dinner in newspaper? Maybe you just got addicted to the taste of newsprint and never recovered?
Just kidding. But 15 years or so ago is about when the cod stocks collapsed off the east coast of Canada, I imagine it might be the same elswhere? Is the type of fish an issue?
Bilbo that could be the problem, but I know its not. Everybody feels the same. Mum and Dad had the best Chippy in the North everybody said so. Nowadays they cook in oil not Fat, I think thats the reason. CGM we get ours from the same ocean but further east, I heard the stocks are lower its mostly Cod or Halibut we eat.
Over here it's pretty much all halibut, I'd be surprised if you can buy cod fish and chips above the table anywhere in Canada, and if you could it would be very expensive. :(
CGM, Funny that the price of Cod over here is as expensive as Beef Steak, never use to be ;D
Yeah the oil change could be a cause. I still think the chips in Drakes and Hanbury's in Torquay are good though, although I have to say I rarely eat chips, maybe once a year or so.
I always buy fresh Cod and Haddock myself though every couple weeks. I know from experience if you don't cook it within about ten minutes of buying it it seems to start stinking like a whore's vagina and tasting pretty much as bad.
Maybe modern chippies don't use such fresh fish as in the past?
CGM ;D Thats what I do most waking Hours ;D
The fish and chips in Yorkshire are the finest anywhere - FACT
I was a student in Manchester and never found any decent ones - shite. I work in London regularly and have yet to find a decent one - shite.
I live just quarter of a mile from the place that does the best fish and chips ever - even surpasses Harry Ramsdens (the original restaurant is just 2 miles down the road) . People come for miles to this place - coach trips are regular
Welcome to Murgatroyds
Anyone reading this within a couple of hours drive I suggest you come and give them a try. In fact - sod it, anyone within 8 hours flight should come give them a try ;)
I have battered chips every Friday, tastes beautiful. The fish is crap at the chippy so just get steak and kidney pie. I love my Fridays.
My mum has said the same thing,,, well for over here anyway.. She said another reason (because she worked in a place that did F&C's) was that it's cheaper to run the vats of oil a little bit cooler that the optimal temperature.. Like, a lot cheaper.. So a lot of places don't have their oil quite hot enough, so the chips don't get cooked as good as they did back in the day either with the texture and what not.. probably effects that actual taste as well... Then you can probably go into the quality of the potato's and how they are probably give all sorts of chemicals to grow faster and bigger and are pulled out of the ground early etc..
It's just the way of the future as Howard Hughes says.... Less quality, Less quantity, more Money... It's everyone scurrying around to make an extra dollar at the expense of just about anything else.. Including a great Fish and Chip...
Ours get cooked in oil but they are crap when the oil gets old and nice when its fresh.
I get grilled fish in bread crumbs now.
We get blue grenadier, flake ,orange roughy, flathead.
All good eating but the shark has mercury content that builds up in your system.
I would give my left leg to have a portion of chips with lots of salt and vingegar. Yum Yum. Made some chips the other day, but they were rubbish. Chips always tasted better down the chippy, and if the chippy is going to pot then that is not a good sign at all. Chips are cheap they shouldnt be trying to cut costs on oil if thats what they are doing.
The rotters, off with their heads!! :-\
I've still got to try that one down Frankston way which you said..
There is a good one, or used to be good, in South Melbourne along Clarendon street like way up past the casino heading East... I used to get them every time I was in St Kilda...
Also not sure how often you get down to surf on this side of town, but the best Fish & Chips i've had in probably 10 years were in a Fish & Chip shop in Torquay.. The chips and dim sims and everything had like a slight seafoodie/prawn taste.. Just slight, but was good enough that i've considered taking the 2 hour drive to go there just for their Fish and Chips again.. The beach is of course lovely down there too so you can make a day of it etc..
