Looking for some opinions?
Hi, im a 23 year old girl. I didnt really get into sports until 3 years ago when I took up taekwondo. I was extremly unfit and more than a bit chubby. I have since gained my 1st dan black belt, increased my fitness by huge amounts and lost one and a half stone. I love taekwondo classes however my body has now become used to the training even though it is a tough workout twice a week.
I still weigh around 70kg and want to lose some more weight, maybe abotu 5kg. I do love my food and do not want to go on any very strict diets. Anyway, I have been considering joining a boxing club to help lose the weight and also because i enjoy sparring and training and feel that now I have the experience of taekwondo behind me I may enjoy it. I was just hoping if you guys have any opinions on wether you think boxing woul dhelp lose the weight or wether I need to go on a strict diet to lose the last 5kgs? I don't know much about women in boxing, wether or not their are many women involved in boxing, and maybe it would increase my weight rather than reduce it if it includes lots of weight lifting. I have been cutting down and going jogging with my dog once ro twice per week as well as taekwondo but the scales dont seem to be movign at all. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Looking for some opinions?
You went from new starter to a 1st dan in 3 years??

Re: Looking for some opinions?
if you don't promote people they eventually go away. The mcdojo's know that. A harsh reality of the belt system. But at this point, the benefit of the doubt goes to her.
But jellybean, I truly admire some of those high flying kicks that tkd people do. Requires huge amounts of skill and practice. Can you post a vid of yourself doing them? Would love to see some!

Re: Looking for some opinions?
It is not a mcdojo at all I have worked extremly hard to get where I am today, I guess different clubs have different rules. Thanks for all the advice. I didnt come here to get slagged off for something I have worked so hard for!

Re: Looking for some opinions?
i just said you get the benefit of the doubt. It's a great accomplishment, and one you should be proud of. nobody is slaggin you, it's just that your results are atypical.
my previous wording may have come across the wrong way.

Re: Looking for some opinions?
I'm not slagging you off ..... but I have a black tag in TKD (the one below 1st Dan) and it's taken me 7 years of going twice a week every week to get this far. I'm reasonably athletic and a former good amateur boxer, so I dont think its down to me being particularly bad.
Getting 1st Dan in 3 years either means you are an exceptional student, or they weren't too stringent with the standards .... that's all.
Incidentally, it is very likely that a good boxing gym would help you lose weight - don't forget that boxers have to make weigth so lots of the training is actually about making weight as well as the boxing. Hitting a heavy bag, skipping and all the aerobic work boxers do is better at helping people lose weight than the tkd training I did, which has a different focus.

Re: Looking for some opinions?
You will definitely start to get stronger in the upper body, but I wouldn't join one specifically for losing weight, if you have the self desire to do so as the exercises aren't revolutionary. Basically you need a calorie deficit (500 deficit a day will lose you a pound a week), so if you like your food too much increase your training load. An hour's boxing session is equivalent of a 9km run in energy expenditure terms, which is around 600-700 calories. So find yourself a calorie counter online, take off 500 calories and aim for that while staying active.

I don't know much about the eastern martial arts, but I do know that this is much more aligned with traditional time lines. That's a long time. I've boxed for a while now and wanted to supplement it with some judo, but considering the time and cost, chose to simply become a better boxer. ;D It would be nice to know how long it took Munky to get his black belt in judo. Munk?

Re: Looking for some opinions?
Shoot, thought I'd replied to this earlier.
I would highly reccommend boxing as a method of slimming, toning and defining.
Not strictly because of the exercise, but because of the discipline, motivation and work ethic it inspires in you.

Re: Looking for some opinions?
Well I guess everyone has their own opinions about how long one should train before belts etc. I have trained for three years, four times a week until lately, now its only twice per week which is why im looking for extra training classes. I train with some excellent sports people, some of whom hold eauropean and commonwealth titles so I expect this has helped push me to work harder. I know myself how much I have improved as I can now have a proper match with them (although I still usually lose) and they have to work hard to win whereas a year or two ago i either got my crap knocked in or they had to spar slow lol! Still have a long way to go but at least im improving. When we get higher up the ranks our instructor no longer grades us but masters from the organisation we are with. For my black belt, we actually had a korean master take the grade and then he trained with us after, which was an amazing experience. Im awating my kukkiwon, cert of registration of black belt arriving from korea very soon. Hopefully this will help convince u all its not a mcdojo. Anyway lol, thanks for all the advice to those who answered, think im gonna have a look round a few boxing clubs to see what i think. Meanwhile, have found another tkd club that will let me train with them for extra fitness classes!

Is the association the TAGB or the GTI?

Re: Looking for some opinions?
So she went 4x a week, X went 2x a week, X got his in 7 years, and she got hers (and then some) in 3. Basic algebra says that 2 more times per week should translate to 3.5 years to the same level. But somehow she cut out 6 months and got one degree higher.
X, according to my math, you must suck.

Re: Looking for some opinions?
I'm still waiting to see one of those 360 cresent kicks or whatever they're called. :)

Re: Looking for some opinions?
WTF (I think) do full contact to the body but no contact to the head. They're the guys who wear the armour and it's that style that the Olympics follow.
With that in mind, I would think they do less high kicking as you don't get any points for head contact.
I did ITF, which is, in theory, semi-contact to everywhere. There has been enough blood and teeth in the tournaments I used to compete to make me always go to properly hit my opponent .... but still, that's the rules.
If I did WTF, I would be conditioned to not do high kicks in sparring, though I'm sure they would do it in patterns etc.
Anyway, von, how does she know that you don't just want to check out her butt? Actually, I think this is all a ploy to allow you to check out MY butt. ;)

Re: Looking for some opinions?
I'm sorry guys, I misunderstood "WTF" when I first read it. :D
-
Re: Looking for some opinions?
WTF is style of olympics yes but it is full contact to body and head, 2 points for head shot, 3 if you need a count so we do lots of strecthing and conditioning for head shots. Have no pics sorry. Think I have found a boxing club though :) When to tkd tonite n had a gr8 session, got weighed n lost 1 kilo also so its all good

Re: Looking for some opinions?
Jelly, you should also check out Jenny Craig. Their weight loss program is outstanding. You'll drop 2-3lbs a week on that alone.
No kidding.

Re: Looking for some opinions?
oh thanks il check that out now

Re: Looking for some opinions?
Missed this one.
Just a comment in general. It is possible to get a black belt in 3 years if you train your arse off, are talented and athletic and eat, drink and shit the martial art for that period. McDojo's are places where they give the belt so long as the student pays tuition fee's...i have seen loads of these types of places. If the student is happy then so be it but i hope they dont think for one minute their new black belt status means they can call on their moves when the adrenaline is pumping and they get tunnel vision.
In terms of me, it took years of on and off training to get my shodan. I have always been BJA and to get belts you have to fight, simple as that..no other way around it. You have to demostrate good technique of moves to show you are proficient (theory and practical demonstration) and then you have to fight to get graded up in competitions. So no fella sitting there with a board and pen watching you complete moves on a compliant opponent or any tip tap point scoring stuff..no you have to stand opposite another person of similar grade (who is also fighting to be graded) and fight full on with blood and sweat to get graded up and thats why i love it.
When you get to 1st Kyu (brown) you then go on a points system to get your black, you need a 100 points to get black and points are earned winning fights. BUT it took me a bit longer because i wanted my black via the traditional 'lineup'
Basically 3 other 1st Kyu brown belts lineup and you have to fight and beat each one in turn one after the other with no rest. If you defeat all 3 of them by ippon then you will be awarded your black belt there and then. Remember the guys you are facing are looking to earn points toward their own black belt and are experienced brown belts the same as you. This is the toughest way to earn it but IMO the most respected. I threw up after i got ippon on the 3rd opponent i was exhausted but the feeling is great. When you get through this you truly feel like a proper fighter who could take on anyone. 5 mins rest i felt like going again!! ;D Although think that was just the adrenaline.
With any martial art you only get out what you put in. I do other combatives type stuff too based on WW2 techniques that are very nasty. There is no belt system for this, you just become a nastier and nastier bastard! :)...
Its true what some people say, don't pay attention to belts, belts are for holding up your trousers. Concentrate on your own personal goals and gains and the belts will come.

Re: Looking for some opinions?
Oh and X by the way have you ever heard of the ITA (international taekwondo alliance)?
They are a mcdojo of the highest order. They are now teaching BJJ as part of their syllabus i think (my son used to go their when he was really little..like 4 years old just to get rid of some energy..before i took him off to do Judo at 5 ;D)
I think they go on a 3 week intesive BJJ course or something and add it in to their teaching.

Monkey is back!:D
Have to agree, doing forms is nothing like someone trying to break your skull.
What are these WWII techniques? I want to know.

All it is is a set of combative techniques that were used in WW2. Originally pioneered by Sykes and fairbarn...its good stuff. Real basic techniques that are quick to absorb but offer maximum impact. They are drilled and drilled some more until they become second nature under times of duress or when adrenaline is a major factor in a 'real go' (am talking about street fighting here...or defending yourself on the street from the everyday scum that walk this earth)
